Final Presentation

Our class had a Final Presentation where groups were asked to present what they have obtained and tested during their fieldwork in Marikina River. Our group analyzed our water samples and measured the pH, Electrical Conductivity, Total Dissolved Solids, and Copper content. An SVAP analysis was also made regarding the Marikina River on site, and it obtained an average score of 3.2. This means that the river has a poor type of water body, which is kind of apparent just by looking (and smelling) the river. With that, I hope that necessary actions must be taken seriously by the government and its people, including us, regarding the worsening state of our river systems here in the Philippines. Quantifying the problems is one thing, but being able to be a part of the solution is another. This class has certainly sparked something in me that I’ll forever take with me for the rest of my life, as an engineer in the future and as a decent human being (charot). I would also like to have this opportunity to thank my groupmates for being so active and responsible. I would have never passed this subject (claiming it haha) without their tireless persistence in doing all the activities. Thank you so much.

Marikina River Fieldwork

Our group decided to visit the infamous Marikina River on a hot and sunny day, just because we want to. Loljk. As part of the requirement, students in this class are expected to gather water samples and obtain important parameters. I was really excited for this activity because it would be my first time going to a polluted river and appreciate how a fieldwork regarding water quality is conducted. It is also the right time to test our skills and knowledge that we have acquired for the whole semester. As expected from out group, we delivered haha. We obtained water samples and tested some of the critical water quality parameters on site and in the laboratory.

Philippine Map using ArcGIS

Learning how to read maps is a basic skill that every person should learn. But if you’re an engineer, it is important that you also know how to make comprehensive maps that will help you in your projects and studies. To understand the necessary concepts and contents of a map, our class were taught how to create maps using ArcGIS. This software is used for the creation and use of maps, compilation of geographic data, analysis of mapped information, and so much more I honestly forgot loljk. To test if we really learned something, each group was tasked to make a Philippine Provincial Map, as you can see below. I think our group did well :)

Agno River Infographic

It is imperative that every student in this class are informed of the necessary data about some of the important and largest rivers in the Philippines like Agno River. To make sure that these data are much easier to grasp for simple students like me, an infographic is needed to make the presentation more organized. Other rivers were also presented by other groups. To make the activity more productive and fun, nitty gritty comments and questions were also made by our professors. In the end, everyone survived and learned a lot from the infographics.

Amazing Race

It’s time for the much awaited Amazing Race of the class! In this race, the groups must be successful in completing tasks to tasks so they can be proclaimed as winners and win a prize. Different environmental engineering and chemistry concepts were included in the tasks so you can imagine how hard it is for stupid people like me loljk. Our group was off to a good start during the race, but we tumbled down when we encountered a really hard task that deals with separating different kinds of fluids. After so much effort, we prospered and fortunately made it until the end. What I found funny about this race was the Group 1 were crowned as first place, Group 2 as second place, and so on. Nevertheless, all of the groups had fun, and brought home necessary concepts and skills that will make them as better human beings in their lives.

To finally practice what we learned from reading the necessary reading assignments about the monitoring of water quality, the group decided to act and conduct an activity in UP Lagoon. My group did a Stream Visual Assessment Protocol (SVAP) Analysis to essentially assess the stream of our beloved UP Lagoon. After the activity and calculations, the downstream part of the UP Lagoon obtained an average score of 5.36, which basically means that it has a fair type of water body. Surprise Group Quiz

Our first group activity was an announced “surprise group quiz” about the regulations that monitor our precious water bodies such as DAO 2016-08, Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water, and Philippine National Standards for Drinking Water. These laws and regulations are established and implemented so that various problems concerning our water supply would be properly addressed. Anyway, the group quiz had a quiz bee format that will have teams of five battling each other for the crown. Since the prize of the competition is said to be a Yellow Cab pizza from our dear professors, we named our group Team Yellow Cab. At first, I was confident that my group has it in the bag since my groupmates were really smart and knowledgeable on the water quality topics. However, the other groups prevail, and we end up losing. But it’s okay, we enjoyed the activity and learned a lot from it, just without the pizza huhu.
