Funny how the fandom loves talking about how Charles didn’t accept Raven’s mutation, but no one notice how she never accepts anything about charles. She spends the whole movie accusing him of everything you can think of, and never accepts his telepathy.

Pretty much. Erik and Raven tote about mutant and proud, yet neither of them can accept Charles’ telepathy.

Raven flips her shit when she thinks Charles has been reading her mind, she insists that he doesn’t and she’s his sister. It’s made abundantly clear that he had a difficult, essentially loveless childhood (his reaction to “Sharon” offering to make him hot chocolate, the physically distant photograph, the dead father…) and the one person who he’s closest to can’t accept the whole of who he is. Few things hurt more than realizing the people you love most cannot accept you whole hog, only select pieces of you. And it’s 100% apparent that Charles (misguided or no) acts out of love and worry for his baby sister whereas Raven acts out of guarded fear, yet she crucifies him for wanting to be “part of [the world]” and claims he’s the one who can’t be accepting.

But no, Charles is the big mean boogeyman for trying to protect his sister the only way he knows how.

#it bothers me so much like she gets so shitty at him for wanting to be part of the world and not against it#But who on this earth wouldn’t want to be part of the world when they’ve had the sum of themself rejected#Who wouldn’t desire to be around other people (especially with a gift like telepathy which is by defintion a more social mutation)#and search for those open-minded ones who wouldn’t shun his telepathy#Raven acts like Charles is naive and doesn’t understand when he understands better than anyone#The man is a telepath he’s seen the breadth of the human condition he understands that there is good and evil in this world#yet chooses to strive for equality and cohabitation#he chooses to believe in the overpowering force of good

I love Raven, but she is definitely a flawed. And yes, the above just about sums it up. I think it makes her an interesting character with room to grow (assuming the movies allow for more character development). But people seem pretty blind to it.

Fandom does like to ignore the fact that being accepting of one type of difference does not automatically make a person accepting of all differences. Actually, it usually doesn't.

Out in the mid-west, in a universe where mutants are recognised members of society but a minority and still suffer a certain amount of abuse and oppression…

Raven and Azazel leave their baby with Charles in the hopes of him having a safer life with his uncle than they can offer him as mutant outlaws. Charles raises the boy and protects him with his wealth and telepathy. When Kurt is thirteen, Charles gets word that Raven has been captured by the notorious bloodthirsty businessman Sebastian Shaw, and immediately rides out to negotiate her release. Too late he discovers it to be a trap with the intent of “recruiting” powerful mutants, but before he is subdued Charles manages to send a pyschic message to Kurt instructing him to find his parents and warn them. The town they were last sighted in is too far for Kurt to teleport, so he sets out on the long journey by horse - and promptly gets lost.

Fortunately, he is found by Erik Lehnsherr - a grumpy gunslinger on the run from the law and looking for his estranged wife and children, also with a score to settle with shaw - who takes Kurt under his wing. In their travels together they encounter Logan, a reluctant sheriff determined to drink his town dry, and the other members of Raven and Azazel’s brotherhood of mutant outlaws, Angel and Janos.

Can Kurt find his parents before they too are captured? Can Charles convince the elusive Miss Frost to turn on Shaw and help the Brotherhood instead? Will Logan ever get a day to himself to drink in peace? And how do Erik Lehnsherr’s long-lost wife and kids fit into this mess?

…You’ll find out if xaviersass and I ever get around to writing this fic.
