The Dining Lounge, Again

I have already established publicly my obsession about The Dining Lounge. No reason why it shouldn't be. But till now, my experience there, was all about the Chicago Style Deep Dish Pizza. It was time I explored other options.

As a result, despite my friend's repeated claim, "ডাইনিং লাউঞ্জ আর আগের মত নাই", my stubborn behind refused to go anywhere else. He said that he went there during Ramadan, and did not like the food, or the service, at all. I refuted to that claim saying that it is simply not possible for these kinds of restaurants to maintain quality during the craziness 'Iftar parties' have become. Deep inside I was almost praying. "Dear Food, please be good."

We ordered Pasta Basta (Photo 1) and Italian Style Pizza Americana (didn't realize how weird this sounds until I wrote this down -_- ) The pasta was superb. Oh that lovely smell of Parmesan! The quantity was great, taste was awesome. But, but oh but, even the site of the Pizza Americana (Photo 2) was a let down for me. Just before the pizza had arrived, I was talking about how I like eggs separately, but I don't like eggs in/on fast food (Burgers, Chopsuey). Didn't even considered the possibility of eggs on a pizza, and that's exactly what I was presented with (someone up there apparently listens to what you say). It kind of looked like the Indian 'Paneer', but to my utter disappointment, they were little chunks of egg whites.  I did not like it. My friend, who does not have a bias against eggs, said he liked it just okay, average.

The owner came to meet us when 2 of the 8 slices were left (I would not eat much as I did not like it - if that thought crossed your mind, you don’t know me at all). When he asked how our experience was, I gave my honest opinion. I told him how the pasta was great and the pizza was a disappointment. He asked for further details, such as exactly what was missing and how it could be improved. I gave as detailed review as I could, saying how the eggs were unnecessary, how the cheese didn't have that mesmerizing smell it should have had and tasted bland. He then said he thinks he understands what we seek, what we would like and asked us if we wanted to try another pizza, 'on the house'.

Suppressing the tears of joy and stopping myself from jumping around saying, "Oh god yes", I managed to say "yeah sure." After some moments of anticipation about how the 'Owner's Choice Pizza' would be, we were presented with Pizza Barcelona. By all means, it was amazing. The sight of it, the smell of it and the taste of it had our faith in The Dining Lounge restored. That delightful aroma of Parmesan Cheese blended with the roasted beef, mushroom and I don’t know what else, made us ecstatic.

That is the thing about honest reviews. By giving you honest opinion about a product in a constructive way, you give the other side a chance to improve their products. The result is scrumptious food for us and happy loyal customers for the business. Also, it is necessary for the business to know how to take criticisms and take steps accordingly. The Dining Lounge gets full marks on that.

Coming home

The test results show that I am MRD negative (less than 0.01%) and there is no visible blast. In other words, I am cancer free.

However.

When I am taking stem cells from a donor, the cells are supposed to fight with my immune system, causing some mild disease. These are called Graft vs Host Disease (GVHD). Mild GVHD should happen as that means my brother's cells are fighting with mine, preventing the chance of my cells going rogue again (you naughty, naughty cells).

I have had no sign of GVHD. Meaning, the problem is that I don't have a problem. Now to cause some GVHD Lymphosites can be collected from my brother and infused into me. But after that if grade 4 GVHD develops it might be life threatening.

After weighing the options a board of doctors in their meeting decided that they want to observe how my body behaves for 2 more months. After that they will decide if I need further treatment.

In a nutshell, I am cancer free for now. More can be done to ensure that it won't come back. If that will be done or not will be decided after 2 months. Now, I am coming home.

Science Bitch

Did I say that I have reached my bone marrow/stem cell transplant plus Day 90 mark? And did I say that my blood group was previously O+ and after the successful completion of this period and the whole transformation, my blood group is now A+? That is my stem-cell-donating-brother's blood group. And I feel like a science project.

View from another window.

Today is the first time this year that it is raining in the afternoon and I am able to enjoy it, standing by the window, even that with a cup of tea. The milk tea is a big deal actually; I know other BMT patients whose transplants were done days before mine, but their bodies still don't respond to milk very well. Not responding well - haha - that's toning it down in a big scale. Thankfully milk didn't have such negative effect on me.

So I was watching the rain. I was watching these boys ride their cycles through the narrow road in the field with umbrellas held high over their heads with one hand. The shops that are in the road between our house and this field (not visible in the picture) are closed today, due to expected vandalism, today being the election result day here. Only a few moving figures as far as my eyes can see, in a city like Kolkata, well okay a corner of Kolkata, this vast greenery, this cold wind; I am not busy enough to not be moved by this.

This serenity makes me realize, the world IS beautiful. That's not news for most people but the people who know me well enough should be surprised that I am saying this. I am generally the person who says it's all fucked up, that life is not worth living, that life can not offer me anything ever that will make me say, "It was all worth it." The feeling did not completely change just by a beautiful afternoon, it will take more than that, but I realize that the disgust I feel for the world in general is caused by humans. Cut the human being from the world and it is b-e-a-u-tiful. Nature is better off without eyes to appreciate it; the number of eyes that appreciate nature is much lower than the number of eyes that want to benefit from it. Since November 26, 2011, before going to sleep I asked myself a lot of times if I minded this being the last night, if I wanted to wake up to another day. The answer has mostly been, no. But I guess I would like to wake up to a world with no humans. I would wander around, experience nature. That would be nice, yes.

নববর্ষ

মনে ২ টা ভাবনা।

১. ভূমিকম্প কালকে হল তাতেই মানুষ বলা শুরু করলো যে এটা পহেলা বৈশাখ না পালন করার জন্যে আল্লাহর হুঁশিয়ারি। আজকে হলে কি করতো?

২. পহেলা বৈশাখ পালন করা যাবেনা কারন নারী প্রুষ মেলামেশা করে, বেলেল্লাপনা করে (this word though :3)। এখন ভুমিকম্প হলেও তো সবাই রাস্তায় নেমে আসে, তাও কি, রাতের বেলায়ও। নারীপ্রুষ সবাই। গভীর রাতে বেগানা নারী রাস্তায় নেমে আসলে তো বেলেল্লাপনায় দেশ রসাতলে যাবে। তাইলে ভুমিকম্পের সময়েও মেয়েদের রাস্তায় নেমে আসার বিরুদ্ধে ফতোয়া চাই চাই চাই।

ঢাকার পহেলা বৈশাখ মিস করি। আম্মু আমাকে ঠেলে মার্কেটে পাঠাতে পারতো না এমনিতে, পহেলা বৈশাখের আগে নিজ উদ্যোগে গিয়ে জামাকাপড় কিনতাম। ছোটবেলায় আব্বু আম্মুর সাথে রমনায় যেতাম ভোর বেলা। বড় হয়ে পাখা গজানোর পর টই টই করে চিপা চাপা কই কই দিয়ে কই কই যাইতাম ঠিক নাই। পহেলা বৈশাখে সামিল হতে বাসা থেকে বেরোনো লাগতো না অবশ্য। সেগুনবাগিচায় থাকি ২০০৪ থেকে, ভোর থেকেই মানুষ পিল পিল করে হাঁটা শুরু করতো বাসার সামনে দিয়ে। বারান্দায় গিয়ে নিচে তাকালেই চারিদিকে লাল সাদা। আগের রাতে ফেসবুকে দেখা পহেলা বৈশাখ বর্জনের ৪-৫ টা পোস্টের বিপরীতে ৪-৫ লক্ষ মানুষ। বোমা হামলার হুমকির জবাব দিতে রিকশায় বাবা মা ফুটফুটে বাচ্চার হাওয়া খেতে খেতে যাওয়া। কি অসাধারণ! মনটা ভরে যেত।

শুধু এই দিনটাতেই মনের মধ্যে ভাবনাটা একটু উঁকি দিয়ে যায়, সবকিছু হয়তো নষ্টদের অধিকারে যাবে না।

Our plan was to have Mr. Burger burgers for lunch. We reached the place at 2pm but found out that the place wouldn't open until 5 pm. Thus, we moved to Al Fresco. 2 pizzas and Al Fresco chicken (4pc) were ordered for we 4 people.

Between the time the pizza was served and I could grab the phone out of my purse, two slices were taken out. So here is a crappy photo of the pizza, no photo of another pizza and Al Fresco chicken. One of the pizzas was good, another was okayish. Among the other 3 only 1 friend was just as ভুখা নাঙ্গা as I am, so even though we two ate 5 slices each, in the end 3 slices were left. My reputation as a pizza lover was at stake, but this time, just this time, I chose health over reputation and did not attempt to eat up the slices.

আমার জন্ম খিলগাঁও এ। আম্মুর কাছ থেকে শোনা যে আব্বু আম্মুরা বিয়ের পর সবমিলিয়ে চারবার খিলগাঁও বাসা নিয়েছিল। আড়াই বছর বয়সে ধানমন্ডি চলে যাই বলে আমার সেইসব কোনো স্মৃতি নাই। আত্মীয় স্বজনের বাসা যাওয়া উপলক্ষে কয়েকবার হয়তো যাওয়া হয়েছিল, সেও অনেক আগে।

এখনকার 'নতুন' খিলগাঁও এ যাই প্রথম ২০১৩/১৪ এ, Tanzil Ahmed এর সাথে Cafe Cherry Drops এ। ঐখানে এত কিছু হয়ে গেসে দেখে বেশ অবাক হইসিলাম। এরপরে বেশ অনেকবার যাওয়া হয়েছে। যাওয়ার সময় আম্মু জিজ্ঞেস করতো কোন এলাকায় যাও, তখন অনেকবারই বলেছি খিলগাঁও। এটা শুনে আম্মু :-/ এই ফেস করতো আর বলতো ঐখানে আবার কি। ঐখানে যে কি সেটা আম্মুকে নিয়ে গিয়ে দেখাবো এটা বহুদিনের প্ল্যান ছিল, আজকে সেটা সফল হল।

কয়েকমিনিটের ঝিরিঝিরি বৃষ্টি, কেরি সাহেবের আগমন, ঢাবির বাস উলটা দিয়ে যাওয়া জাতীয় নানা কারণে আজ জঘন্য জ্যাম ছিল। পল্টন থেকে খিলগাঁও যেতে লাগলো ঘন্টা খানেক। Pizza আর পাস্তা অর্ডার করবো ভাবছিলাম, গিয়ে দেখি কারেন্ট নাই, এগুলা হতে অনেক দেরি হবে। তখন বাজে তিনটা, আম্মু ক্ষুধা লাগলে খুবই কাতর হয়ে যায়। তাই আর অপেক্ষা না করে অর্ডার করলাম বিফ স্টেক আর রেগুলার প্ল্যাটার।

অপেক্ষা করতে করতে এদিক ওদিক তাকাতে তাকাতে দেখি সেই Tanzil Ahmed একটা টেবিলে বসে গভীর মনোযোগ দিয়ে কিছু লিখছে। বেশ কিছুক্ষন দেখা হল এবং কথাবার্তা হল।

এরপর খাবার এল। আমার স্টেকের সাথে গ্রিল্ড ভেসিটেবল, পেপার সস, ম্যাশড পটেটো এবং মেয়নেজে মাখানো ফ্রেঞ্চ ফ্রাইজের মত করে কাটা আপেল? -_- আম্মুর রেগুলার প্ল্যাটারে ছিল ফ্রাইড রাইস, দুইটা স্পাইসি চিকেন, বিফ কারি এবং ভেজিটেবল কারি। পরিবেশন বেশ সুন্দর ছিল, কিন্তু খাবার আহামরি লাগে নাই। এগুলো আর তিনটা কোক নিয়ে বিল আসলো ১১০৪ টাকা।

সেই প্রথম দিন থেকে মনে করে আসছি যে নেক্সটবার এখানে আসলে অবশ্যই pizza খাবো কিন্তু সেটা কেন যেন হয়ে উঠে না। যাই হোক, Next time :3

It's been 13 days since I have reached Dhaka. Being away from the Dhaka food scenario for a whole year was worse than being a টাক্কু বেল. So I had big foodie hopes for me after coming back. খায়াদায়া উল্টায় লামু টাইপ।

So far I am doing that. Been to Bhoj twice. Been to Mesquite Grill. Al Fresco. Khana's. Been to a বিয়ে বাড়ি where I had পোলাও রোস্ট খাসির রেজালা সালাদ বোরহানি (Ah it feels good to even write that I ate it! I had dreams about eating biye bari food SO MANY TIMES!) and been to a family dawat. Here are some pictures and details.

Bhoj was right next to my house previously; a year and half ago they shut down and 6 months ago they started again in a new place, which is a 30 second walk. I saw in their facebook page that they started again when I was in Kolkata and I couldn’t wait to come back and have their Moglai. I rushed to the place the day after I came to Dhaka but was saddened to know that the ‘কারিগর’ who makes the moglais and rolls is away and Bhoj is not serving them right now. With a heavy heart I and my friend decided to order something else and my friend said that he saw someone have a ‘green chicken’ someday; he wanted to have that. We told the waiter that we wanted the green chicken they served and the item turned out to be Chicken Hariyali Kabab. So we ordered Chicken Tikka Kabab, Chicken Hariyali Kabab, Mogoj Bhuna and Butter naan. The taste of food at bhoj is almost always good and these items were no different. Took a picture of just the Hariyali Kabab, how can you not take a picture of this green thing.

Before leaving the place I asked for the manager, gave him my number and requested him to give me a call when the কারিগর is back and moglai is available. The manager did call me this last Saturday and informed me that moglai is here. I was on a mission to explore ‘300 feet’ on that day so I told him that I will visit the next day. And I did. I had the moglai. The mighty beef cheese moglai :’) Though it was a bit crispier than how I like my moglais to be, still it was good. I told the manager about this and he told me they will have it right the next time.

Bucket Biriyani

কিছুদিন আগে বসুন্ধরা সিটির দিল্লী দরবারের বাকেট বিরিয়ানির ছবি দেখে খেতে ইচ্ছা হল। গেলাম, খেলাম। প্রেজেনটেশনটাই আহামরি, বিরিয়ানি আর দশ জায়গার সাধারণ বিরিয়ানির মতই। বালতি থেকে কেঁচে বিরিয়ানি বের করে খাচ্ছি ব্যাপারটা ভালোই অবশ্য :3 দাম ৫৫০, দুইজনের জন্যে যথেষ্ট। একবার খাইসি, খারাপ লাগেনাই, কিন্তু আবার খাওয়ার ইচ্ছাও নাই।

আমার সবচেয়ে প্রিয় খানাদানার লিস্টঃ

১। Pizza ২। Steak, burger, শিক কাবাব, lasagna (in to particular order :3 ) ৩। খিচুড়ি দিয়ে গরুর মাংস, কাচ্চি

তো এই লিস্ট অনুযায়ী আমার ভয়াবহ আনন্দের একটা সপ্তাহ যাচ্ছে। গত শুক্রবার ধানমন্ডির প্রিয়াংকা কমিউনিটি সেন্টারে একটা বিয়ের দাওয়াত ছিল। আমার আব্বুর চাচাতো ভাইয়ের ছেলের ভাতিজার বিয়ে :v বিয়েতে যাওয়ার আগে পাত্র পাত্রীর existence এর কথাও আমার জানা ছিল না, কিন্তু তাতে কি :3 অসাধারণ কাচ্চি, রোস্ট, জালি কাবাব আর ৩ গ্লাস বোরহানি সাবাড় করে চলে আসলাম।

আসার সময় ভাইয়া আব্বু আম্মুকে জিজ্ঞেস করলো 'জুশ' খেতে চায় কিনা। পজিটিভ উত্তর আসায় আমরা গেলাম ধানমন্ডির ঠান্ডা গরমে। এর এক্সিসটেন্সের কথা আগে জানা থাকলেও খাওয়া হয়নি কখনো। যা অভিজ্ঞতা হল তাতে আমি অভিভূত। অর্ডার করার আগে এত্ত এত্তগুলা ফ্লেভারের মধ্যে যেটাই চাই ছোট্ট শট গ্লাসে করে সেটা টেস্ট করতে দিল। টেস্ট করে লাভ হয়নাই যদিও। টেস্ট করার কারণ কি? কোনটা ভালো কোনটা খারাপ বিচার করা। আমাদের কারোই কোনোটাই খারাপ লাগে নাই :3কয়েকটা টেস্ট করে শেষ পর্যন্ত আব্বু, আম্মু, ভাইয়া এবং আমি যথাক্রমে নিলাম ডেউয়া (এই ফলের যে জুস হতে পারে কোনদিন ভাবিনাই), জাম, বরই এবং কতবেলের জুস। নিজেরটা খাইসি অন্যদেরটাও টেস্ট করসি, সবই মজা ছিল। এখানে আবার যাইতে চাই কাঠালের জুস খাওয়ার জন্যে!

Did quite a foodventure today. Have been planning to do a "comparative analysis" on the burger joints at Dhanmondi for quite a long time; end of the exhausting marketing final seemed like a good occasion for this. First we went to Madchef, ordered one Regular Tandoori Chicken burger (left) (220/=), then went to Take Out, ordered one Supreme Chicken burger (right) (300/=) and lastly went to Grilled, ordered All American beef burger and asked them to replace poached egg with a layer of mushroom (ছবি নাইক্যা) (180/=). All of them were SO GOOD! I would give both Madchef and Take Out burgers the first position. Grilled was great too, but the others were just better. According to Saddam, Grilled was good, Take Out was great, but Madchef was mindblowing. After this we went to Sampan, had a coffee and an iced coffee. ৪ জায়গায় ঘুরে টোটাল খরচ হইসে ৮৬৫ টাকা \m/
