25 Activities Black People Should Avoid Around Cops
One of the most poignant responses to emerge from Wednesdayâs grand jury decision to not indict a police officer in Eric Garnerâs death was Tweeted out by Ijeoma Oluo, a writer, marketing manager, and mother of two young boys. âWe can be shot in the street. We can be choked to death on camera. This is all legal,â she Tweeted. âIt is open season on black folks.â
"Iâm a black mom trying to navigate this world and to figure out how to raise my kids in what can be a very hostile environment," she told Intelligencer. The series of more than two dozen messages was meant to highlight the absurdity of critics who say black people are safe if they just "donât do" things that make them look suspicious, Oluo says.
Below are Oluoâs Tweets, linked to the incidents they mention:
Donât play in the park with toy guns and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât ask for help after a car accident and maybe they wonât kill you.Donât wear a hoodie and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât cosplay with a toy sword and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât shop at Walmart and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât take the BART and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât ride your bike and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât reach for your cell phone and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât go to your friendâs birthday party and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât sit on your front stoop and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât "startle" them and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât "look around suspiciously" and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât walk on a bridge with your family and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât play âcops and robbersâ with your buddiesand maybe they wonât kill you. Donât work in a warehouse repairing instruments and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât stand in your grandmaâs bathroom and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât pray with your daughters in public and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât go to your bachelor party and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât have an ex boyfriend who might be a suspect and maybe they wonât kill you. Donâtcall for medical help for your sister and maybe they wonât kill her. Donâthang out in the park with your friends and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât get a flat tire and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât park in a fire lane and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât reach for your wallet and maybe they wonât kill you. Donât let your medical alert device go off and maybe they wonât kill you. Iâm done for today. My heart canât handle any more.

The United States, a relatively young nation/empire, needs to take some serious fucking inventory. Pretending the twin sins of the holocaust of the Native American population & the slavery, subjugation & mass murder of African Americans doesnât have damning, enduring consequences will poison us to death. THESE THINGS HAPPENED and their after-effects continue to kill and maim and destroy. Does a gunshot echo? Can you hear it across town? Acknowledge this. Fuck you, âslaveryâs over;â sure if it were a faucet, it got turned down or whatever, but it didnât fucking get turned off, people are still getting soaked and itâs with blood. Black people and people who love and care about black people have a beef thatâs as legitimate as a fucking hand grenade. And what the fuck do I know Iâve never suffered racism in my life. But I have FUNCTIONING EYES in my head and access to history books. Get right with yourself America.
This idea of having to explain why itâs racial when weâre swimming in our own blood is silly.
