As you can see on the picture, this is my name--Runzhe Hou which should be called Hou Runzhe in Chinese. Hou is my family name which was a high noble rank in ancient China. Runzhe is my last name that was made by my father and my grandpa. After I was born, my grandpa wanted to call me Shaozhe because Shao is the character I should have, according to my family's genealogy book. Meanwhile, Zhe seems like that two scholars are talking so that my grandpa really like this character. He wanted me to inherit my family's traditional name and become a scholar. However, my father thought Shaozhe is completely a boyish name and out of date so that he asked my grandpa to use Run instead of Shao. My grandpa finally accepted because I was born in the leap month of Chinese lunar calendar and the leap month was pronounced "run" in Chinese. Of course, Runzhe sounds better than Shaozhe for a girl.
When I was in my primary school, my friends and my teacher always cannot pronounce my name correctly. That's acceptable for me because my last name and first name are both rarely used in daily life. Now, that situation happens again in my university life. My name is truly hard to pronounce for foreign people. My professors call me "runs", "wrong zee", "ruzz"...It's really funny for me, hahaha. Though my name always gives me some confusion, I still love my name because it was filled with my families' love. For my children, I still want to let my grandpa name them because he must be very happy to do that; I do hope he can live longer to see his great-grandchildren.
