Em can see that this isn’t his favorite topic, and she tries hard to keep the anger out of her voice. “They don’t understand. Without the water, without swimming… I’m not a person.” While she manages to keep the anger at bay, there’s a raw, desperate note to her voice she can’t manage to stifle.

Wes tried to empathize with her, but the fact of the matter is that he had never stuck with any one thing long enough to have the same passion about it that she did with swimming. Instead, he switches gears. “What can I do to help you?”

“I don’t,” he answers, wishing he could offer Wes something better. It was obvious that the guilt was eating him alive as Drew gave him his full attention, but there was nothing to do but tell him the truth. “I don’t even know if they’ll be able to bring her. She’s pretty dead set on this course of action.”

Wes nods, trying to ignore the tears that were springing to his eyes. In a moment of jealousy, he had ruined his best friend’s life. It wasn’t something he would ever be able to live down, and Kali was going to pay for his mistake for the rest of her life. “I’m a piece of shit,” he whispers.

“They won’t tell me an exact time frame, but they also said I have to be monitored when I do. Like I’m some kid.”

He rubs his face before responding, trying to give himself time to formulate a response. “I don’t think they’re trying to treat you like a kid, babe. I think they’re worried about you. I know I was.”

Drew can’t help it - he barks out a short laugh, before sobering slightly. “Sorry. She packs a wicked punch. Kinda makes you look all rugged, though.”

“I’m glad my pain is humorous to you,” he grumbles. He pauses for a moment before asking the question that had been on his mind for weeks. “Do you know when they’re going to bring her home?” The guilt he felt at putting Kali into her current situation was overwhelming at this point. He needed good news.

“I’m surprised you dared to get within a ten-mile radius of us. Don’t the girls all still want to maim you?”

Wes scoffed, pointing to his nose. “Alex broke my fuckin’ nose. I think I did my time.”

“If they don’t let me in the pool soon, I’m gonna lose my mind.”

“Wouldn’t want that, love.”

[Wes scoffs.] They’re not going to keep Kali down for long. Your girl might be some kind of warrior, Mel might be an FBI agent, and the other girls we hang out with might be master manipulators but nobody- nobody- is more of a fighter than Kali Saxton.

I guess I deserved that. [He sighs.] I wish I could fix it for her. And for him, I guess.

[Drew sighs.] Well, it’s done now. There’s nothing to take back. But you can help make it better.

[Tommy scoffs, running a hand over his hair.] Of course I understand that not all of it is your fault. What I’m saying is that we had enough shit to deal with, shit that was actually avoidable, and now we get to deal with this Kali mess because you were having a hissy fit.

I know I messed up, okay? I get it. But I can’t take it back now. They already arrested them.

[Instead of being stern, he reaches out and places his hand over Wes’.] Why? Why’d you do it?

She told me some things I didn’t want to hear, and I retaliated. And I know, the punishment didn’t match the crime and I know that it hurt a lot of people. I didn’t mean for that. I wished I could take it back the moment that I did it.
