If you haven't heard, the em dash has been getting a lot of attention lately…
Because it was trained on pirated work—including freely accessible online writing (like fanfic, academic texts)—ChatGPT picked up patterns and quirks native to human writing.
Including (sigh) the em dash.
There are other victims here (RIP tapestry and delve 🫠), but the appropriation of the em dash—a punctuation mark beloved by writers everywhere—feels especially personal.
A kind of low-grade panic is ensuing. Writers who once memed their own em dash overuse—the greatest punctuation mark ever to grace the control-freak’s lexicon, frankly—are suddenly backing away to avoid accusations.
No. More. We have centuries of dash-abusing writers behind us. We will not sit quietly while AI repurposes our beloved stilted aside—or the just-one-more clarification the sentence demands—or the dramatic pause your comma could never—etc.
You don’t write like AI—AI writes like you.
Defend the em dash.
(Feel free to download/share/stick it where it matters!)
the thing that destroys me about Rumbelle is that Belle says she loves Rumple for the good she sees in him, for his potential to be better than he currently believes he is. and while on the surface that belief is encouraging and loving (and it does work to break down that wall he keeps between himself and the world), it also implies to him that Belle’s love is conditional on him always being that good man and not that she loves the man he is: his anger, insecurity, dark humor, manipulation, violence, and reliance on magic just as much as his curiosity, kindness, brilliance, tenderness, devotion, and romance. that there’s no room for nuance or compromise.
which means that even when he loves her back, he doesn’t trust that she’ll ever accept the whole of him, so he hides pieces of himself (the petty, the vengeful, the scared, the lost) because deep down he’s terrified that one wrong move, one wrong part of himself revealed, will remove her love for him. and just as in the prophecy that kicked off his journey, this too becomes self-fulfilling and he breaks Belle’s heart and trust and furthers his belief that he’s not worthy of love at all.
i cannot emphasize how much it sucks that people in movies don’t look real anymore. like conventionally attractive people have always been cast more as leads but up until like a decade ago they had visible age lines and textured skin and double chins and imperfect teeth. like whenever i’m feeling insecure i just have to watch a regular movie from the 70s and remind myself that im actually not unhygienic and disgusting for having teeth that are a little yellow and visible pores
genuinely social media has fucked everything up and we need to realize that the average person is normal and you are in fact allowed to make art and exist in the public eye while not looking like an airbrushed 20 year old and that your personal appearance really does not matter that much
Rumbelle AU: Everything is black and white until you meet your soulmate, but when your soulmate dies, the world goes back to being black and white. {insp.}

Bonus:
You tell yourself you did the right thing. And if you say it often enough, one day you might actually believe it.
