"It will be alright," he said with assurance for both of them. His hands took hers to try and soothe her. "I truly doubt the ogres will come this way. We'll be safe." He didn't know if he believed his own words, but he hoped it would be enough.
Belle still didnât meet his gaze, but she did stare at their hands as they were interrwined. In that moment though, she didnât see Rumpleâs rough hand atop hers, but instead a soft creamy one-one of her motherâs. His words echoed in her mind, but she did not hear his voice, only the sweet melody of her mother as she had said similar things to Belle years ago when there was talk of ogres coming to Avonlea in her time. She softly began to cry and closed her eyes to fight away the horrible memory of when they finally came... âThey killed my mother...â
