No Rest for the Wicked || Sungjong && Minseok
The moment he’d taken to pause, a rare break in the non-stop activity of the busy kitchens, was enough to take one look at the prince and know he had not simply wandered into the kitchens by accident. He was only able to mask the pity in his expression just barely, but it slipped through in the solemn way he addressed Minseok, offering him a hand to help him to his feet. “Sir, if I may,” he began, rather formal in tone if only to keep up appearances completely in front of his fellow serving staff, “The kitchens are no place for a prince, and it is much too fair outside for you to break your fast down here.”
If he weren’t so focused on suppressing his irritability at Minseok’s unspoken alienation, he might have chuckled at the endearingly sheepish look on the prince’s face. Instead, it only served to stoke the dissatisfaction deep within him; his prince would go hungry while the rest of them would grow round and fat and happy on turkey legs and pomegranate, enjoying the grandest dining room in the palace while Minseok wandered the bowels of the castle like a mouse. “Perhaps you might enjoy dining on the eastern terrace this morning? The roses are blooming and the sunlight will do well for your health. Or,” he added tentatively, knowing he was being a bit bold for someone of his stature, “If you’d prefer to dine away from the castle,” and away from His Majesty, the father who does not love you like a proper father should, his words subtly suggested, “you might arrange a picnic on the grounds, near the pastures.”
Whether Minseok had noticed the look twisting Sungjong's features, he wouldn't mention it aloud, rather content and familiar in ignoring such looks, perhaps not so much from the other male. Minseok could not ignore the other's expressions so easily of course, not like he could ignore the other staff of the castle, and most of the time he didn't want to-- but in this case he looked over the glimpse of emotions stirring within him. He grasped hold of the younger's hand, using the extra strength offered to lift himself up off the kitchen floors, his other hand moving immediately to subtly pat down his robes to rid him of any sort of dirt; he would not fare well to be considered dirty by any passing guests on top of being the bastard son. The thought brought a grimace to his face but it slipped fluidly from his features as Sungjong spoke, Minseok immediately focussing his attention on him.
"It is particularly lovely out, perhaps you are right; it would do me well to also get out of the way since today is a busy one." The prince hid any hurt, any disappointment residing within him from not being able to break his fast with his sibling, masking his face as he looked around at the bustling quarters. "Ah yes, the roses are due to have bloomed already and I've been meaning to smell them while they are still fragrant." He paces his words, holds them on his tongue to think each through. "A picnic-" He remembers green grass and a young, chubby and squealing Jongdae as they played about near the pastures on a pretty day with lunch tucked away in a basket; his memory is long dated, but it pulls on his heart nonetheless. "It seems like much trouble for just myself though," A pause to taste his words, to meet Sungjong's gaze, "Would you accompany me?"
No Rest for the Wicked || Sungjong && Minseok
It was a day just like any. A day where he would wake at dawn to the distant crowing of a rooster and the shuffling about of his peers in their crowded quarters, no choice but to be alert in the wave of autumn chill that would greet him with the morning. It would be a pleasant day, once the sun rose fully and melted away tentative frost. A perfect day for a hunt in the kingswood, or a stroll through the gardens, where the damask roses would be at the peak of their bloom. It would not be too hot, but perhaps a little breezy, which the horses in their grazing pastures would be happy for. It would be a lovely sight, especially in the late afternoon, when the sun would cast its warmest oranges through the west wing’s windows, just in time for afternoon tea.
He likely wouldn’t see it on this particular day, considering the Duke and Duchess of Morwick would be on their way to the castle even now. Their imminent arrival meant hours of preparation to be done before the King and Queen would even stir in their bed; meals had to be prepped, floors had to be scrubbed until they shone, the most lavish rooms in the palace had to be squeaky clean and decorated lavishly in only the newest and most expensive fashions. His day began with seeing to the princes, a routine that had been a part of his life since he was fourteen.
He dressed with haste and made his way through the kitchens, swiping a slice of pear from a cutting board piled high with ingredients for this morning’s fast-breaking and ducking with a cheeky grin to avoid the inevitable swat the chef would at him on his way out. He made his way upstairs with careful ease, wash basin filled fresh rosewater balanced in his arms, grateful for the slight rise in temperature the climb to higher levels of the castle would bring. Years of making the trip from the servant quarters to Prince Minseok’s chambers so ingrained in his memory that he could likely walk the route in his sleep.
He knocked on the door with a gentle hand and entered the prince’s chambers with a bow, setting the wash basin in its usual place on his night table and moving to the wardrobe. “Good morning, Your Highness.” He carefully tugged an ensemble out of the wardrobe, forest green inlaid with subtle hints of antique gold to match the season, though not too flashy that it might outshine his brother, and laid it out on the bed, smiling politely at Minseok as he approached. He was not oblivious to the prince’s air when he assisted him with dressing in the morning (he insisted for propriety’s sake. He would feel inadequate as a servant if he couldn’t do so much as dress his prince), but he always assumed that if the elder male flinched or stiffened in any way, it was due to the chill of the morning.
As he fastened Minseok’s doublet, deft fingers traveling with practiced expertise down a trail of tiny brass buttons, another servant entered to inform the prince that the Duke and Duchess would be staying in the palace, and that Prince Minseok would not be eating at the main table for breakfast at His Majesty’s request. Sungjong’s jaw tensed as he stepped away from Minseok, gathering his bedclothes and soiled washcloths and actively composing himself, despite the internal dissent he felt boiling in the pit of his stomach. When he turned back to the prince, his demeanor was as calm and composed as always as he draped a modest strand of peridots over his shoulders and reached around to fasten it behind his neck.
“It looks as if the weather will be exceptionally pleasant today,” he uttered quietly, meeting Minseok’s gaze with his own for only a fleeting moment, but hoping he conveyed his sympathy and encouragement; getting out of the stuffiness of the castle would do well to appease such ritual rejection, and maybe he could get enough fresh air for the pair of them, “Perhaps it’s a good day for a ride through the kingswood.” I’m sorry I cannot be of more help than that. He thought to himself as he bowed again, leaving the room and retreating to the kitchens to prepare for the imminent breakfast spread.
Breakfast was well underway when Sungjong saw Minseok for the second time that morning. He nearly sped right past him in his haste to refill the empty bread basket in his hands, and started visibly when he did catch a glimpse of the familiar figure nestled in a corner of the kitchens. “Highness,” he addressed breathlessly, bowing and handing the basket to another passing servant who took over wordlessly, “You’re…Have you eaten? Is there something you need?”
He did not have intentions of anyone taking notice of him, on the floor and hiding away in the corner of the kitchens making himself as small as possible so that no one would look at him with any sort of distaste or pity. Of course, things never did quite go Minseok's way in life and that's how he found himself looking up into familiar eyes. Even before he looked up, Minseok could tell that the breathy voice belonged to Sungjong.
He could only sit and watch as Sungjong passed off whatever he was doing to another kitchen worker. "I..." Minseok looked down at his empty hands and shook his head, he had come to the kitchen to eat but ignored that purpose entirely. He sighed and nodded, looking out to the bustling area filled with servants getting work done and he found he didn't want to intrude anymore. "I wanted to eat but I forgot how busy everyone would be down here, perhaps I should wait for the food to be served in the great hall first." His stomach sounded its dissent at waiting longer for food, loud to Minseok and his cheeks coloured with his embarrassment.
No Rest for the Wicked || Sungjong && Minseok
When Minseok had awoken that morning he felt off. It was possible that it was a combination of uneasy rest he had in the past week and the seasons changing, always feeling quite off when they change. He barely had time to crack open his tired eyes, glued together from sleep, when there was a gentle rap of knuckles on his door and Sungjong was coming in for morning preparation. It was always Sungjong that came for help in the morning without fail, the male servant carrying in a small tub of hot water and cloths for Minseok to wash with. They worked together efficiently; Minseok would go to wash his face first and then clean up while Sungjong would arrange his daily outfit, always choosing appropriately considering weather and his activities. Sungjong was a crucial piece to Minseok's life.
Minseok had to shake off his weariness in order to stand up straight for Sungjong to start dressing him; no matter how many times Minseok would insist that he was perfectly capable of clothing himself, Sungjong would continue on as if not hearing him. It was a struggle not to watch the other as he pulled fabric onto him piece by piece, the male was quite a distraction and Minseok had nothing else to look at in the room during. His cheeks reddend some without fail as Sungjong pulled the trousers up his legs, although he hid the colouring by turning his head completely. He knew they were both men but there was something about the position that just sparked an awkwardness in the young male that he couldn't control. Sungjong had pulled away to bring back Minseok's doublet, he stretched his arms out to fit through the sleeves. He watched the male as he moved around him, his long deft fingers doing up the jacket, they looked warm; he looked warm.
It was a habit, falling into thoughts like those-- Minseok was wholeheartedly guilty of the consuming images and ideas in his head. It took more than a shake of the head to rid them from the forefront of his mind but it was all he could do at the moment, he would have to be down in the serving room for the family's fast breaking-- something he was reluctantly invited to each morning unless nobility was a guest in the castle. He'd eat with the King, Queen, and his brother Jongdae but as soon as someone were to eat with them Minseok would be pushed aside for it was unheard of for someone like him to eat with the royal family. It would not have been so hard if he were 'allowed' to eat with the servants but because his father was king, not even that luxary was given to him; Minseok would eat alone.
Today was one of those days he was told when a servant came to him with word of a visitor in the castle. Minseok really should have learned not to be bothered by this but it was troubling when he could not even share food with his brother when the sun rose, could not make sure the other was doing well or if he slept peacefully-- he would be outcasted and ignored for however many hours the visitor chose to stay.
It was with heavy feet and eyes that Minseok made his way to the kitchens, of course no one really batted an eye at the bastard prince coming for his meal himself, this did happen frequently. He ignored any looks directed towards his way and slipped down to a corner unoccupied by kitchen traffic, silent and tight lipped; he'd eat alone once more.
