One week to go before the St. Barths Bucket Regatta 2022: from 17 to 20 March. The entry list for this year’s edition contains over thirty vessels of which seven unique yachts are delivered by Royal Huisman: Wisp, Elfje, Kamaxitha, Hyperion, Hanuman, Aquarius and a 37m / 123ft undisclosed classic sloop.

Most superyachts from the Royal Huisman fleet are for private use only and are enjoyed ‘to the max’ by their owners, families and friends – who sail them throughout the years on stunning locations all over the world. Only very few of these pedigree yachts are occasionally available for charter and an equally small number come up looking for a new owner.

Yet, chartering is popular among those who may wish to experience sailing aboard a Royal Huisman yacht, simply to enjoy the charter or perhaps as a first step towards owning a superyacht. Others are actively seeking a Royal Huisman pedigree yacht to acquire, and have an interest in a particular yacht.

For example, the 47m / 156ft cutter rigged sloop Hyperion is available for sale and charter. The creatvity of Frers Design and Pieter Beeldsnijder has been translated into a working reality at Royal Huisman (1998). Her build owner Dr. Jim Clark said: “…probably the only shipyard in the world that could have put together such a complex and diverse set of engineering disciplines”

“Retrofitting the current fleet was a major topic at the 14th edition of the annual ‘La Belle Classe Superyachts Business Symposium’ hosted last Wednesday by the Yacht Club de Monaco and Credit Suisse”, explains Boat International. “Hybrid and electric-powered new-builds are helping the industry reduce its environmental impact, but the focus of this symposium was on how the ageing superyacht fleet can be adapted for the future.

With the average yacht now 23 years old, and many coastal regions incorporating new restrictions on diesel-powered vessels, older yachts now need to be refitted in order to be sustainable. Royal Huisman’s Huisfit is leading the way by retrofitting older yachts like Foftein, first delivered in 1999 and Juliet, first delivered in 1993, has had a hybrid engine fitted to reduce her emissions.”

Royal Huisman was an early supporter of the original Nantucket Bucket regatta and has continued to support the Bucket Regattas in Newport and St Barth’s ever since. Out of sight, but not out of mind: Elfje’s furlers do more than just lower the tack fitting. Joint “First in Class” at the St. Barths Bucket Regatta following her 2014 delivery by Royal Huisman.

The owner’s aesthetic was always focused on Beauty. Drawing on the timeless appeal and seaworthy lines of a traditional pilot cutter, the owner wanted a yacht on which you could feel close to the water with minimal deck clutter to break up the sightlines or interfere with hands-on sailing. This meant keeping the freeboards and deckhouses as low as possible, which in turn required pushing the boundaries to optimise the available space below deck.

Conceptually speaking, the NextGEN Ketch Elfje is a project defined by performance in the widest sense. In spite of her classic design references her modern Alustar lightweight aluminium construction was coupled with a highly sophisticated process to integrate systems architecture in order that the owner’s objectives in terms of innovation, sustainability and energy efficiency could be met without compromise.

1884: Jan Huisman founds the yard to build small wooden workboats and fishing boats.

Current article in Superyacht Times about the recently redelivery of Wisp: “in turnkey condition following refit by Royal Huisman's Huisfit team.”

The representative of the Owner, MCM’s Nigel Ingram commented, “Following this refit-project by the Huisfit team, Wisp is again ‘perfect’ and ‘as new’. The full scope of work was executed – in spite of Covid-19 restrictions – as planned and delivered within the agreed budget. In summary, a well-prepared and executed refit so her owner can enjoy being onboard again soon!”

“The owner wanted to breathe new life into the boat, but at the same time leave the original Feadship DNA intact—just make her more current and to have the features that one would expect of a superyacht today.”

The most dramatic changes are inside. […] Broadwater’s designer Adam Voorhees praises Huisfit’s interior project engineer, Ad Diepstraten, calling him “an interiors guru.” Voorhees adds that “he has a craftsman’s eye,” resulting in “a very easy conversation,” especially when the unexpected dictated a design pivot.

CROWNING ACHIEVEMENT - “It’s a big feather in their cap,” says Peter Wilson (MCM Newport) in reference to Royal Huisman. Best known for its sailing superyachts, the yard is actively pursuing power and sail refits, plus new-build motoryachts.
