The Wedding of Princess Irene and Prince Carlos of Bourbon-Parma ↳ In 1964, Princess Irene of the Netherlands, second daughter of Queen Juliana, caused a constitutional crisis in the Netherlands when she became engaged to the heir of one of the pretenders to the Spanish throne and converted from Protestantism to Roman Catholicism. Queen Juliana attempted to stop the marriage. No one from the Dutch Royal family or any Dutch diplomatic representative attended the wedding of the couple in the Borghese Chapel at the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome, Italy, on 29 April 1964. There were also no representatives of Spain’s Franco government at the ceremony; the couple chose Rome as the site of their nuptials because of its neutrality.
