also adding this to a reblog since you mentioned a desire to broaden our understanding of what Sleep is:

From a mechanical function within the genres that Vessel is playing around with — which are primarily sci fi and cosmic horror — entities such as gods are nebulous. Their motivations are at times incomprehensible and they defy the laws of reality that we've come to know. They become settings unto themselves and thus I associate them with forces more akin to black holes: they exist but are not in and of themselves individuals.

I personally don't see Sleep as a stand in for a toxic partner and never did; I see it as a framework for a tortured inner psyche to process personal hardships and traumas. Within Sleep is the infinite potential of the subconscious mind and an opportunity to reflect and connect on experiences that might otherwise isolate. When pain robs of us understanding through direct language, it allows us to connect through art and abstraction.

Again, this is entirely a personal interpretation and I don't dismiss anyone who sees Sleep simply as a stand in for a traumatic relationship/partner. I'm just a nerd who's deeply into cosmic horror and find the functional role of eldritch beings far more interesting when viewed as an open ended question with no easy answer. I also find any lore potential within Sleep Token to be infinitely more enticing when shifting away from the dynamic of "who is victim and who is perpetrator" and more about what choices Vessel makes with the power he's been given. It allows more room for culpability and agency when discussing the music as well as the story, if one exists.
