Hearts can break. Yes, hearts can break. Sometimes I think it would be better if we died when they did, but we donât.

Its pretty bad now. Itâs fall. Itâll get worse in November it always does. Halloween I resent my friends. Thanksgiving and Christmas I resent my family. All the days in between, I resent myself

Never apologize for what you feel. Itâs like saying sorry for being real.

Remember, remember, this is now, and now, and now. Live it, feel it, cling to it. I want to become acutely aware of all Iâve taken for granted.

Victim vs. Survivor
The Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition of âvictimâ is simply, âone that is acted on and usually adversely affected by a force or agent.â If despite this, the word âvictimâ still somehow sounds derogatory to you, ask yourself why. Is it because you equate it with words like âweakâ and âpatheticâ and âpitifulâ? Is it because it reminds you of insulting phrases like âplaying the victimâ and âthe victim roleâ?Â
If so, these are connotations youâve absorbed from rape culture. Society is very uncomfortable with sexual assault survivors referring to themselves as âvictims,â because the word âvictimâ includes within its definition that the person did not have any control whatsoever over being assaulted; the person is not to blame for what happened to them. Society prefers to focus on the fact that, well, you survived, and thatâs the only part you should talk about: your survival, your healing, your thriving, not all that messy trauma stuff.
âVictimâ means that we need to look elsewhere for the blame; âvictimâ means we need to start talking about perpetrators, and society doesnât want to do that. We are taught a narrative of false empowerment: transform yourself from a victim (a weak person who blames others for your own problems) into a survivor (a person who is alive and okay now and thatâs all that matters)! Reject that narrative. You are a victim and a survivor and that is not shameful. The shame belongs with the perpetrator.
You are so brave and quiet I forget you are suffering.

Everyone hates knowing that tomorrow's Monday. But... we live on. Thinking about how another fun Saturday will come around. It isn't always Monday. -JJBA (at Waltham, Massachusetts)
