How To Catch A Mouse
Scott McCloud, Understanding Comics
Entering the third stage of his long and illustrious career, Akira Kurosawa’s first color film Dodes’ka-den (1970, Japan… also spelled Dodesukaden, an onomatopoeic sound that roughly translates to “click-clack”) has no central story, features none of Kurosawa’s regular actors and actresses, and features a curious melange of characters living in a Technicolor-bathed slum next to a garbage dump. When we think of Kurosawa and his jidgaigeki films, Dodes’ka-den comes from a completely different, refreshingly experimental direction that would resonate in some of his later color films, most notably Kagemusha and Dreams.
The film is not one of Kurosawa’s best and because it was so personal a project, Kurosawa took the lack of critical praise and the film’s utter commercial failure quite hard, sending him into a depression that would not lift for some years. Not until the Soviet Union and two fellows named George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola came knocking on the door would this difficult decade abate.
Though no comfort came anywhere from Japan, there was was some consolation to be had in America. Dodes’ka-den would be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
