[ID: a collage of a panel of Cherri cola and a tweet by him. It has top and bottom text in impact font reading, "what zero pussy does to a MF." The tweet reads, "been eating sound-waves and living off frequencies for weeks now… look like a million bucks, who wants to date me?" End ID]
[ID: A panel of the girl from the comic book danger days the true lives of the fabulous killjoys, she is smiling. Underneath is edited text that says, “She has 97 mental illnesses and is avoiding most public spaces but she is your friend :)” /End ID]
Another Danger Days detail that isn't brought up: The Motel.
Yes, that HAS always been there. People have been assuming that the Killjoys slept in the dinner, when there has in fact been a whole ass MOTEL right around the corner.
Tommy owns the motel and charges exorbitant prices, and that’s why they sleep in the dinner
val velocity: when life gives you lemons, don't make lemonade. make life take the lemons back! get mad! i don't want your damn lemons, what the hell am i supposed to do with these? demand to see life's manager! make life rue the day it thought it could give val velocity lemons! do you know who i am? i'm the person who's gonna burn your house down! with the lemons! i'm gonna get my engineers to invent a combustible lemon that burns your house down!
fun ghoul, flirting: how's the sexiest person here?
party poison, flirting: i don't know, how are you?
fun ghoul, flustered: i-
show pony, from across the room: i'm doing good, thanks!
does the girl have a tamagatchi on her belt loop?? thats so cute 🥺🥺
she does!! she got it from Newsies place and it never runs out of battery :)
i would love to hear about your zone religions hcs
hehehe you asked a great time! it’s my th*nksgiving and y’all have to hear about my native zones headcanons
so the basics!
i firmly believe that the zones were originally a reservation, so most of the religious beliefs/practices are super similar to native beliefs/practices
most zone-borns are native, or have been taught the practices
the phoenix witch is the primary deity (like in canon) and acts as the Mother Nature figure
the killjoys believe in animism, or that everything has a spirit. which is why they use the mask to lay a soul to rest
these are all sorta miscellaneous and in no particular order
arrowheads are a huge item in the zones, which symbolize alertness. killjoys often wear them on necklaces or keep them on their person
arrows are also another huge symbol, which symbolize protection and defense. they are worn as accessories or tattooed
i love the concept of zone powwows! there are stands with bad luck beads, traditional beadwork, bone necklaces (which are also very common in the zones), dreamcatchers, etc etc
also at powwows, there are traditional dancers, who have been taught by their elders and will teach younger ‘joys
due to the nature of the zones, “elders” aren’t particularly old. they tend to be killjoys who have been are well versed in the practices and/or perform ceremonies
there are also two-spirit killjoys!! these people tend to perform healing roles in their gang and are able to communicate with the witch easier than some (i personally hc ghoul as two-spirit)
sage is very significant in spiritual practices, so there are specific “tommy chow mein” esque people who grow and sell it
there are morning and night prayers to the witch that dedicated killjoys do, as well as prayers for after another ‘joy passes
braiding is another huge practice. people braid their hair not only to keep it out of their face and protect it, but also to have a unity with the witch and their earth
i have a lot more little ideas, but those are more character specific. this is just a good intro to my concepts! lmk if y’all wanna hear any more!!
ok i said i was gonna say a thing so here’s me saying it even tho i’ll probably say it all wrong BUT ANYWAY
The interpretation of Traffic Report is all in the inflection. The saying “Die with your mask on if you’ve got to” in fact implies that the killjoy way, the norm if you will, is to die WITHOUT your mask on. Which only makes sense.
If you know you’re on a halohead mission, you take that thing off. You have nothing left to hide, nothing left to lose. You show your true face, one last act of defiance before you go down in laserfire and glory.
In Traffic Report, Dr D isn’t saying you better die with your mask on. He’s saying if death comes too quick for you to get your mask off, it’s okay.
“Die with your mask on — if you’ve got to.”
That’s why the four weren’t wearing their masks on the Sing mission. They already knew it was their last.
Very cute that everyone decided to make it so battery city has prisons as if the exterminators, scarecrows and dracs don't just go out and either kill/drac the people they come across
You know i just remembered that in the comics after blue escapes and they catch her, she's put in the back of those uhhhhhhh vans for transporting prisoners (? Idk the name), so why're they there? Doubt that many droids get out and need to be captured. Conflicting evidence. Thoughts?
It depends on how important they’re to BL/i. A citizen who had their headphones too high? Disposable. There’s thousands others just like them inside City limits. A droid that bleeds- that isn’t affected by the City’s electricity or lack thereof? You can’t just have that running around. God knows what’d happen if you couldn’t keep an eye on them. On what they’re saying. On what they’re remembering.
Or take a killjoy for example. Some random teenager running around the Zones with a blaster and a can of spray paint is bothersome, yes, but at the same it’s inconsequential and disposable. There’s a whole desert of those out there! But a kid close to The Fabulous Four- the spark of the Zones revolution? Now, that is an asset.
BL/i’s system thrives on information- there’s just more than one way you can get it through
The fabulous killjoys are just the "do it for her" meme but with pictures of the girl
once i saw someone in a server im in say the girl is trans and "shes called The Girl for a reason" and yall im just gonna say. 🥺🥺
Do you have any hcs for the Girl? Because I love her and I must know everyone’s Thoughts™ on her
i do have MANY but i’m gonna only pick ones that don’t contain Big Future Fic Spoilers so this isn’t all of them, merely a Taste™:
hellish combination of being simultaneously extremely touch starved and extremely touch shy. spent the first 3 or so years of her life in relative isolation in a BLI containment unit, so she didn’t get much in the way of physical affection. she got used to only being touched when BLI doctors and specialists wanted something from her (blood work, tests, etc.) so it took her a minute to realize she’s actually an EXTREMELY physically affectionate person by nature. cuddling, hugging, handholding, piggyback rides - she loves all of it. it was a learning curve for her cause she was touch averse by survival instinct thanks to how BLI treated her, took her a bit to figure out that touch is Good, Actually. spending a lot of time on her own after the four’s death until the events of the comics was kind of a nightmare for her since she was so isolated.
afro latina cause i said so! i love her
such a little foulmouth oh my god. the four made absolutely no attempt to prevent this and were in fact extremely proud that she grew up spewing the filthiest expletives known to the zones. means people know she can handle herself! and the four all know that there is nothing on this earth more terrifying than being charged by a three foot tall toddler screaming FUCK YOU!!!!! in your face
gets a bit of weird bleedthrough in parts of the zones where reality is especially tenuous. the first time she saw a mailbox she didnt realize that she was crying, or why. she couldnt explain why the sight of it weighed on her. she really doesnt like going near mailboxes since every time she gets close enough to one she gets this immense melancholy, a pathological distress that doesnt feel one hundred percent hers. its the only way she knows to contact her mom so she just...lives with it.
theres a reason that her official personnel file lists her father as “N/A” and thats all i can say on that :>
Tommy Chow Mein twitter: "Who wants to buy Zone 3?!!!"
Me, whisper-yelling while frantically flipping through my notes: "Is he allowed to do that???"
Something I’ve always wondered about: School in bay city? What’s taught, what history do people learn, etc. How does it compare to how zone-born kids are taught?
I've always imagined that schools in the City are extremely varied depending on where they are. As in, because funding is so focused on the Inner City their schools are hyper-controlled environments - as well as an eight hour school day every day every kid has a 1 on 1 tutor who monitors their skills and attitudes, adjusting medication appropriately so that the most that any student can give is taken by the corporation. I've explored this in depth with my Fun Ghoul, but students who prove to have little use or resist schooling are often subject to increased surveillance and control and often more experimental methods of creating a useful and compliant citizen.
Schooling in the Outer City and Battery Slums is essentially the middle ground between the Inner and Zones Schooling. There are schools here, but they recieve little funding; these children are not born to the executives and CEOs of the Inner City so they are mostly taught by scripted droids. They learn the same lessons as the Inner City - have the same curriculum, but they simply have it spoken at them rather than being injected with the knowledge and made to remember it. The careless attitude of the City towards the schooling of these areas means that the lasting lessons are learned at home, not in school - the Battery City Slums have many hidden connections out into the Zones, and so the survival skills and practical knowledge of the Killjoys leaks into this community more than any other.
Generally, the City schools only teach things deemed "inoffensive" - the City's goal of a docile and submissive populous relies on nothing provokative being available to the masses. History is barely taught past looking at the fear of the Helium Wars next to the serenity of a Better Living success. Thhey do not teach about anything before this - memories are dangerous, and only the known and controlled is useful to the Company. All children are taught to read, essential for efficient working and learning rules and such, but literature is heavily reviewed and censored to ensure that only the roles the Company wants represented exist. Practical skills are discouraged, reliance on the City for all aspects of living far prefered. Only subjects that will benefit those working for the Company really invested in.
In the Zones, children learn in a radically different way. There are no real schools in the traditional sense - a few Runners have tried to set up makeshift schools in the past but it was deemed too dangerous to have regular meetings in the same place; too easy to track. A large proportion of zone-born Runners are illiterate to some degree, especially the younger ones as more and more books from before the Helium Wars are lost over time. Actually living in the Zones is the best education zone-born Joys get - learning to make a meal from the bare minimum, being able to make yourself properly unnoticeable and slip out of a firefight when you know you arent gonna win etc. In addition to this the radio is hailed as education for most killjoys, the words and experience of the older Joys guide them with all the real knowledge they need to live their lives in the Zones.
i really like the idea of friendship bracelets being, like, a Thing in the zones. wearing one for each of your friends/family/partner(s)/crew, done of course in their colors, being a common practice. a sort of way to keep them close to you and by your side at all times. bracelets for the dead worn on the left arm, and those representing the living on the right. since superstitions run amok out in the desert, when a bracelet breaks or falls off, its seen as an ill omen for the ‘joy it represents.
