i hope i make you laugh forever! (forgot tumblr existed again womp womp)
I wanna develop a drawing practice but i can get a little intimidated, I was wondering if you had any advice? I love ur art, its always so cute.
Oh thank you!!
I honestly get a lot out of reading books on drawing and technique... I found Keys to Drawing by Bert Dodson to be SUPER helpful when I was starting to take art more seriously. I think Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is a classic for a good reason too. Both of these books are good in helping you learn to see in the way you need to see to draw well, and you can find cheap used versions pretty easily. I recommend following through the exercises in each, even if they seem boring!
I think the classic advice of carrying a sketchbook around and drawing from life is really good advice. I don't always follow it well these days because I work from home and am inside a lot, I'm busy, etc, but it's a great practice. You'll learn good techniques from the books above to help you do this too!
I also thought for a long time that it was wrong to copy the work of other artists. Don't be afraid to do this! Especially if you wanna make stuff that's more stylized, copying the work of artists you admire is going to help you learn how to simplify shapes and stylize in ways you like and may not have arrived at on your own. My sketchbooks are packed with drawings of other peoples' drawings. Obviously don't try to pass it off as your own work, but it's a great way to learn. I remember someone talking once about how musicians aren't expected to come up with their own unique pieces when they're learning to play an instrument... they learn to play existing songs. You're allowed and encouraged to do the same thing with your art.
Finally, try to keep a positive attitude about it. Drawing is supposed to be fun and something you do for yourself. If you catch yourself focusing too much on the end product, how people on social media might react, if your idea is too generic, etc, try to push those thoughts aside and have patience with yourself. Don't compare yourself to anyone but yourself, and draw what interests you! I hope this helps... feel free to message if you have specific questions!
I really appreciate all the love I'm getting for my tapestry! It took forever and I'm really proud of it so thank you <3 I'm really looking forward to getting more photos of it to share so keep an eye out O__O
ALSO if you know how to crochet, making something like this is actually not that hard. I know it looks very complicated and impressive, and it did take me like 80 hours, but the technique itself is not very advanced. Here's the tutorial I used. I did a different variation than what is shown in the video; it's similar to the second technique (ch2) but with EXTENDED double crochet instead of a normal double crochet, which prevents the pattern from becoming stretched out. Treble crochet works too! I made my own pattern with StitchFiddle and Aseprite.

✨ AUDIOBOOK REVIEW ✨
This Much Is True by Miriam Margolyes
QOTD: Who’s a celebrity you’d like to know more about?
[instagram]
This was just as hilarious and unflinchingly honest as I expected it to be. Miriam Margolyes is an expert storyteller and this book was a joy to listen to.
I loved learning about her early life and her time at Cambridge, hearing stories about all the unique, talented, wonderful people she’s bumped shoulders with throughout her life.
She has an opinion on just about everything, and while we don’t always agree, I can’t fault her honesty and at times even found it had me laughing out loud.
very self indulgent kuroo for a ko-fi request 💊💊
