But, it kills me inside to think that the competition is almost a month away and I’m still stuck. I meant to work on the game since February, but finding and making time between school and extracurricular activities (as well as motivation) has been nearly impossible. Now I have ACTs and AP tests to study for, as well as other classes too, and I keep getting more busy. I shouldn’t be working alone, but I don’t know anyone who is willing or skilled enough to work on my team. I passed up multiple other great opportunities to do this competition, and I’m going to do it. It just depends on how much I can get done before May 11th.
These past couple months I have spent thinking a lot about the game. It will be very simple. I always over-complicate things, and I definitely can’t afford to at this point. No combat, if you are seen by an enemy, you're dead. Stealth and strategy are the way to win, which is how I like to play my games anyway.
I have started a to-do list with small, achievable goals that will hopefully help me stay motivated. I’m not usually a procrastinator, so this “crunch” is kind of unusual for me to deal with. Up until this year I’ve never had a lack of motivation. I’m learning how to work with it while also stressing to get stuff done, which is not ideal.
I want to continue to use tumblr as a way to record my process, but be aware updates may come slow as I try to focus on making the game itself.
Finalize character designs
Finalize 1st level design
Finish coding guard sequences
Ask teacher about cutscenes
Start 1st level w/ placeholder art
Start player char sprites
It doesn’t seem like a lot of progress, but we will see how it goes. I think once I get in the groove I will be able to work faster and focus better. I procrastinated on a big sewing project for months, and early March I went to work on it a bit and ended up getting 8 hours straight into the project without even stopping to eat.
I’m going to go work on coding a bit and some more detailed character design now, I might upload process on those later but I’m just glad I was able to write this post. I needed to get some of this out of my brain and into words. Is this why bloggers blog? Am I becoming a blogger?? Oof. Well. More on that later. Time to get to work.
