Fairy Tail AU because this series turned 20 this year and I am absolutely Phaidei pilled
Mydei uses Crystal Make Magic, he makes red crystal armor and fights hand-to-hand
Phainon uses what I'm calling Coreflame Magic, which is sorta like Requip except instead of using different weapons or armor, he enhances his body based on the different coreflames (this is very much a work in progress, I don't know what each one does quite yet)
They are both S-Rank wizards (called Heirs) for the guild Chrysos, based in Okhema, a city in the province of Amphoreus, Fiore. During the 7 year time skip, they became a major wizarding guild thanks to the current generation of Heirs being the strongest they have ever seen
Phainon and Mydei are a team, usually joined by Cyrene. They are the powerhouse of the guild, easily the strongest mages there and Phainon especially is the poster boy of Chrysos
I've also got a few preliminary sketches + where their guild marks are located
Thinking about how the one time we see Phainon fight back at Mydei telling him to go was literally at the end of the world and it was just those two left
Phainon knew it was his destiny to witness Era Nova alone, but he still insisted Mydei come along because "damn it, we got this far together I refuse to lose you, too"
And we know Mydei never lies for the sake of comfort so when he says he'll transcend fate his own way, I think that's him saying "like hell I'm gonna go out so easily you're fucking stuck with me HKS"

As of posting this, it has 3 chapters of two gay idiots floundering around trying to be normal humans in front of their crushes and their friends having front row seats to the silly

This looks like the start of a movie/video game where Phainon is Just A Guy:tm: and Mydei is the competent badass that accidentally recruits a civilian into the plot
For those that don't know, cats are extremely guarded creatures; they are hardwired to be alert for danger at all times. So when they sleep, they actually sleep very lightly, as the a second too late on the reaction could lead to injury or worse (this is why cats get worried when their humans sleep in because to them that is very abnormal).
Now, when a cat sleeps, their position also reflects how safe they are. Guarded cats will sleep crouched, ready to pounce at a moment's notice. However, if a cat feels safe enough, they may lounge about or even expose their bellies because they are fully confident the place they're sleeping in is very safe.
So I like to headcanon all this onto Mydei because it makes perfect sense for him. He spent the first two and a half decades of his life constantly being in peril with death haunting every corner. I have a separate but tangential headcanon that sleep feels like dying sometimes so Mydei doesn't get to sleep all that often already, but even when he does, he wakes up at the slightest thing. He sleeps on his back or even sitting up because despite being functionally immortal it still hurts and he's still out of commission when he goes under, so he needs to stay guarded to at least protect what little he has.
Then he gets to Okhema. It's peaceful there, and while people aren't always welcoming, they won't outright kill him. He can take naps there, especially in the Garden of Life surrounded by all the chimera or even in the dromas paddocks with Kokopo. It's not full sleep but it's sleep enough.
And then there's Phainon. Infuriating, riduculous, warm and safe Phainon. Mydei just turns into full blown pretzel cat when he's sleeping next to Phainon, sprawled out in weird angles, back exposed, sometimes snores and even gets to sleep in sometimes. It's the most restful he's ever been because now he's in a place that isn't actively trying to kill him next to someone who he trusts with his life and death.

If you had told 16 year old Mydei, fresh off the recovery year he took after his father fucked up his soul, that in 7 years he would be a successful Meister with a weapon utterly devoted to him both on and off the battlefield, he would have thought you were utterly insane //executed again
I just finished rereading the entirety of Soul Eater and I'm so glad it still sparks joy (and decided to read Soul Eater NOT as well and I thought it was cute)
Playing around with the ideas for the Soul Eater AU, I think I like this one a lot
Might go with this, gonna let it simmer first cuz I already have a fantastic opening scene with this idea but also I really like the idea of Mydei with big fuck you sword

Please be nice to me, I haven't read Soul Eater in a while so I'm playing fast and loose with the lore here
- Phainon (21) and Mydei (23) have been partnered for about 7 years by the start of canon Soul Eater story
- Formerly of the EAT class, they have since graduated and travel often on assignements (their apartment is in Death City)
- If you ask them when did they get together, they'd say "a little after we graduated, so about 3 years ago"; if you ask their friends, they'd say "they've always been together, they were just stupid"

Phainon - Demon Weapon (Great Sword)
A demon weapon from a small, middle of nowhere town. His enrollment into DWMA was sponsored by Meister Anxagoras after he deduced Phainon had a rather rare soul type.
Seraphim Soul - Similarly rare soul type like a Grigori Soul, Seraphim Souls absorbs magic, madness and other such abilities and purifies them into more anti-demon wavelengths. There is a limit to how much can be aborbed all at once, but for the most part Phainon's own force of will staves off most madness effects.
Mydei - Meister / "Artifical" Demon Weapon (Spear)
Hailing from a long line of Meisters, the demon weapon gene he inherited from his mother was forcibly awakened by his father through madness experiments. When his mother found out, she sent him to DWMA so that Lord Death could keep an eye on him and help him through his unstable wavelengths.
Mydei's Madness - The experiments on Mydei made him far sturdier than most people, even other demon weapons, but his wavelengths induce madness in people exposed to it. His madness incites feelings of bloodlust and violence, making weapons he wields volatile and Meisters that wield him dangerous.
How did they get paired?
Mydei was originally not suppose to enroll as a student because of how dangerous his madness is; Gorgo sent him there so that Lord Death could look after him. Phainon had a few prospective partners already (including Trailblazer) but found Mydei by accident. Phainon assumed Mydei was an intruder and tried to fight him while Mydei thought Phainon was a demon weapon gone rogue.
When the teachers finally broke up the fight and explained the situation to them both (Phainon was a new student, Mydei is there for medical reasons), Phainon was intrigued about what Mydei was doing at DWMA if he wasnt a student so he started tailing him, until finally Mydei admits he's a Meister with a soul problem. This gets Phainon VERY excited because Mydei is super strong and Phainon would be fucking stoked to have him as his Meister. Mydei is like "Fuck no absolutely not" cuz he doesn't wanna kill Phainon with his wavelength.
But Phainon is not a quitter. He follows Mydei around for 10 days, practically begging for Mydei to partner up with him. Eventually, Anaxagoras hears about this and is like "Y'know what, fuck it, why don't you guys try, I'll observe in case things go wrong".
Mydei is horrified but if it'll mean Phainon would understand the danger and leave him alone, fine.
To everyones surprise (well, not Phainon, he didn't know until after this), Phainon didn't succumb to Mydei's madness.
Anxagoras explains to Phainon about Mydei's madness and the reason he couldn't be partnered with anyone, but Phainon is just "I'll take him, then! I proved I could handle it! I want Mydei to be my Meister!"
Meanwhile, Mydei was told that Phainon had a special soul that absorbs madness wavelengths and purifies it. This meant Mydei could be cleared for active duty, and possibly the key to solving his wavelength problem for good. Mydei is dumbfounded but he takes one look at sunshine incarnate and goes "Y'know what fine, fine. I accept."
I was suddenly gripped with the urge to brainrot a bit and draw Ego again
With 3.7, I can finally flesh out more thoughts on his lore as an adult but for now here he is as a young child
Early on he took a lot of influence from Mydei from dress to food preference to manner of stance, but as he got older he started taking on more and more of Phainon's traits like his hair, his cocky confidence, his ragebaiting tendencies- //kicked
The scar on his cheek was one he sustained from before the detachment arrived in Okhema. It's his oldest scar and he honestly can't remember where he got it
