We now carry Palomino Blackwing Pearl pencils, AKA my new favorite pencil. The lead is dark, soft, and smooth but somehow keeps a point for a ridiculously long time (perhaps through some sort of black magic) so they’re great for impatient folks like me that want crisp, dark lines without having to stop to sharpen a pencil every five seconds.

I'm a micron-rapidograph-super-tiny-details-kind-of-a-guy so when I do use a pencil, it is usually .3mm mechanical pencil, but I'm really excited to see where things go now that I've found the Blackwing Pearl.

And they’re just so dang pretty! Black (replaceable) eraser, silver ferrule, cedar wood, be still my beating heart. If this pencil had good health insurance, I would marry it.

It's spring it's spring it's spring!

With that in mind we've ordered some pocket sized Koi watercolor sets for field sketching. That bad boy on the left has been with me for five years and come along camping, to bonfires, bars, house shows, and the back seat of long road trips and I would recommend the heck out of it. The brush that comes with it has a water well in the handle and collapses to fit inside the box (if you loose it we have long-handled replacements like the one I have on the left).

Incredible White Mask

One of my firsts picks when we started doing a pick-of-the-week was Liquid Frisket (aka liquid magic) because it is wonderful. If you mention this post I will give you a discount because I love it and I want you to try it.

Liquid Frisket is a more precise alternative to using masking tape, rubber cement, or clear wax crayons as a resist.  It gives you a crisp hard edge and won't rip or alter the surface in any way or leave behind a gunky residue.  Bonus points, peeling it off is really satisfying. 

I like Incredible White Mask because it goes on white but dries nearly perfectly clear, and won't stain your paper (some liquid frisket can leave behind a yellow stain) and because it dries very quickly which is great if you're as impatient as I am. 

The same brand sells a tool called The Incredible Nib that you can use to apply the frisket because it will gunk up and ruin brushes, but I've found that you can use a variety of things from your junk drawer.  Toothpicks, old toothbrushes, bamboo kebab skewers, and carved erasers still on the end of a pencil make great and fairly precise tools, but the best thing about liquid frisket is that that it really lends itself to experimentation, so get creative!
