Sitting at one of the tables, the young man began telling stories to the younger kids, but it seemed to get repetitive as the afternoon continued to drag on. So with a new idea, he began to sing. “Why are there so many songs about rainbows and what’s on the other side? Rainbows are visions, but only illusions, and rainbows have nothing to hide. So we’ve been told and some choose to believe it. I know they’re wrong wait and see. Someday we’ll find it, the rainbow connection. The lovers, the dreamers and me… “

Ruby was, of course, sitting as close to Adam as she possibly could--snuggled up contentedly in his lap as he told stories. She had even started nodding off to sleep, but when he began singing she became more alert. The song Adam was singing had been a bedtime staple in the Stewart-Connell household for as long as Ruby could remember; her fathers sang it to her at least twice a week. The little girl was hit with a pang of homesickness, and she let out a small whimper as tears sprang to her eyes.

“Okay… but after we tie up an appointment, lil’ monkey, you’re gonna make a beeline for Adam and ‘m gonna go help out a little more, okay? I want you to keep to the sides, stick with.. with people you know. No gettin’ hurt now or later.”

Ruby stuck her thumb in her mouth without voicing any objections to Jack’s plan, and she used her free hand to make sure her cannula was securely in place.

It was a lie, but… for her, it’d sound at least a little like the truth. It’d be days until he wasn’t busy again, weeks, maybe even months… “I promise, baby duck. But seriously, you gotta go see a nurse… ‘kay?”

“No! I’m only gonna go if you come wif me!” She insisted stubbornly. Staying in Jack’s secure embrace was the closest Ruby could currently get to being held by one of her fathers, which is what the little girl wanted more than anything else at that moment.

“Stay with me then, okay? I am not going anywhere and Jack will come see us when he’s not out looking, you know he will. But I will stay with you, okay? I’m not going anywhere, Princess.”

Ruby nodded, clutching tightly to Adam as she cried. “I wanna go home!” She insisted tearfully.

Ruby buried her face into Jack’s shoulder once more, feeling overwhelmed. “But I just finded you, what if I can’t find you ‘gain after you look for people?!”

“Hey, kiddo.. nah, ‘m not gonna just disappear, okay? I’m gonna go back out there, I’m gonna find some of our friends who might’ve gotten a little stuck, and then I’ll come right back here and find you. Promise.”

Ruby whimpered, not wanting to leave Jack’s arms now that she’d found him. She knew she’d have to let go soon, but for now she kept a tight grip on him. 

“You gotta pwomise you’ll come find me as soon as you’re done.”

“Hey, it’s okay.” He held her close. “We can ask a doctor if you can call your daddies, okay?” He gave her an understanding smile.

Ruby shook her head frantically. “Dr. Holmes telled me that you’ve gotta spend points to call home, no matter what!” She nestled closer to Brennan, her whole body trembling because she was so overwhelmed.

Adam ducked his head to allow the small girl to play with his hair, feeling relaxed for the first time since the quake. “I know you do, I wish we all could, but it’s too dangerous for that right now. I’m sorry, princess, I really am.”

Ruby sniffled. “I don’t wanna get sep’rated from you again, wanna stay wif you or Jack-Jack.”

Adam held her tightly, rubbing her back softly trying to comfort her as well as he could. This whole situation was terrifying for him, but for a child, he could only imagine how hard it must be for her. She didn’t deserve to face this, she deserved to be safe, to feel happiness, not this. “Yes, Jack is safe. He saved me, brought me here. He will be back in a bit. He’s going to be so happy to see you.”

Ruby moved one of her hands so it could gently card through Adam’s hair, the repetitive action soothing her. “I wanna go home, I want my daddies to come get me.”

“Well… ‘m not leaving just yet, ‘kay? We’re gonna get you checked out first, and.. maybe we’ll find someone who can help you around while I go and look for… anyone still hidin’?”

“Brennan and Natalina…” Thank ‘em later. “That’s okay, baby duck, but d’you wanna go see if we can find a nurse? Just so we know that you’re all good and.. everything.”

Ruby frowned a little, looking apprehensive. “Don’t wanna leave you...” She said with a whimper.

“Bruises.. we can handle that– the people who helped, did you, uh.. did you get their names? Did any of the nurses check you out?” Jack’s voice was tight, exhaustion amplifying his worries as the dam broke. 

“Umm...there was Bwennan, and Natalina, and I dunno the other people’s names. No nurses, though.” She said, her brow furrowed in concentration.

“Hey.” Brennan wrapped his thin arms around her, kissing the top of her head. “We’re gonna be fine, yeah? Can ya call her yer mommy and daddy?”

Ruby shook her head. “I don’t have a mommy, I want my daddy and papa!” She wailed, her cries echoing in the deserted hallway.

Ruby held tightly to Jack, feeling overwhelmed but still happy to see him. “I only getted some bruises and stuff, plus my ox’gen tank breaked, but people helped me find new ones.”

Tears filled Brennan’s eyes as he wrapped his frail arms around her, pressing a gentle kiss to her head. “Me too. I-I wanna g-get outta h-here too.” He whispered, although he couldn’t say home was necessarily where he wanted to go. Maybe a motel in Arizona or something…

Ruby stuck her thumb in her mouth, not caring that her hands weren’t exactly clean. She needed the comforting, repetitive action to soothe her. “W-Want my papa and my dada...” She whimpered, voice slightly muffled because she was sucking her thumb.
