I changed it up today and worked a bit on the theme music!

I don’t know if I will get a chance to compose songs for the whole game, but I would really like to have an original theme for the title menu, trailer, etc.

I am new at composing and any sort of synth music, so please bear in mind that this might not be top notch! I used Musescore3 to create it, and I’m not a huge fan of the last bit. Any suggestions are welcome! There will be much more added but I got this melody in my head and had to get it down somewhere.

Update - 1/30/19

It’s been a while. Sorry about that.

Work on the game has slowed down. The new semester started Monday, and I have been trying to finish up some other big projects. Overall, I plan on getting back to the grindstone soon. I want to finish the mechanics for enemy AI and interactions, and then I plan on getting a script written, some level design drafted out, and sprite animations started.

Today I focused on the telekinesis ability for the player. I found some helpful code online to get me started with a drag/drop situation, mostly since I haven’t used mouse input before now. I made a few changes and added some parameters of my own to fit my needs. I have been testing the script with the boxes (seen in the last post’s video) and I got one to work really well. Unfortunately, my sprites weren’t cropped correctly so there was a bunch of transparent space that was getting affected too. I edited the sprites themselves but Unity didn’t like replacing them, so instead I created a new sprite and manually copied everything over from my old boxes onto the new one.

Update on the mechanics of invisibility and "special sight" for the player. Art is not finalized, level is designed for testing purposes only.

Invisibility is turned on by pressing "Z" and runs out when the bar in the top left is empty. It slowly regenerates when not active. This was particularly tricky to code and took me a couple hours, but I am happy with the result. I am sure I will clean up the process as I go along.

The "special sight" is toggled at any time with "X" and has no timer. This is to help the player see which objects can be interacted with, eventually for the telekinesis, among other secrets I have yet to decide on.

Update - 1/22/2019

Today I am working on the mechanics for Scare City. The player will be able to turn invisible, use telekinesis, and use a dash mechanism to climb buildings and explore the world. I would love to focus on getting my player mechanics worked out today. Next on my list of game mechanics is enemy AI, character interaction, and special view that I have to keep brainstorming on. The idea of this “special view” is that the player will be able to toggle it and see things they can interact with (especially telekinesis) throughout the game, as well as other hidden secrets.

I’m going to get to work, but I have high hopes for this game and I am excited to share more about it with you!

Hello Tumblr!

Chloe here. I am the head designer, programmer, writer, composer, um... Yeah I’m the only one here. I am a high school student in Oregon who is currently working on making and submitting her first game to the Oregon Game Project Challenge!

I thought it might be a good idea to have a place to keep track of my progress, so I will be using this blog to post about the development of Scare City (the current placeholder title for my 2D platformer for the challenge) and hopefully get some feedback along the way.

This is my second video game I have ever made. The first being one I just developed in a week for my video games class I am taking, but that was just so I could learn the ropes. Now I am moving on to the big game.

Enjoy watching me learn how to tackle creating a video game from scratch. Lucky for me, I have all of the skills needed in various areas to make the sound, write the story, animate the sprites, and program the actual game. Unlucky for me, I am doing all of those things. We will see how it goes.
