Like there’s anywhere else in the WHOLE WIDE WORLD she would rather be, fist deep in a bowl of popcorn, watching a documentary about river otters. Well… yes, probably — she’d like to be there with the otters, splashing about with them, studying them, befriending them, but she can’t. She’s here, back in that house she promised she’d never return to, sitting on that godawful couch, pretending like her world hadn’t come CRASHING down just weeks before. “You’re like, five — you can’t stay here alone.” Another handful of popcorn is shoved into her mouth as she glances over at her sister, hesitating before responding. “I’m glad to be with you again.”
" i'll be 18 in the summer. "
there are moments in every person's life where they doubt life. is there a fairy who comes in the dead of night to correct bad dreams? (she still thinks so.) why couldn't the fairy wake her from the nightmare? (there was a reason for her absence.) would the shout in the dark ever find a way to peace? (yes. they wouldn't yell again.) would her sister ever come back to her? (not willingly. at least, that's what it felt like. ) AMSER had learned & grown & questioned & was still doing so. that was the trouble with growing up, you begin to interrogate the very lies you are built upon, crush the very foundation that THEY would tell you so you'd sleep soundly, without without the worry, & shatter expections for the world, all for the need to know what it's like.
once, her sister excitedly told her about the world and it's wonders. she had brought her back treasures from far off mountains, telling of an ancient people and how they still lived. & then she left again.
the young girl had woken up to find a friend gone. she had waited for a return, a happy embrace - but it would never come. the dreamed moment DID happen, but all too late. there was one half-hearted hug.
amser finally knew why you shouldn’t truly know your heroes. she had been had thinking about that saying all afternoon.
“ but what about backpacking through italy? you’ll miss it. “
