Arakawa's big, juicy brain when she wrote roy and riza meeting each other again in the military and what that both meant for them emotionally and psychologically like i just know after berthold's funeral, these two thought that for sure they were never going to cross paths ever again and if they ever did, it would be because of some random, super mundane occurrence. Not a literal war bringing them back to each other's lives. And to top it all off, riza being reunited with roy only to see him wield the flame alchemy in such an abominable and heinous manner?

I could write a whole dissertation about how sad and complicated this relationship is and how despite this vague longing to be with each other, they know they're so corrupt in ways that i just know for sure they have questioned their feelings for one another like as to whether or not it's actually genuine affection or something convoluted like attachment based on guilt and remorse, a form of perpetual self-inflicted punishment that they put on themselves because in a story about equivalent exchange, i believe roy and riza saw their love as the greatest sacrifice to be made to atone for their sins.
