Okay i know you probably werenât expecting a very rambly headcanon for an answer, but i am a giant nerd for Zoro so here I go. This needs a bit of explaining so bear with me as I nerd all over this post.
In history, ear piercing was common for seafarers, not just pirates. It was believed to keep away bad spirits, prevent drowning and the gold used for the earring itself could pay for a sailors fee home if he died at sea so he could be buried on home soil. It was a code among seafarers actually, take the earring, get the guy home.
piercings were also given to sailors to commemorate big events, such as crossing the equator or reaching a certain hard-to-survive destination (haha).
BUT after the ânew world richesâ dried up, the pirates moved their plundering to Asia in the early to mid-eighteenth century. There was a new myth that spawned among sailors after they were taught about Acupuncture by locals. That piercing oneâs ear could improve eyesight via ear-eye connection.
âThere are reports of people enjoying vision improvements after having their ears pierced. In fact, when I studied acupuncture, the subject of pirates piercing their ears just for this reason was discussed.â
- Dr Steve Given, acupuncturist, teaches at Emperorâs College in Santa Monica, California
Now Iâm not saying this is an actual fact or anything. I donât know shit about acupuncture, but this man does, and if you want to read what I read to FIND this quote, here is a link.
so to have three earrings maybe Zoro just REALLY wants to be protected from demons? or heâs REALLY worried about being buried at his home island? Or maybe he just thinks itâs hot as fuck (truth) or likes to have wind chimes in his ear all the time to remind him of home or something.
OR, to get back to my headcanon, tl:dr core of the matter, that no one would understand the logic behind if I didnât explain my reasoning:
Zoro needs glasses really bad.
