It was enough for Hudson to get emotional just by seeing a picture of Connor. I’m convinced that he was sobbing during a later FaceTime call which almost certainly made Connor start crying too. The first several minutes of the call were likely nothing but barely understandable "I'm so proud of you"s and "I love you"s as they struggled to compose themselves.

Listen I’m genuinely not trying to shade their rl because I don’t even dislike her/them together, BUT—I do think it’s telling that h doesn’t like PDA when it comes to his romantic relationship, but simultaneously expresses his platonic love for his best friend extremely physically, to the point he has to call out double standards around male affection and everyone and their mother thinks he’s in love with his bestie. If I were him, I would do some introspection. But hey, it’s always easier to see clearing through the trees when you’re already stood in the clearing. He’s young and will figure it out one day. This is coming from someone who realized they were queer years after having a very homoerotic best friendship that in retrospect was not platonic at all…

I don’t think he needs to figure anything out at all in terms of his homoerotic friendship. He knows. It’s my belief they cruised past friendship and dove right into lovers long, long ago. What he needs to figure out it what to do about it amidst a situation where everyone agreed to keep it a secret and there are high stakes for his career, Connor’s career, pressure from their respective teams, perhaps conflicting visions on how to handle it, and the remnants of a prior relationship that if fully exposed would be embarrassing in and of itself.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.

Hesitation

Hudson, brother, would it kill you to look at people and speak with confidence when you talk about K? It’s always the “uh” and the pause before giving her name and title. First in the VF GRWM, then in the Vogue GRWM, and now at the CSAs.

Girlfriend to Partner

"My partner, Katelyn" I will never get over how weird it is as a breakout actor to have your girlfriend/partner at every event. How much more obvious can this be?! I digress. The shift from girlfriend to partner threw me off quite a bit, but I find it interesting too. Partner can be seen as more mature/serious, but also comes across as less personal and not necessarily romantic either. After all, you can have many types of partners in your life. I'm curious to see how this plays out in the future. For all we know, Hudson could have chosen this to make their relationship sound serious in preparation for Season 2 shenanigans and beyond!

As a side comment - in my experience partner is most commonly used amongst LGBTQ+ couples, although it is becoming more common for everyone.

Wherever You Are

Ironically, the time Hudson spent on Connor's part of his speech was 5 seconds longer (how poetic given their first zoom meeting) compared to K's. I think it would have been a good 2 seconds longer still, if he was able to find K in the audience. I guess it's easier to find people (e.g. Jacob, Rachel, and Brendan) when you actually look at them though...

Love You

"Bye mom, love you!" "Bye bestie, love you!" "Love you too, girl!"

"Love you" is very casual, and often used as a throw away statement. This is not to say people who say it don't mean it. However, there's a stark difference between "Love you!" and "[Bye Huddy] I love you." or "I fell in love with [Connor] as a person." One is inherently more romantic and deeper than the other, and isn’t Hudson’s choice curious for tonight?

Finger Hearts

Fingers hearts are very Gen Z (I would know), however, they're not very Gen Z for your partner. They're a friend thing!! The finger hearts did make me laugh because guys… you're supposed to be in a romantic relationship!! "Uh... my partner, Katelyn, wherever you are, there you are, love you!" is not exactly exuding long-term romance... but it is giving two young Gen Z friends trying their best to play the part.

Stable

Answer featuring an anon! I was wrestling with how to say this and Anon came through for me in this twilight hour.

Using the word stable can imply a continuation of a previous state. It's steady, not supportive, doesn't allow for much change, it’s not giving “with me through thick and thin” etc., just keeps him where he is when he feels all-over-the-place or chaotic. Not always a bad thing, but certainly a far cry from an emotional support person in life.

Special Callout: Malicious Compliance

When Hudson's name was announced, K put her hands on his shoulder, watching him as he stood. It seemed like K almost expected him to acknowledge her in some way (kiss on the cheek, hug etc.). Instead, Hudson hesitated like he thought about it, then decided against it, and smiled at Jacob as he turned around. In my opinion, this was a perfect example of real-time malicious compliance. Hudson knew what would be normal for a couple and what he could do to make himself and K look even more real, but he also knew he didn't need to. So, he didn't. If that doesn't sum this night up, I don't know what does!

nearly 5 months of filming... considering what HC said about filming season 1, that the two of them having separate accommodations but basically being in each other's the whole time, plus the fact that they stay at each other's places when in the other's city...if getting a place together was only a thought before, season 2 might actually make it a reality. Like, the long film schedule may be to accommodate for other obligations the two will have between, but I do think a lot of it will be for exclusively filing season 2. So H and C basically living together for half a year which may make them realize that yeah, actually, they do want to have a homebase that they can come back to for just the two of them...like getting a place together is no longer a heehee haha wouldn't that be fun but instead an actual want and need they find they have.

regarding Hudson’s relationship and the seemingly lack of passion and intimacy, I sometimes think about hudson saying that his fave intimate scene in heated rivalry was the kiss in episode 4 montage, with him and connor kissing passionately and not being able to stay off each other while going up the stairs before cracking. He said both him and connor have never done that before in their lives, and were surprised to hear the staff saying it’s normal. I remember hudson saying that when it’s time to “go”, he just folds his clothes and that’s it. No offense but given that he’s young and has been in a relationship since his early 20s, that’s kinda sad especially knowing that he seems very passionate, freaky and h*rny when he wants to be (see him thirsting over connor). I think that tells a lot about his relationship and explains the lack of chemistry. Same as of why connor is single and luckily away from his psycho ex

you know how the staircase kiss wasn’t the direction Jacob intended but it was so sweet Jacob didn’t care? I'm actually so deadly sure that if it weren't for hudcon it would be a completely different show and I don't think it would be as pop-culture-breaking as it is. genuinely not even me hudconning too close to the sun it's just magical watching them together. look let's be so real. the book is a lighthearted romance about an underexplored topic in mainstream culture and it's a good read but it's not a coincidence it's only the show that's winning awards. most of the dialogue is lifted right from the book and do you know what! it's bad! like it is cringe how many times Shane says 'fuck you' and the hole and the peg line IS tooth-achingly awful and hollanov barely have ten lines of actual real dialogue but it doesn't even matter because everything that makes you feral about the show is the unspoken stuff. you can feel Shane shaking with desire when he sees Ilya in the showers. when Ilya puts his thumb in Shane's mouth in the first hookup it's so wild and desperate you know how long Shane has been waiting and wanting to suck a dick. the way Shane launches himself on Ilya, the seamless lift-n-carry, the god damn WOMB KISS, the crotch-crawl-nuzzle in Vegas, the body kisses, the hand under the shirt in tunameltdown. every. single. second of the frottage calm before the storm. the cottage ILY, 'please fuck me', all the fingers and hands and thumbs and faces pressed so close together. you FEEL. IT. if you had a pair of actors who were not so willing to get all up in each other's faces (and chests and nipples and crotches) the show would just be like episode 3 the whole way through. which is to say: fine. a lot of people would still like it, but it would be fine. not like whatever we got which singlehandedly idk rearranged my brain at an atomic level or something.

Ok well I hate to be the "I know a person" person, BUT, I do have a little story from the after party in regards to Hudson and Connor. I live in Brooklyn and my roommate's sister works under Condé Nast which is the same media company as GQ and she was at the Met after party with a bunch of her team. My roommate and I grilled her about hudcon and she said that she personally only got to see them once before she left and here's how she described it. Evidently Connor was speaking with someone, and several minutes later Hudson walked over to them. She said Connor never once disengaged from his conversation with the man but he noticed Hudson approaching them and he just put his arm out for Hudson, and Hudson went right into Connor's side with his own arm around Connor's waist🥲 I guess from there on the two of them just stood with their arm around each other talking with this other person. It was hard to press a ton of details out of her because she's not a super fan so she wasn't necessarily watching them intently but this is what she noticed. To me it almost sounded like an unspoken ~we must be touching at all times~ kinda thing. She said I could tell other HR fans but I don't really want d0xx my account so I figured sending an anon is the best option!

Hmmm… in terms of malicious compliance, I’m still deciding what I think. It’s essentially a way to explain the gap (really, a valley) between the Best Friends Forever narrative we’re being spoon fed, and the romantic undertones we constantly see in hudcon’s interactions. While it’s true that yeah, they could just be friends that flirt with each other, it’s reaching a point where it’s too blatant. Are they really that bad at following the PR script? Or…

They don’t want to. Which is much more logical than PR’s spin of two capable adults “accidentally” touching each other too provocatively, sitting on each other’s laps, nearly kissing in front of other people, using romantic language, and moving through every major event like a coupled pair (complete with mysterious disappearances). The walk of shame…… guys the implications…

It’s so suspicious that many of us (rightfully) wonder if they are actually that sloppy and young and free, or, in actuality very aware of where the firm lines on their behavior are, and taking care not to cross them. Like they’re actually dialed in on keeping themselves in check, while having as much fun as possible up to that point. We can almost imagine Hudson saying, “Sure, I won’t do that in public,” while doing almost the exact thing he was told not to do.

Things like Hudson posting that sexual sink photo, of his “best friend” in a private bathroom - as a media article cited it as a “small moment between friends.”

I touched on this a bit in the Queer post, but I’ve believed for a while that Hudcon flaunt and claim each other intentionally. You’ll find almost nothing to really nail them, but they’re well aware of the implied messages they’re sending - and the small print that allows them to make their management teams sweat.

Just a fun idea, for the whimsy…

Regarding the social media wipeouts…

The less time Hudson spends on these apps, the better. I do buy the theory that his time on Threads was a Meta deal, although it does feel Early for him to empty the account. At least he left its shell in place? (Hmm, like what I just said about him reading the fine print..)

I actually think him hiding the info on insta is smart. There were too many people tracking his every move, and I’m certain he felt like he couldn’t breathe without them noticing. Anything that gives him some healthy space is a good thing in my book.

A lot of people complain about how much we miss Connor having a presence… but I get it! Completely! He’s protecting his peace, and I’ve long felt that Hudson needed to follow that example. I would love to see him post every now and then, of course, but right now he needs to unplug and refocus so apart from my initial shock, I think it’s the right decision.

Besides… you didn’t hear this from me, but there’s snakes in the grass… He needs to limit his activity for a bit and smoke them out. 🐍
