As The Dust Settles Around Us...

Set in the fictional town of Roxbury, Montana, Roxbury takes place two weeks after a mass shooting occurred in the local mall. The group will focus on those who were in the mall at the time of the shooting as they struggle to come to terms with what happened. This is a serious and mature bio/oc character development rp group intended for those willing to realistically and respectfully play out the aftermath of the tragedy.

Are you guys still open/active? I hope so. You guys have been getting a lot of hate from what I've seen, but as a survivor of a mass shooting and no way to vent or get the feelings that stick with you out, this roleplay seems like a perfect outlet.

I’m so sorry that you had to go through something like that, and I really hope that you are doing alright! We are still open though, with plenty of members who are active and have no plans of going anywhere. I think it’s just been a busy time for all of us admins, I was barely home at all yesterday! Thank you so much for being so sweet, though we actually haven’t gotten nearly as much hate as it might seem. Some people are very quick to jump on a bandwagon of anything they deem ‘problematic’ without really looking into how careful we and all of our members are being with this plot. Yes, it is a very sensitive plot, but that’s exactly why we have the rules in place that we do. 

Television, movies, books, plays, even fanfiction … all sorts of media deal with tragedies like this, and I don’t see why an RP should be held to completely different standards. As you mention, something like this can even be an outlet for someone who was involved in something similar in real life. We do completely understand that it could also be triggering to some though - which is exactly why there are trigger warnings on every post on the main, every bio, and every ad. We even have an additional trigger warning on our plot, and our members are required to use trigger warnings on their posts that deal with what happened as well. We have done everything possible to prevent anyone from accidentally coming across upsetting material. 

Nothing about this group is intended to glorify a shooting - that is the exact opposite of what us and all of our members are going for. The purpose is to look at how a tragedy like this affects a town and how it changes the lives of those involved. All our members are required to be sure that they are realistically portraying the grief and trauma that come from something like this, and we are fully prepared to act if someone is not respecting that - but so far all our members have been very respectful and accurate. We would love for this group to grow, for there to be more people to join us in telling this story. This is a character development group, the point is for serious and mature muns to explore how such a devastating tragedy changes a character, how it changes people, but that certainly does not mean there is a lack of respect for those who have faced something like this in real life. As a matter of fact, for the admins here and all our members, I think it’s the exact opposite. We all have the utmost respect for the strength of the survivors of real life shootings, and that most certainly includes you, anon.

It’s been two weeks since the shooting at Meadowlark Mall. Roxbury is still in a hush as the town tries to recover from the aftermath of the tragedy. Some of the injured remain in the hospital, while some are already prepared to go home -- as prepared as they can be, anyway, considering what they’ve been through. The city has begun taking measures to increase safety in subtle ways, while political figures are trying to keep this as hush as they can. A shooting is national news, after all, but surely this is an isolated event. That’s the hope, at least, as the town tries to get back into the swing of functioning as they always have.

Note: At this point in time, school should be starting up again for those that aren’t injured, and the Meadowlark Mall is still closed. Survivors, especially those with injuries close in their family or that witnessed deaths, should be seeing counselors as of this week. Those with minor injuries should no longer be in the hospital, while those with major injuries should be working toward release (research your character’s injuries to see how long their stay should be). There is still a lot of press about the shooting and the way the town is recovering, but it is mostly local now rather than national.

THOMAS VERDAY is SEVENTEEN and is a SENIOR who is attending ROXBURY HIGH. He looks just like RICARDO HOYOS and is currently TAKEN.

PAST

Thomas grew up in a pretty average family in the Roxbury. Being the oldest of three siblings, he knew that it was his job to protect his two younger sisters, Maria and Stephanie. As the son of two high school teachers, he was always taught that doing your best in school was one of the best ways to get ahead in life. With his strong connection to Roxbury, Thomas’ plan was always to stay there even for college.

Thomas always found himself adjusting quickly to the things around him. He has always been incredibly smart, and determined. He managed to keep up with his school work, and even got into an AP class at Roxbury High. Even with his sometimes shy personality, Thomas has always found it easy to make friends. Over the years, he has learned to balance school and fun, and has found enjoyment on the Roxbury football team.

PRESENT

During the shooting Thomas was at the mall trying to get a gift for his mom, and get his mind off of a certain girl. He witnessed the first group of people go down before he ducked into a store and hid in a changing room. Thomas continued to hear shots being fired, but was incredibly thankful to get out alive. Now Thomas finds himself ridden with nightmares of that day, and is just trying to get through life as close to normal as possible.

Sydney Eliana Delgado was born and grew up in Santa Ana, California. Her grandmother, Elena, immigrated to the states at the end of the 70’s with her child, Sydney’s mother. She started a café where the menu was based on her own secret family recipes. It was a huge hit! People went nuts for her food. When Sydney’s mother was diagnosed with cancer, they unfortunately had to sell the family business to be able to help her afford treatment. After six months of chemo, she unfortunately passed away. 

Sydney was left with her grandmother, and as she grew older she came curious to how her grandmother had managed to get into the states, and why her grandfather was not a part in her life. Her grandmother told her that she had married a abusive man, whom she left soon after giving birth to Sydney’s mother. On her travels she met a woman whom she fell in love with. It turned out, the lovely neighbor, Cynthia, for the past 16 years had been her grandmothers secret girlfriend, and as soon as Sydney knew the truth about her grandmother and her girlfriend, they moved in together.

Their neighborhood was not the largest in size, and neither was Sydney’s school. Soon after everybody realized what was going on, the already existing teasing of Sydney grew into bullying due to her home situation. Having a gay grandmother was not something a lot of people were used to, and it eventually led to her attempted suicide

After Sydney got out of the hospital, her grandmother told her that they were moving to a new place. A small town in Montana called Roxbury. This was the perfect way for them to start over again, in a town where nobody knew them and their story. It was not many days after they moved in, that Sydney and Cynthia had to run down to the mall to grab a few things for the new house. It was only moments after the shooting began that Cynthia was hit by a bullet to the chest, in a attempt to save Sydney’s life. After everything was over, she was rushed to the hospital where she was rushed into surgery.

Back in England Kathryn was known for being pretty quiet. At least that is how things had been like in the end, when she’d let everything go. She always felt like she was going through the motions rather than living. Kathryn didn’t want to tell anyone, but in reality she felt like she was drowning. After that tragic night, she’d had no friends, no social life, and most days nothing to do. Kathryn wondered how she would even survive, because the fact that she had nobody to talk to really started to get to her after a while. Kathryn wanted more than anything to have a fresh start, and a chance to be happy again. She wanted to forget her past, and move forward. Kathryn wanted the simple things, like friends and to fall in love.

Now in Roxbury Kathryn is determined to turn her life around. When her parents told her she was allowed to go to America, it had been the blessing that she had waited for. She was finally getting the chance to be someone else, and turn things around. Kathryn became obsessed with trying to make friends and be happy. Adjusting to Montana hadn’t been as easy as she hoped, but she refused to give up. It was going to be the place where she found herself, it was going to be the place that saved her. Kathryn was going to make her Senior year of high school matter.

PRESENT

After the shooting, Kathryn found herself beginning to fold into herself again. She didn’t really know how to deal with everything, or who to talk to about her feelings. She’s been working at the mall that day, and had witnessed most of the violence. Kathryn found herself unable to cope with the horrible images, and found herself having a lot of nightmares. She just wanted to make things stop, but was unsure how to do so. Now Kathryn spends most of her time alone at her aunt’s.

PAST

Elijah was raised without a father. He always had his grandfather and his uncles to help, however, and for most of his life that was enough. Sure, there was always a bit of curiosity about who his father was, but his mother would brush it off and let him wonder. She believed it was better for him. Besides, with her being 15 years old when Elijah was born, there were plenty of male authority figures for him to have. Her older brothers took him in like a son of their own. 

PRESENT

It wasn’t until he got older that Elijah decided he needed to know more about his dad. So he brought it up more and more with his mother, getting no information, and finally after about a month of prodding, they started arguing. This turned into more of a fight than either of them anticipated, and Elijah ended up grabbing his jacket and saying he would be home before dark before storming out and deciding he would get dinner at the mall’s food court. Big mistake. Just as he sat down with his Taco Bell, shots went off. He barely had time to look over at the shooter before he felt the pain in his side, and his clothes started to be soaked in blood. The next thing he remembered, he was waking up in a hospital bed, and his mother gave him an envelope with a few details about his father: enough to find him.

EVAN LANGLEY is TWENTY and is a FRESHMAN who is attending ROXBURY UNIVERSITY. He looks just like TYLER BLACKBURN and is currently TAKEN.

“There was a time, I used to look into my father’s eyes. In a happy home, I was a king I had a golden throne. Those days are gone, now the memories are on the wall. I hear the sounds from the places where I was born.”

PAST

With a hardworking mother and troubled father, Evan’s upbringing in Fargo, North Dakota was far from idyllic. Most of the time, when his father wasn’t spending his spare time at the local bars or drinking at home in front of the TV, he was away due to his job as a truck driver. This left Evan’s mother to raise him more or less by herself, as there could be months until she would see her husband again. Alongside having to work two jobs to be able to afford rent and food on the table, Evan spent a lot of his time with his aunt and cousins who lived not too far away from them. Whenever Evan’s father returned home it would only be for a short while, and not long after Evan’s tenth birthday it would be many years until he would see his father again. His mother then had to rely more on her sister to get by. But for Evan, being able to grow up and playing with his cousins, never realized until he came more of age how much work his mother was putting into them being able to have a roof above their heads. This made him want to participate, and as soon as he finished high school he got a job at a local hardware store where he stayed for a year to save up money for College and help his mother with rent.

Acceptance day came, and Evan got a Journalism offer from Roxbury University along with the same offer from NDU. To stay close to home, he accepted his offer to study Journalism at NDU. During his celebration dinner with the family, out of no where his father returned home, highly intoxicated, and started to ramble about how he regretted leaving them and how sorry he was. Then he confessed to having had a affair when he was in Oregon and that Evan had a half brother out there somewhere, a half brother by the name of Aleksi Quirke, whom he according to his father looked similar to. Angry, hurt and slightly confused Evan asked his father to leave, and never return.

After it all had settled a little, over the summer Evan spent hours online looking for this Aleksi, eventually to find a boy fitting his description as being from Oregon and a slight resemblance, only seeing he was now living in the city of Roxbury, Montana. In the heat of the moment, Evan applied for a transfer and told his mother he was going to transfer to Roxbury University and going to find his long lost brother.

PRESENT

Evan was at the mall the day of the shooting. Before the shooting, on his way to the men’s bathroom, he passed a guy who to him seemed odd in a way. There was something about him that made him almost reach out to him to ask if he was okay. Instead, he let it be. Evan is not the most social kind of guy. Minutes after stepping into the bathroom, he began hearing something resembling to gun shots. Freezing  for a second, just listening, he could hear screams mixed up between the high sound of bullets being fired. He was about to open the door to leave, run and try to find a place to hide, when a girl around his age came running in. She grabbed a hold of him, as they ran towards a open bathroom stall. There she locked the door and they remained in each others arms until they were safe to leave. He never saw her again. He was later questioned by the police about the boy he had  ran into minutes before the shooting. It turned out to the be the shooter himself.

Ever since Harmony was young, she has always been treated like a princess. Being from one of the richest families in town, she was always able to get everything she wanted. Her parents were known to spoil her rotten, and many of the other kids used to be very jealous of everything she had. Even with all her families money, her parents had chosen to send her to public school, because they felt that she was more likely to get a less biased education there.

Once high school hit, being beautiful and smart had made Harmony very popular in school. Everyone in the town knew her, and most students wanted to be her friend. Boys were always flirting with her, and she was always coming up with new and creative ways to turn them down. Harmony was always trying her best to be the best that she can be. Ever since she was small she wanted more than anything to leave Montana and to become a famous actress.

PRESENT

After the shooting Harmony has found herself not feeling safe in Roxbury. She tries to spend as much time with friends as she can, because she no longer likes the idea of being alone. Although the girl is still bubbly, she has been deeply affected by what has happened. Part of her still wants more than anything to be an actress, but part of her also wants to stay in Roxbury where she will hopefully not have to deal with more heartbreak.

It does not matter that she was home during the shooting, she was still deeply shocked once she heard about it. Even though Harmony feels like hiding, on the outside she pretends like everything is alright. She can often be found at parties, or around town having fun with her friends. Harmony is always up for having fun, and getting into the occasional trouble. She is unsure what exactly she is going to do when she graduates, but she hopes that it will be something big.

PAST

Clara Oribelle Ammon grew up as the precious only child of Dr. and Dr. Ammon, a college professor and a neurosurgeon. Though her parents had little time they could actually spend with her, she grew up surrounded by all the best nannies and tutors in between her time at expensive and elite schools outside of Roxbury. Determined for Clara to have the best education possible, her parents made sure that school was the only thing Clara ever really had time for. When an IQ test in middle school came back showing her results at a genius level, it only increased her parents drive to ensure Clara reached her full potential. Her talent for science led to her parents scouring the state for the top schools focusing in Clara’s ‘gift’ and it was only Clara’s repeated protests that kept her from being placed into a higher grade.

The older she grew, the more frustrated Clara became with her life. High school was straight AP classes, even her so-called electives focusing on the career path her parents had chosen for her in a subject she was quickly growing to loathe. What time wasn’t spent buried in the homework her school gave was spent with the extra tutors her patents still hired to make sure that Clara had every advantage. She had no time for friends or any kind of social life, and when she finally found a boyfriend in the son of a family friend - her long time best friend, Colin Daniels - she became even more frustrated with her overly-controlling parents and strict schedule they enforced. As much as they liked Colin, they made it clear that they believed she needed to focus on her future, and not on boys. Miserable, lonely, and fed up, Clara began plotting her way out and as much as she hated to do it, she broke up with her boyfriend, not wanting to involve him anymore then she had to. After a few weeks, she had talked a friend she had met online the year before into giving her a place to stay and secreted away enough money to put her plan in motion. In early December of her Junior year, Clara disappeared into thin air.

PRESENT

Her parents rallied the media and Clara’s case was everywhere, but a drastic change in style and a bottle of hair dye kept the young girl hidden in plain sight until she reached her destination. Everything seemed to be going almost perfectly until she gave into her curiosity one day and turned on the news. The story of a shooting in her hometown mall was everywhere and fear gripped her as she began searching though her bag for the phone she had kept turned off since she left. When she finally got to the most recent voicemail from Colin, she swore she felt her heart stop as gun shots and screams erupted in the background before the call cut off. An internet search confirmed her fears, Colin was listed as one of those who had been hurt that day, and while he was thankfully alive, he hadn’t woken up. Within the hour, she had gathered her things and was waiting for a bus with a tear-streaked face, ready to go home.

PAST

Colin grew up in the upper-middle class society of Roxbury, with two loving parents and wonderful grandparents. Unfortunately, when Colin was only six years old, the boy’s mother passed away of cancer. The sudden death wreaked havoc on Colin and his father, and the stress made his dad turn to alcohol. It wasn’t bad at first, but then the anger started. The more alcohol he consumed, the worse the abuse got, until insults and slaps became punches, kicks, belts, and bruises to be covered up. However, despite the pain and the lies, Colin always hoped that his dad would stop drinking… so he hid the bumps and bruises. He became a very good actor throughout the years, able to make up excuses for things like a bruise on his jaw. And people believed him.

All of this had always been alright with him. He always had friends, one in particular: Clara Ammon. The two had always been close, their mothers having been friends, leading them to see quite a bit of each other as children. Like many childhood friends do, as they got older they developed a crush and eventually ended up dating for quiet a while… until she broke up with him, and promptly disappeared from Roxbury. The loss of his best friend hit Colin hard and, while he tried to keep grades up, everything slipped as he attempted to keep up with any updates. He needed to know she was okay.

PRESENT

Colin was on the phone in the food court when the shooting started. He was leaving his nearly-daily message on Clara’s phone, in the middle of a sentence when the shootings started. Instead of ending the call like he usually did, with “I hope to see you soon”, it was a cut off sentence and some banging, with shots heard in the background. When he was shot and fell, Colin’s head hit the floor, causing enough damage to put him into a coma that the doctors weren’t sure if he would wake up from.

Alright, everybody! We’re ready to kickstart our revamp! The only change that has been made to the plot is that we have compressed time since we actually opened - the shooting now took place two weeks ago. All our pages have been updated, and Admin Luke is almost finished with his tweaks to our character bio formatting. Admin Michael and our wonderful Luis are almost finished with the OC character graphics and those will be posted as soon as the last couple graphics are finished! COLIN ANDREWS is THIRTY and is a TEACHER who is teaches at ROXBURY HIGH. He looks just like MATTHEW GRAY GUBLER and is currently OPEN.

PAST

Colin Andrews was raised in a very wealthy family, his parents always on the go. They made time, of course, but the two of them were very career oriented. They needed good publicity with their work, and that meant pressure was put on the eldest Andrews child as soon as he started school. But, fortunately for him, he didn’t disappoint. As he grew, his grades stayed high, and he only ever got good results. Of course, it wasn’t all on him; he had a younger sister, Chloe, who was adopted when he was five. The two of them got along fairly well, for siblings. There was bickering, as siblings do, but all and all the family was regarded as being practically perfect.

Then, when Colin was fourteen, Connor was born. He and Chloe were ecstatic to have another sibling, but it seemed like their parents didn’t share that. The two Andrews siblings took on the role of raising the infant, more parents to him than siblings. Neither of them minded though, especially not Colin, who became more and more protective over Chloe and Connor as he got older. Taking care of a child at such a young age, teaching him the alphabet and other things, must have really rubbed off on the oldest Andrews, because instead of becoming a CEO or picking some other highly regarded profession, Colin decided to teach. It was the most noble in his opinion, and math had always been his strong suit… why not share that? 

Just before Connor was set to start high school, the family received the terrifying news that the boy had cancer - osteosarcoma to be exact - and the two years that followed were nothing short of terrifying as Colin watched the boy he had raised fight for his life. With none of the treatments or surgeries working to get rid of the cancer and fully remove the tumor in Connor’s leg, the decision was made to amputate. Though he knew how difficult it would be for Connor, Colin couldn’t help bet feel relief. With the leg gone, the chances of his brother surviving would increase drastically. 

PRESENT

Colin was in the mall celebrating Connor getting out of the hospital after his surgery when the shootings started. The three siblings had the sense to quickly get on the floor and use a table as a barricade, and the three of them got out unscathed, though the aftermath is something Colin can’t seem to get out of his head. All of the injured, the dead… he couldn’t help but wish there was something more he could have done, but he was just glad that Chloe and Connor weren’t hurt. However, shortly after the shooting he discovered that he had a teenage son, a boy conceived when Colin was only a young teenager himself. The news of Elijah’s existence - and injuries in the shooting - sent Colin’s world even further into a tailspin.

Hey guys, Alie has decided to step down as Admin and leave the RP due to being very busy in real life and while I had some craziness going on myself for a while, I don’t want ot let this go!
