Patton awoke gently to the sun filtering in through the curtains of Emile's living room window. His squeezed his eyes shut tightly before rubbing them and remembering where he was. He had met Emile before. A friend of his father's and he had worked in the castle before. The problem to Patton was that Emile looked exactly as he did back then when Patton was a child. How was that poss- "Good morning, my prince." A voice pulled Patton out of his thoughts as he turned to see Emile standing in the doorframe. He wore a small apron and it was then Patton smell breakfast foods and coffee. "Just Patton is fine, Emile. You... you've known me for a long time." Patton said, clearing his throat. "As you say, Prince Patton." Emile responded, a slight smirk on his face. Patton frowned. "Might I invite you in here for some early morning breakfast?" Patton sighed and stood, stretching his arms up. He glanced at the clock on the wall. 6:37am. He had a few hours to get back to the castle before he was noticed missing. Maybe Emile could help him with that? Patton walked into the kitchen area to see another person sitting at the table. The stranger waved at him with familiarity but Patton didn't recognize him. "Oh right... you probably don't remember much from last night." The man pulled out the center chair and Patton took a seat. "My name is Remy. I work with Emile." "Oh okay. Nice to meet you, Remy." Patton smiled. Remy put his hand to his face quickly, covering his face. "Yeah... pleasure's mine." Patton realized Remy seemed embarrassed, but before Patton could say much, Emile sat a full plate of food in front of him as well as a cup of coffee. "Eat up Prince Patton! You're still a growing boy." Emile insisted, giving Remy a plate as well. Emile sat down with his plate and the three mostly ate in silence. As the three finished, Emile cleared his throat, grabbed Patton's attention. "Patton. I must ask you." He began. "What do you remember from last night?" Patton sat down his cup and began to fiddle with his fork. "Well um... I heard a voice. I snuck out of the castle just to visit the town like I always do but this time I heard something very beautiful. I couldn't... I followed it before I realized I was." Patton stared at the fork in his hand. "It was music. Very soft and I heard singing but I couldn't make out what it was saying." Remy's hand slammed onto the table, causing both Patton and Emile to jump. "S-sorry." Remy said, picking up his dishes. His eyes were dark and his expression blank. Before Patton could ask what was wrong, he felt Emile touch his hand. "Patton, I need you to not go back there, okay? Stay in the castle for awhile." "Aww but Emile you know how much I love the village..." Patton whined a bit. "I also have to... um... I have things I need that I can't get in the castle for... someone." Emile raised his eyebrow but didn't press further. "For your own safety, please stay in the castle." He squeezed Patton's hand. "Please promise me." Patton felt his heart race at the look in Emile's eyes. He swallowed hard and nodded. "Okay..."
// Remember when we said Picani is actually way older than he looks? Well... He worked for the kingdom for a very... very long time. He even got to take care of tiny baby Thomas sometimes!
Emile glanced at the royal son who laid on the couch in his living room. He couldnât believe his eyes when Remy had returned a few short hours after he had left with an unconscious prince of the kingdom.
âYou found him by the window?â Emile asked as he brushed Pattonâs bangs away from his face.
âYeahââ Remy sighed. âIâm not sure what he saw before I managed to get over to him and put him to sleep. Didnât expect Deceit to hypnotize a prince of all people.â He crossed his arms. âDeceit is a bastard through and through.â
Emile nodded in agreement. âYour spell should be wearing off soon yes?â
Remy glanced at a clock on the wall. âYup. Few seconds and sleeping beauty over there will be awake.â
The two fell into silence, the clockâs ticking the only sound. As it rang to 12:31am, Patton rustled a bit, groaning as he brought his hand to his head.
âW-where am I?â Patton mumbled.
âYouâre in my home.â Emile answered, reaching over to pat the boy on the head. âMore importantly, youâre safe. Do you remember anything?â
Patton squeezed the pillow under his head tightly, frowning in thought. âN-no. Well⊠a theater⊠and a strange man.â Patton shook his head. âWait no what was I doingâŠ? Why did I leave the castle?â Patton bit his lip. He could feel tears forming. âWhy canât I remember?â He closed his eyes tightly, feeling the tears fall.
Remy pushed himself off of the wall and walked over to Patton, kneeling down next to him. âHey⊠um⊠itâs okay. You⊠uhâŠâ he rubbed the back of his neck. â⊠you got into something dangerous but I got you out of it and itâs okay now. No worries, alright?â
He reached up to wipe Pattonâs tears away before placing his hand over Pattonâs eyes once more, causing them to droop in sleepiness.
âThank you⊠so muchâŠâ Patton whispered as sleep consumed him again. His hand was tightly holding Remyâs free hand, their fingers interlaced just slightly.
Emile laughed lightly. âFeeling a bit soft today, Remy?â
âShaddup.â Remy spat. âI donât like it when people cry. Upsetting him wonât help us and itâll only make him feel worse.â Remy moved Pattonâs blanket to cover the prince more. Patton snuggled against Remyâs arm. âWe can chat with him tomorrow.â
Emile nodded, standing from his seat and patting Remy on the shoulder. âSounds good.â
Doesnât he have dinner with his family? Certainly big brothers Roman, Logan and Patton would have something to say about that, let alone Gabriel and Mephisto...
Remy sat in the small kitchen area of Emileâs house, contemplating whether or not he wanted to take some food with him. It was going to be a long night.
âArenât you going?â Emileâs voice chimed into his thoughts as the fortune teller walked into the room. He walked nonchalantly up to the counter, pouring himself a cup of coffee. âDeceit isnât gonna wait on you and you still need to find us someone who hasnât been hypnotized yet.â
âI know I know, get off my back will ya?â Remy scoffed, standing up. âIâve gone on this wild goose chase for the past two weeks. Sorry Iâm not super excited to spend all night listening to his bullshit.â
Emile sighed. âYou know Iâd go in your placeââ
ââbut Iâm the only one not affected by his magic. I know. Weâve been over this.â Remy finished. He pulled his goggles off of his head and ran his fingers through his hair before putting them back. âGuess Iâm gonna go. You owe me dinner sometime this week for all of this.â He pulled open the back door of the house, walking out.
Emile smiled, holding his cup to his lips. âOh of course Sir Remington, Iâd never forget.â
âI heard that!! The nameâs Remy. Stop calling me that!!â Remy snapped.
Remy could hear Emileâs laughter as the door slammed shut. The young man rolled his eyes before starting his trek across the castle town to Deceitâs business.
Sneaking through the back alleyways of the small town, Remy pulled his goggles down over his eyes before climbing up a ladder to get an aerial view of Deceitâs theater as lots of townsfolk walked inside. Remy recognized most of them from the previous night which meant Emileâs theory was probably correctâŠ
At that moment, Remy noticed someone new. A young male stood outside one of the windows, a brown cloak on his shoulders hiding most of his clothes. His gaze was locked to the events inside, and his mouth was slightly agape.
âShit, shitâŠâ Remy began to run, jumping over the edges of buildings.
Parkour was never his strong suit but he had to catch this guy. Deceit didnât need any more crazy followers and he hadnât gotten any since Remy started watching.
Remy wasnât one to necessarily flaunt his abilities but his magic was able to prevent Deceitâs control for some reason. Emile wanted to question someone who had seen Deceitâs show but wasnât completely hypnotized. So the two theorized that if Remy could catch someone who had just seen Deceitâs work and put them to sleep then maybe they could learn more how Deceitâs magic worked. Remy pulled the goggles off of his eyes to his forehead, climbing down the side of the last building.
âThis guy could be the answer⊠to stopping this assholeâŠâ Remy whispered to himself. â⊠Iâll stop Deceit from hurting anyone else.â
Remy jumped down behind the man, pulling him away from the window and placing his hand on the strangerâs forehead, a gray fog coming from his fingertips.
âPlease donât become a crazy followerâŠâ Remy pleaded as the stranger fell into a deep sleep in Remyâs arms, going limp.
As he completed his spell, Remy brushed the boyâs hair out of his eyes before looking down at the necklace he was wearing. Remy blinked, taking a better look at him as he grabbed the necklace, seeing the symbol of the royal family carved inside. Looking back at the sleeping boyâs face, Remy realized he was holding one of the princes. Prince Patton to be most specific.
âOh boy⊠Iâm gonna need more caffeine to deal with this.â Remy sighed, picking up Patton gently and walking back towards Emileâs home.
That was a bit of an understatement. With how busy the castle had been as of late, Mephisto felt as if he was running himself ragged. So many things needing his expertise of magic to solve or repair, he was being dragged to all corners of the castle and even into the village. He finally had a moment to himself and something important crossed his mind.
The angel.
Only a few months before, young six year old Virgil had found a fallen âangelâ in the dark forest on the other side of the village. Virgil had been nearly drawn to the strange man while he and Mephisto were out training one afternoon. A loud noise had been heard, a sudden barrage of gunfire and Mephisto had thrown a protective spell over Virgil within a half a second. Once the noise had calmed down, the magician had dropped the barrier and the two had found the angel being beaten by several villagers. Mephisto took control of the situation, taking the angel back to the castle with Virgil. Upon his arrival, the angel was taken from him on the command of King Thomas and Mephisto had not seen him since.
Mephisto arrived in his quarters, shutting the door behind him and discarded his robe on a nearby table. He collapsed on his bed face first into his own pillow. It had been nearly nine days since he had slept in his own bed. He slowly rolled over, resting his arm on his forehead as he stared at the ceiling. Mephisto was exhausted, but his thoughts kept going back to that angel.
Was he really an angel? Could that be possible?
The magician was used to things happening that seemed a bit far-fetched or crazy. He was a magic user which was very unusual. But finding someone, a human with beautiful golden glowing wings, who claimed he was an angel sent from the Gods⊠even Mephisto had to admit he was skeptical. Mephisto sighed, standing up and grabbing his robe, throwing it on as he left his room. He needed answers.

âAwww, poor little baby angel doesnât want to talk huh?â Pause. âAre you a mute? Can you not speak?â
Gabriel stared at the officer in front of him, holding his hands to his chest. The shackles around his arms clanged together as he shook in fear. Why was this person bothering him? Gabriel hadnât done anything. The angel pushed himself against a cold stone wall, wishing he could disappear. The man was so close to him. Gabriel felt his breath on his skin, giving him chills down his spine.
âLearn to speak!â said the officer, slapping Gabriel so hard he fell to the floor.
A cough escaped Gabrielâs throat and it was then, as his head slammed against the concrete floor of the dungeons, that Gabriel realized how sick he was getting. The man in charge of watching his cell had refused to give him any food, which he didnât necessarily need, but the guard had also refused to give him water. As a celestial being, Gabriel grew weaker and weaker without water even faster than a human would. He felt his energy leaving him the more the officer abused him. Gabrielâs eyes fluttered as he tried to stay conscious.
âGET AWAY FROM HIM.â
Suddenly, the guard, whose arms were in midair about to hit Gabriel, completely stopped. Gabriel saw a shadowy figure standing at the entrance of the cell and realized who it was: the royal magician that saved him in the forest. It was Mephisto.
âMagician, how dare you use your spells on an official royal guard of the castle?!â the older officer shouted, frozen in time. He couldnât turn to look at Mephisto but his tone of voice said it all. âIâll turn you into King Thomas himself.â
Mephisto walked up next to him and stared him directly in the eyes, a dark gaze burning deep into the officerâs eyes. âIâm confident King Thomas will take my side. Do you honestly think he will approve of your actions here?â Mephisto taunted, his voice tense. âThat and Iâm nearly 100% confident my relationship with King Thomas will overrule yours.â
The officer spat at Mephisto and the magician dodged it easily, as if he expected it. âYouâre both a bunch of fools. King Pacifist is going to get us all killed; this man is obviously a spy from another countryâŠâ The guard continued to speak but Mephisto had blocked out his voice, turning his attention to the winged man on the floor.
Mephisto whipped back to the guard, knocking him unconscious with a swift side hand to his neck. The manâs body crumpled to the floor. Mephisto bent down to the angel, seeing him staring back at him with dull yellow eyes. Deep shadows had formed under his eyes and his stare seemed nearly dead.
âIâm⊠so sorry.â Mephisto said breathy as he gently helped Gabriel to stand. The angel pulled his wings towards his body, wrapping them around himself as a protective guard. His hand grabbed onto Mephistoâs robes with such a firm grip. The magician looked from the angelâs hand to his face, a gentle smile spreading across. âLet me help you, okay?â
Gabriel felt such a pure vibe coming from Mephisto and he nodded. The angel had seen Mephisto many times while coming to the castle to look over Virgil. Gabriel couldnât explain the emotions he had when he looked at the magician but he felt so safe while he was there.
Mephisto escorted Gabriel through the castle as quickly and quietly as he could. It wasnât that Mephisto thought he would get in trouble for taking Gabriel out of the dungeons, but he knew Gabriel needed medication. It was obvious from his physical appearance that he was malnourished and dehydrated. The last thing the magician wanted was any delays on treating Gabriel which would happen if one of the many guards around the castle saw them. Within twenty or so minutes, the two arrived at Mephistoâs room.
âI know youâre in no position to trust me.â Mephisto started to say as he dug through a nearby bag. He grabbed several different glass vials and some herbs. âBut please, let me help you.â
ââŠmy name is Gabriel.â Gabriel immediately covered his mouth after hearing how gruff and broken his voice was. âI trust you.â The angel stood next to the window, taking in the sunlight. The warmth felt so amazing on his skin and he could feel his strength slowly returning, but there was something wrong.
As he stared out over the village, he suddenly felt extremely light headed and it was, at this moment, Gabriel felt his body finally relax and the tension he had been holding for over a week seeped out, causing him to be overwhelmed with excruciating pain.
Mephisto set up the vials and herbs on his nearby working table and just as he turned around to speak to Gabriel again, all he saw was the angel falling backwards towards the ground. With lightning speed, Mephisto was there, catching Gabriel as the angel fell unconscious.
âGabriel!â Mephisto hissed under his breath. Gabrielâs eyes were squeezed shut in pain and his breathing was very erratic. âGabriel, youâre going to be okay. Youâre going to be okay.â Mephisto picked up the angel gently and carried him over to his bed.
With expert accuracy, Mephisto used his magic along with his medicinal knowledge to create a serum out of herbs, water and several different plants. Mephisto took the concoction and rubbed some of it onto Gabrielâs forehead and cheeks, absorbing into his skin nearly instantaneously. The magician took a thermometer out of his bag and placed it into Gabrielâs mouth. He waited ten seconds before pulling out the device, frowning. It still showed the fever was high, too high. Mephisto used more of the serum and pulled his desk chair next to the bed. Mephisto was a magician not a doctor and he really wasnât sure how to get Gabrielâs fever down except the way you would a child. He stood, slightly embarrassed by his thoughts, but didnât make it far as he felt small, tender fingers grab his own. The magicianâs eyes darted to Gabrielâs unconscious face, distorted with pain and fear.
Mephisto took his robe off quickly and laid down next to the angel, careful to not to harm his wings. Gabriel was suffering from a fever but he was cold. Mephisto knew the best way to warm up was body heat from another body, even if it did feel a bit awkward.
Iâm going insane, I think. Mephisto thought as he stared at Gabrielâs face. Why do I feel drawn to him? I would like to consider myself a rather rational person, but he makes me feelâŠodd. However, itâs definitely not an unpleasant feeling. The magician brushed his left hand onto Gabrielâs forehead, noticing a very large change in his body temperature in a more healthy direction. Mephisto yawned and felt overwhelming exhaustion consume his body, allowing himself to relax and fall asleep.
Call me a fool but I think this person is an true angel and Iâll protect him no matter what.
