Rtx essentials, y'all! (I hear people are already getting sick so I am chugging these emergen-C packets as a precaution!)
Is it okay to get my badge signed by a talent even though it's a Friday?
I'm sorry, I'm not really clear on what you're asking? You are definitely allowed to have talent sign your badge, given than it doesn't completely obscure the fact that it's a badge for RTX. Is that what you were asking about?
Going on hiatus starting Thursday, August 6, 8pm CST.
I have a lot of things to do for RTX, so starting tomorrow night, I will NOT be answering any more questions on this blog. Itâs simply too time consuming considering Iâll be running around the entire weekend.
However, if you happen to have a last minute question about RTX, you are more than welcome to try and message me on Kik. My Kik username is phantomgaga, so if you have a quick question or concern then go ahead and try me on there. I canât guarantee that youâll get an immediate answer but I'll do my best to be checking my phone regularly for all of you that might need help.
I hope everyone is excited and prepared for this weekend!
Hi! I just saw the post where someone asked how to make sure a gift for an RT staff member gets to them! You can definitely give the gift to a Guardian and we'll make sure it ends up in the right place! And I believe there is a drop off location in each venue.
This is great to know, so heads up for anyone whoâs planning on dropping off presents for cast/crew!Â
(I assume this post is from a Guardian, but if anyone not on anon wants to confirm this, that would be much appreciated.)
Hi! First off, thank you so much for everything you're doing. You are SUCH a great help. Secondly, will we be able to text your number like last year if we have any questions? I know I'll have a few come con-time. (Where to get booze, hair dye, best sushi in town, etc)
Oh my gosh of course!!
I wonât give you my actual phone number, but if you have Kik (a handy messaging app that most smartphones have), my username is phantomgaga.
Iâll make a separate post about this, but basically this is going to be for any last-minute questions or concerns right before RTX starts, or during RTX since I canât be checking tumblr constantly starting in the next couple of days.
Iâm so glad you remembered ^^! Thanks!
You're the best. Thank you so much for creating this blog. I've been on panic mode since last Friday and just going through your blog today calmed me down. So, again, thank you.
You're so welcome, anon. Getting messages like these is the reason I'm doing this. I want to help everyone out and make sure it's as stress-free as possible. :) You'll have an amazing time at RTX, trust me.
Be careful wearing wigs at RTX!
This is a bit of an afterthought, yes, but after trying on my cosplay today in the Texas heat, I think itâs important to let everyone know that wearing wigs is serious business. (I was only in my wig for about 5 minutes when I noticed that, boy, I was getting WARM).
To put it simply, lots of body heat escapes from your head. Wearing a wig cap + a wig on your head basically traps ALL of that heat in your head and body. This can be extremely bad if you are not properly hydrated or in an air conditioned place.
If you can help it, donât be in your wig for MORE than a few hours at a time. Take breaks if you can. If you start feeling faint, or if you were sweating and your body has stopped sweating all together, that is BAD. You need to find water and let your body rest.
This advice goes for all RTX-goers, but especially if youâre a cosplayer wearing a LOT of heavy clothing or even if itâs just wearing a wig, please be careful and stay safe!
First Aid Travel Kit
Always be prepared: thatâs what they always say! And when it comes to health and safety, I let my inner girl scout kick in!
I always travel light but I donât compromise on a well-stocked first aid kit! Aside from the convenience of having the right meds anytime anywhere, I donât wanna risk wasting precious vacation time going to a drugstore, asking about the medicines they have and then worrying if the medicine theyâre giving me will have a negative reaction on my body or not.
Since I just reorganized our kit, let me share with you how I assembled ours and some tips you can use in case you wanna assemble your own!
CONTENTS:
Iâm sure our first aid travel kit will look slightly different from yours because aside from the usual (medicines for headache, diarrhea, etc.) you have to bring medicines for whatever preexisting conditions you have.
But to give you an idea, hereâs a general list of what I included in ours:
Medicines
Diarrhea: include oral rehydration salts
Fever/Headache: Paracetamol
Cough
Colds
Allergies
Reflux
Indigestion
Motion sickness: chewables in case no access to water
Joint pain: in case of accidents
Vitamins
Ointments & Creams
Wounds: include Povidone-Iodine solution (a.k.a. Betadine)
Bruises
Body aches
ToolsÂ
Band-aids: different sizes
Thermometer
Gauze tape
Rubber gloves (multi-purpose; as hot/cold compress bags)
ORGANIZATION:
Mor and I used to just dump all the medicine on a clear plastic pouch BUT I got so annoyed whenever I had to look for something that I decided to redo everything! Proper organization is very important: it saves time and lessens stress!
Here are tips based on how I made ours:
Sort by category
I arranged ours by illness. No need to dig through the whole kit! Just grab the bag you need.
Separate in clear, resealable, plastic bags
You HAVE to separate especially the creams to avoid contamination in case they leak or spill! Clear bags help so that you can see the contents immediately.
Label clearly: use a bold, easy to read font
Illness / category
Names of the medicines inside
Dosage of each medicine
Other important info: Such as if you canât take the meds on an empty stomach, or if you canât take it for more than a certain number of days, etc.
I designed my own labels, printed it on board paper and stuck clear tape across them to make them waterproof. Another option is using a sticker label maker (but I wanted to put the little graphics, which is I why I made my own, hehe!)
Assembling a first aid travel kit and putting them all together in one handy pouch is a good idea. You can store it in your cabinet so that itâs ready anytime. You can just throw it in your luggage whenever youâre packing and you donât have to think about what to pack each time.
Other tips:
Donât overpack: Bring just enough to last you a day or two until you find a convenient time to buy more at a drugstore (if needed). And donât pack for everyone on your trip; just pack for one.
Check expiry: very important! You donât wanna bring expired meds you canât use on your trip!
Use a clear pouch so that you can easily see the contents. Make sure your pouch is also waterproof / plastic just in case some of your meds spill or leak, at least it wonât ruin your other things.
My kit is far from perfect and Iâm always open to suggestions and ideas! Am I missing anything? Share with me your own tips and ideas by leaving a comment below!
to follow up that question, is it safe to plan to go to CAH after the On the Spot panel? (5-6 OtS and CAH at 7)
I canât guarantee that youâll be admitted into any panel or event, to be perfectly honest. I do know that the room capacity for CAH is quite large; around 1300 people, so that means you have a much better chance of getting in than last year.
However, getting in line 1 hour earlier does not guarantee you anything. It just means youâll have a fairly good chance of getting in (in my opinion, anyway). It is a pretty safe bet considering both events occur in the same room (Lonestar Ballroom at the JW Marriott)! But that doesn't mean you can just camp in the Ballroom for an hour. The guardians have to remove everyone from the room no matter what. Safety and cleanliness and all.
how do the after hour events (such as CAH) work? like getting in line and whatnot?
They pretty much work just like any other panel. Not much different, really, except itâs at night!
I'm so excited for rtx, but I am going alone and awful at making friends. Any suggestions?
Of course Iâve got a few I think will really help you out!
First and foremost:Â
TALK TO âSTRANGERSâ
I know growing up we always heard things like âDonât talk to strangersâ, but at RTX you canât ever look at anyone as being a total stranger because they arenât! We are a community all gathered together by one reason and that is Rooster Teeth. We all share common interests, ideas, and goals in having fun for three days all crammed together.Â
At RTX you can very well turn to the person in line next to you and say âHey, have you seen the new Play Pals?â or âHey, did you like that new Million Dollars, But⊠?â YOU CAN START A CONVERSATION WHICH LEADS TO NUMBER TWO.
Second on the list:
DONâT FEAR STARTING A CONVERSATION
You do realize this a convention made for nerds by nerds, right? Say whatâs on your mind and donât be afraid of the outcome. Chances are there are five people in a hearing radius that have heard and one is sure to comment. If not, as I said, donât be afraid to turn to the person next to you and just ask a question in regards to anything Rooster Teeth related. (Or Grumps if thatâs the panel youâre lined up for). You literally CANNOT go wrong with starting a conversation that has to do with the convention youâre at.
The whole âdonât fearâ stems from being shy in what reaction you will get and trust me: they will vary, but that is okay. Each person will give a different reaction, but that always lines up for a different conversation and eye opener to what interests this person about Rooster Teeth. Never be afraid to speak your mind about your interests at this convention. Seriously: Donât. Itâll be worth it in the end.
Next up:
PLEASE KEEP SMILING
I know sometimes that can be hard and I know it can be even harder when youâre hot and miserable. (Iâve lived in Texas for over a year. I know this feeling). BUT PLEASE DO NOT FORGET TO SMILE. Smiling is always a positive way to have people interact with you. Others are more excited to approach someone with smile rather than what I suffer with âresting bitch faceâ. If you feel yourself slipping from that grin: quickly put it back on by reminding yourself where you are!
You should always have a reason to smile while at this convention and if you donât Iâm going to be worried.
Another thing to remember:
REMEMBER YOU ARENâT THE ONLY ONE ALONE
There are thousands of people going to RTX this year and I can promise you that not all of them are flying in with good buddies. Itâs an expensive trip and sometimes you canât bring Bob with you, but thatâs alright because new Bobs are waiting for you on the convention floor. These people are looking to find and make friends too so donât feel like youâre the only one. Approach everyone with a smile and that friend mind set already in place because for all you know: Theyâre alone too and they are also âawfulâ at making friends.
WHICH NOTE HERE: NO ONE IS AWFUL AT MAKING FRIENDS. Not here. Not at RTX. You will always walk out of this weekend with a handful of new friends.
Finally because Iâm running out of time:
BE YOURSELF
You are your own prime way of getting friends and by being the person you love is what will help that. If you walk through those convention doors and put into your head âiâm going to be so and so this weekendâ you wonât get far. Just remember that the friends you have now like you for you. There are thousands of people here and they will relate, like, cherish, and remember you once this weekend is over. BUT only if you promise to be yourself. There is nothing better than becoming friends with someone one year and remembering what you can to bring that information back the next.Â
I made several friends last year and Iâve been counting down the days that I get to see them again. I became friends with them because of what they brought to RTX. Themselves. So please donât be afraid to be yourself. Itâs the best way to have fun and make friends.
Last one, I lied about the last one being final:
HAVE FUN
BECAUSE IF YOU ARENâT HAVING FUN THEN YOU ARENâT MAKING THE MOST OF IT.Â
Youâll be fine, dear. Iâm sure of it. â„
I just wanted to add for people staying hydrated that you should really start drinking an appropriate amount of water a day or two before the convention starts because it usually takes a day for your body to get over dehydration
This is an excellent point, anon. So on Wednesday or Thursday of this coming week, attendees should be really mindful of their water intake and drink at least 6 glasses of water during the day. You will love yourself so much more for doing that, trust me!!(I'll make sure this gets added to the RTX checklist post when I get home - I'm on mobile right now)
for an outfit i'm wearing, some parts have like spikes though not pointy spikes more like cones with a rounded tip. though it'll be on my shoulder/neck do you think they will tell me to pull it off?
Probably not. The only thing that is not allowed when it comes to cosplaying at RTX is if you specifically have a weapon or prop that can cause harm to someone. Or, if it's just a regular outfit ("street clothing") that you had in mind, then that would be even less of an issue, I'd imagine.
so i really want to make a thing for an rt cast member though i'm not going to their signing. how do i get it to the right guardian to make sure the person receives it?
I really canât promise you anything if you donât have an autograph ticket, unfortunately.
Your best bet would be to ask a guardian managing an autograph line if it would be possible to just âdrop offâ a present or gift for the talent. In my opinion that seems like an appropriate thing to ask, because youâre not necessarily taking away time from those who are waiting in line with a ticket. I hate sounding like a broken record, but please be respectful if a guardian tells you that they canât do it for you.
If you get lucky and manage to drop off a gift without any issues, remember to include a note with something like your twitter handle or RT user name - I know the crew will take the time to message you and thank you if they really like what you got them.
Edit- another possibility would be to give it to someone who you know has a ticket for a signing, and then they can pass it off to the cast member, if they are cool with doing that for you!
for signings could i hand my phone to a guardian and ask them to take a picture for me if i don't want to do a selfie? also do you think it be possible if i got a seflie and then a faraway picture? thanks and awesome blog it's been helping tons!
For questions about multiple pictures/videos, I can't really give a straight answer. It will depend on how stringent the autograph / meet and greet rules will be this year. I'm sure if you ask a guardian, they will be more than happy to take a picture of you and the talent. I personally prefer that; I've never really been a fan of taking selfies when I meet someone I really look up to for some reason. Just remember, if they tell you only a certain number of pictures are allowed then please be respectful of that.
hi so i've managed to get autograph tickets but I'm getting a lot of anxiety about it. there are 3 friends i want to get autographs for and also a video, but I'm not sure if that's appropriate? is it too much for them to do; should i narrow down the list?
Well, it really depends on what your goals are for this meet and greet.
If you just want someone to sign 3 things and do a quick video, I donât think thatâs terribly demanding. If you want them to do 3 separate videos, plus several autographs for your friends, plus photos and autographs for yourself... thatâs edging the line of being inappropriate in terms of taking up too much time.Â
While I havenât actually waited in the autograph lines, anything thatâs taking over 3-5 minutes can cause a guardian to ask you to leave. Itâs simply not fair to the other people who have been waiting and you end up cutting into their time with the cast/crew.Â
All I can tell you is to make sure you walk into the meet and greet as prepared as possible. Have a reasonably set number of things you want to get signed that wonât take up too much time, and then use the last half of your time to do photos and one video. Thatâs not the rules, per se, but itâs something I would strongly suggest to stay respectful to the talent and to the fans waiting in line behind you. Hope this helps!
With the new signing limitations, is it okay to ask for an autograph outside of a signing? I really want to meet Kathleen but I can't make it to her signing! :(
Of course! I mentioned this in an earlier ask, but if you were to run into someone on the RTX floor, then it wouldnât be inappropriate to politely ask someone for an autograph.Â
I will reiterate, though, if a cast or crew member is in a hurry, if theyâre obviously busy or on their way to somewhere else, do NOT bother them beyond just a quick âhiâ. They need to get to their panels and sessions, so please be respectful of their obligations for work.
