Prior to the events of San Sebastián, Barry Williams was already fighting wars before the Blight struck. He enlisted in the Army in 1810, and then saw combat in 1811 during the Blockade of Almeida. By 1811, he held the rank of Lieutenant.
During the battle, Barry led his company of men with the aid of Major Thomas Pilkington, as they noticed that the French were leaving the fort despite a huge presence of British and Portuguese Forces surrounding the area, and that their division is under the command of an incompetent, or insane General. The Escape was nearly foiled as dozens of Frenchmen were shot at by the British. General Antoine Brenier ordered the garrison to run for it and retreat as the situation became intense due to the presence of the 9th Regiment of Foot. Amongst the 9th was Alex Miles, a Sergeant. After all French Troops escaped the fortified city, explosives went off blocking the entrance of the fort which caused many British troops to be injured, or perhaps dead from the falling debris.
In reality, the escape was a success for General Brenier, but in my version of the events which is entirely fictional, the escape was successful, but suffered hundreds of casualties.
