i havent properly drawn this guy in like two months wtf
Right so, I've always been hearing this Look To Windward verse in the same structure as Vessel sings it, like:
Now I know why I woke up here on the shoreline
Coughing up blood in the twilight
Everything looks the same
HOWEVER! I was just listening to it and singing along, and had a bit of lightbulb moment, because the sentences are obviously one continuous line of thought BUT the breaks aren't sang as they are "written". Because really, this is what makes the most sense:
Now I know why I woke up here on the shoreline coughing up blood
In the twilight everything looks the same
As in, he's not "coughing up blood in the twilight" but he's "on the shoreline [where he woke up] coughing up blood" and then "In the twilight everything looks the same". You could read that as an after though, or a an extra information, as:
Now I know why I woke up here on the shoreline coughing up blood - in the twilight everything looks the same.
Which of course, that last sentence is yet another addition to all of his previous Things Are Different Under Different Lights™ (stained glass, sunset/sunrise, night/day) lyrics. We love a common theme.
HOWEVER ☝️☝️ VERY COOL DETAIL I SIMPLY DIDN'T CATCH UNTIL NOW ☝️☝️
Honey Sweetie Pie is stranded on some beach at twilight (which could be either dusk or dawn - it's the transitional period between day and night) coughing blood. Except, not really.
Because why would he cough blood?? Do you perhaps have tuberculosis?? Here's the fun part (given how relevant the Odyssey is) remember Odysseus dark-wine sea? Aka blood coloured?
Riddle me this: what colour is the ocean during an intense sunset (aka twilight)? Or even perhaps during an odd phenomenon, like say an eclipse 👀, where the sun has a specific type of light? It sure ain't blue!
"In the twilight everything looks the same" = dearest darling angel is obviously coughing water, given he's waking up in a beach (possibly drowned like in/after Atlantic? Which is the exact opposite of Infinite Baths' "drift with me" line). But since it's during twilight, water looks like blood. Everything looks like blood.
Which is such a cool poetic way of describing that weird foggy state of mind when you're Going Through It™ and everything looks and feels so bleak and miserable, even if it's not the truth. And of course, the whole "water is a metaphor" thing Vessel number Uno has going on since pretty much the early days.
I don't know if I'm the last person on Earth to catch that, but I found it cool nonetheless.
