The only thing holding Adam together was her embrace, he could feel himself slipping through as he fought to keep hold. He had to keep it together for her, she needed him to. Adam has always been the strong one and that would never change, even if he were the problem. He was his own destruction, his own worst enemy at the life he had left. But even the strongest broke at times, even he would crumble and he was hanging together by a thread. Tragedy seemed to plague the young man, but it seemed to teach him a lesson he had yet to realize he’d learned. From the stabbing, the earthquake, and the loss of so many people who were dear to him in a years time...He learned the only thing he could control was himself and that was enough. But as he met her tear filled eyes, he felt as if he didn’t have control of that. He felt his heart sink, shattering from the words that tumbled from her lips. The walls he’d built up time and time again, after Madelyn, after Jack...he felt himself come undone, she broke him down, she made it in,and he could only hope she didn’t hate him for what she would find and already found. Adam placed his hand on her wrists, holding on to her. “No, no, I won’t hurt you--I won’t hurt myself either. I just need--I need you, I need you to just be here, be my friend, stand by me...”He sniffed, the tears falling from his hazel eyes.Adam held on to the girl, nearly picking her up off the ground. He placed a kiss to the side of her head, trying to help her clam down and anchor himself down, but most of all keep hold of her. He needed her, he needed to be there for her and he couldn’t let her down, not again. “It’’s over,  no more, okay? We hurt together and I won’t hurt you, not anymore, never again. I won’t hurt myself. I won’t hurt you.” He sore, meaning it for the first time in his life. He would never be the cause of his own pain, not if it costed someone else their own happiness, their own peace. He smoothed her hair, the sobs burning his lungs. “I will never do that to you, not you. Things will be better, I will make them better for us, I promise.”
