ISSN 2371-0667Volume 2 Issue 2Written: January 5, 2017Published: September 25, 2017MarkusBy Kenneth ShumakerEpisode 029, ‘Horse’MarkusWe travel through Kenneth Shumaker’s medieval fantasy realm of Quantos, in the Dominnion of Kannoral’s royal city of Mount Oryn, with our hero, Apprentice Dragoman Markus. Beginning in the Autumn of Bear, during the reign of King Dolan IV, Apprentice Dragoman Markus is rescued from a life as a destitute rogue to learn dragoman work. But, soon, the attractive sixteen-year-old Jalnoric human male youth, with a strong budding personality, great wisdom, and intelligence, finds more good fortune as a Seal Watcher. Experience Markus as he builds a better life while suffering through adventures.Previously in Markus episode 028, ‘Hounds’:Markus helps Enna become an armourer apprentice with Armourer Lynda of the suspect Ranken Armourer’s Factory, which is from Bloodgrue’s past. This is followed by a day of work, ending up with the trio being adopted by a golden hound. We continue now in Markus episode 029, ‘Horse’,Winter 11 BearIn her excitement, Enna travels to Ranken Armourer Factory for apprenticeship work with Armourer Lynda early, while Gerra sullenly walks to the Tempest to her job.Though Markus was back to work officially as of yesterday, as a Blood Dragoman and as an apprentice Watcher, today he’s in Teptun Square and Market, near the fountain where the outters gather. His new golden hound, Rex, is with Markus, near his heels.Mixing with the outters, Markus addresses a Jalmal who seems to be seeking something, as the outter is asking stall owners questions but is looking frustrated with their answers.Approaching him, Markus says, “Gods-grace and good fate master. I’m Dragoman Markus. May I be of service?”The outter stops and watches Markus a moment, and then says, “My party and I are looking for a place in Velan district’s southern wards. We need to pick up two new mining wagons. Can you get us into southern Velan?”Hesitating with nervous indecision, Markus considers this. ‘This would be a feather in my cap if I were to successfully complete. I’d learn a new area, and it will pay well. I’ll quote them for four days.’ Quickly, Markus calculates the sums at Bloodgrue’s rates for four days, and he says to the outter, “I’ll take your party for eight Dyns, plus additional costs for food and lodging. Who do I have the privilege of escorting?”Looking around, frustrated, the outter asks, “Do you have a horse? Or do you even know how to ride, Markus?”Looking down at the ground, then at Rex, Markus fidgets as he considers this. He’s never been on a horse before; he has to be truthful. “No, Master. I don’t have a horse nor have I been on a horse. But I’m willing to learn to ride.”The man sighs and extends his arm. “I’ll take you on as an escort for seven Dyns, Markus. I’m Tryz. My party is at a stable to the south of here. We’ll need rooms tonight, and then we can travel in the morning.”Markus clasps arms with Tryz, saying, “I know of a stable and can get you rooms that’ll be closer to our start for the journey.”Tryz draws back, saying, “Really? Then let’s get started.”The two of them walk to a stable on Fifth Street South Road, meeting Tryz’ party of coal freighters. With confidence, Tryz introduces Markus to the other members of the freighter’s party. Then, with the freighters’ aid, Markus learns to mount and ride a horse in short order.Handing Markus seven small silver coin, Tryz pays for Markus’ services for four days. With six horses, five people, and a golden hound, they travel to the Tempest where Markus leaves Tryz and his party booked for the night. Winter 12 BearIn the morning, Gerra and Markus walk to the Tempest together in silence. This morning, Gerra was angry when Markus told her that he will be away for several days, possibly eight or more. Now, Gerra refuses to talk to Markus. Arriving at the Tempest, Gerra storms off to begin work, without even a good-bye to Markus. She refuses to even look at him.Sitting at the Blood table, Markus watches as the Tempest comes to life with staff and patrons. Enna is seated next to him, and Markus watches as Tryz, and his crew come downstairs, ready for the day. They all begin to eat.Markus asks Lana to fill one of his waterskins with juice, paying her a Flair for the rare fluid. Then, with a second skin filled with water, Markus joins up with Tryz and his team. Rex walks beside Markus, staying close.Eager to be moving early, standing at their table, Markus addresses Tryz. “Shall we be on our journey as soon as you’re finished eating? I’ll see about getting myself a horse.”Looking up from his steaming hot morning meal, Tryz answers, “Yes, in half-an-hour.”Saluting them half-heartedly, Markus wanders over to Sennet, saying eagerly, “Master Sennet, may I borrow a horse for a few days? I’ll pay you a Dyns per six-day.”Looking at Markus, Sennet snorts, “If you think you can rent a horse for that price, you’re dreaming. A Flair per six-day and that gets you the saddle and tack.”Slumping and shrugging, Markus hums a bit and then says, “I can’t really afford that, say five Dyns per six-day?”Extending his arm, Sennet says, “For that price, you can have the eight-year-old bay mare in stall seven with the saddle that’s in her stall.”Brightening, Markus stands straight. “Thank you, Master Sennet. I’ll go groom and saddle her now.” Rushing out of the inn, Markus heads to the stable. With the aid of the stable boy, he quickly learns the proper saddling and tack of a horse along with the care and feeding of her. Also, learning that the horse’s name is Traelin. As he finishes, Tryz and friends come out to saddle their horses.Markus returns inside for his gear. Nervously, he fidgets as he cautiously approaches Gerra, saying, “Look, I’m going away for a few days of work. We need the coins, and I need the experience along with the gained reputation. It’s good all the way around, except for my being away from you.” He offers to hug Gerra. She stands with arms at her side watching Markus, tears in her eyes, saying, “I don’t want to be in the house alone.”Seeing Gerra’s dilemma, Markus offers, “You will be okay; Enna will be with you. And, maybe if you ask him nicely, Rex will stay with you.”Gerra, scoffing, looks down at the golden hound. “How will he understand? He’s a hound.”Laughing, Markus says, “Watch.” Turning to Rex, Markus points at Gerra and says, “Rex, stay.”Whining slightly, Rex slinks over to stand with Gerra.Stunned, Gerra just stares at the hound. Then, she smiles and kneels, stroking the dog's back and neck while cooing.Rex turns to look up at her and licks her face. He vigorously wags his tail.Moving quickly, Gerra shrugs and hugs Markus, kissing his mouth with passion. Stepping back, she says, “I feel a little safer.” Stepping over to the group, Sennet offers, “You can use Markus’ old room when he’s away; I won’t rent it out.”Screeching, Gerra springs at Sennet, squeezing him in an embrace.Sennet winks at Markus, who returns the wink while smiling and nodding.Quickly returning to the stableyard, Markus mounts his horse, and with Tryz and his team, they head out under the guidance of Markus, travelling eastward towards the Velan, District Four. They cover a great distance, travelling over Willow Ford into Velan District, arriving at Nobleman’s Rest at 428 Berret Street at an hour after gods-set.Winter 13 BearIt’s raining heavily when Markus gets the troop organised and out onto the road after gods-rise. Arriving at Chesiter’s Cartwright at 1432 Dorean Avenue, it had only just stopped raining an hour ago, which had greatly slowed their travel day.Markus turns to leave, but Tryz grabs his arm, asking, “Tell me, can you get us to Littleton?”Stepping back, Markus ponders this. He knows Littleton is southwest in the hills, on the western edge of Mount Oryn. It would be a matter of locating the right roads, streets, and avenues to get the troop there with their two new wagons. Trying to recall the images of the various maps, which Markus had seen from Sennet, Markus comes up with a plan he hopes is right. He answers Tryz. “I’ll do it for three Dyns per day plus expenses.Shaking his head, Tryz says, “No. Twenty-five dusters a day.”Starting to walk away, Markus utters, “Not less than twenty-eight.”Grumbling, Tryz extends his arm, “Twenty-eight it is.”Turning back, Markus clasps arms with Tryz, agreeing to guide the freighters home.Winter 20 BearTwo hours after gods-set, Tryz and Markus lead the way into the coal yard. Markus looks at the dreary blackness of the coal and dust.Tryz leads the group to the stock office and dismounts.Markus, feeling his saddle-sores, also dismounts.Opening his pouch, Tryz pays Markus for the seven days, handing Markus, 1.96 coin, but not adding a tip of any kind. Tryz points to a bunkhouse saying, “You can bunk down in there and get meals tonight and in the morning. Thank you, Markus.”Saluting, Markus takes his horse, Traelin, to the barn, and then he turns in for the night. Winter 27 BearAs Markus is riding along Fifth Street Road South, a voice calls from the roadside. “Master? Coins for a man down on his luck and needing to feed his family?”Turning to look to see who is speaking, Markus spots a dishevelled old Jalmal, holding out his hand, sitting on the side of Fifth Street South Road. Marcus stops and dismounts, and then digs into his coin pouch for a couple dusters to hand the man who is now standing. Grovelling and fussing, running his hands over Markus in appreciation, the man thanks him.Markus grabs the thief’s hand as he tries opening Markus’ Blood pouch. The man grimaces as Markus says, “Did you really think I wouldn’t notice you trying to filch through my pouches?”Trying to pull his hand away, the man snarls, “No, Master, I was doing no such thing.”Markus shakes the man’s hand as he squeezes it. Coins drop out of his hand.Sarcastically, Markus says, “So you weren’t picking my pouches? You didn’t have coins in your hand before? If I check my coin pouch, I’m betting it’s short, say, about the amount that was in your hand.”Pulling away even harder, the man, using his other hand, pulls out a club that had been concealed in the folds of his rags of clothing. He utters, “You best move on, boy, and leave me all your coins.”Stepping towards the man, Markus snarls, “What is your name, thief?”Holding his chin high, the man says, “When you come this way, young rogue, you owe Andolf of Pandora a tithe of a Dyns each crossing.”Drawing his scimitar, Markus utters, “I think not; my master is the Blood of First Rank, Bloodgrue of Pandora. We don’t pay crossing tithes.”Going so pale you couldn’t bleach him any whiter, Andolf lowers his club submissively, saying, “Bloodgrue is your Master?”Nodding enthusiastically, Markus answers, “I am Bloodgrue’s apprentice, and you owe me restitution for your error.”Grovelling again, Andolf says, “I’m so sorry, Master. I didn’t know. You weren’t showing your markings. I apologise. My bad.” He looks at the ground in fear, shaking violently.Seeing this, Markus sees an opportunity to make some coins for himself. “Andolf, your fine is five Flairs. Don’t repeat your mistake.”Kneeling on one knee, Andolf whines, “Who am I addressing, Master?”Looking down upon the grovelling rogue-beggar, Markus answers, “I am Dragoman Markus. Pay your fine now.”Shaking his head slow and stiff, Andolf replies, “I don’t have five Flairs, Master Markus.”Raising his scimitar, Markus demands, “How much do you have?’Flinching involuntarily, Andolf replies, “Two Flairs.”Growling, Markus utters, “Not enough, I want all of your coins and all of your weapons.”Grunting, Andolf leaps to his feet in an attack on Markus, who was standing less than six feet away.In a rapid flurry, Markus responds to the attack, drawing first blood and backing away. They size each other up in a series of feints back and forth, with Markus drawing Andolf’s blood again. Then, going in for a kill, Markus misjudges, twisting his scimitar in the folds of Andolf’s clothing rags, snapping the blade of his scimitar. Quickly dropping his broken blade, he drops into his Grenar martial attack with the use of his bare hands. They circle each other and Andolf seeks out Markus’ weaknesses, striking with his club. But Markus smoothly strikes Andolf’s arm with a precise strike, shattering both bones in Andolf’s lower arm, stunning the rogue-beggar and causing him to drop his club.Picking up the club and his coins that Andolf had dropped, Markus then strips a knife and coin pouch from Andolf as he’s cradling his shattered arm, still in shock with his eyes watering, murmuring nonsense to no one in particular.Placing the loot in his saddlebags, Markus debates riding off, then wonders what he can do for Andolf’s broken arm. They haven’t seen anyone pass by the entire time they’ve been in this conflict together. Markus tethers the horse to a rail of the fence and then approaches Andolf, saying, “Is there a healer nearby that you want to go to?”Shaking his head strongly, the itinerant jalmal replies, “I can’t afford one.”Sighing, Markus says, “So, then you can’t afford a priest either. And because you are so aggressive, you’re not likely to have any friends?”Again, a negative shake of his head.Markus helps him sit, and then he sits beside him, saying, “So, to your home it is. That arm’s not likely to heal well without attention.” Pointing to the shattered arm. “I don’t have the skills to set it.”Glaring at Markus, Andolf snarls. “To the Seven Hells with you … bastard.”Smiling, Markus glares back, and then says, “All you had to do was pay the fine for abusing your situation.”Still glaring, the rogue-beggar snarls, and then says, “Like I said, you go to the Seven Hells.” Tears are in his eyes from the pain, as he sits cradling his shattered arm. They sit for over an hour, and Andolf refuses to move; no one passes them by. So, Markus utters, “Let me escort you safely home.”In so much pain and with the time getting late – half-an-hour past gods-set – Andolf replies, “Ok.”Rising, Markus carefully aids Andolf to his feet and then untethers his horse. Leading the horse and aiding Andolf, Markus asks, “Where is home?”Resigned to his new fate, Andolf wearily responds through teeth gritting with pain, “Number six, Trouft House, at 3617 Caraway Avenue.”Slowly the two travel south to Caraway Avenue. Then, they turn east to travel toward Trouft House, where Markus opens the door for Andolf into his apartment, saying, “I’m leaving you here on your own, Andolf. Good luck, you’re going to need it without a healer.”Andolf spits at Markus as the dragoman closes the door.Continuing east to Willow Road, as it will be a shorter route home, Markus finishes his journey home. At an hour after midnight, he quietly enters, arriving home to a sleeping household. Rex rises to greet him from his new mat a few feet from the door.Markus pets and scratches Rex, and then Markus wanders up to his room and prepares for bed, joining the sleeping Gerra.Winter 28 BearWaking only a few hours later and now unable to sleep, Markus readies for another day without waking anyone. Then, he travels to the Tempest where he stables Traelin and does his old morning chores, preparing the Tempest tavern and kitchen for the new day.Finished, two hours before gods-rise, Markus walks up to the secret room to scribe for an hour. Eventually, at about an hour before gods-rise, he wanders down to the tavern to greet Gerra and Lana.Hugging Gerra, he kisses her, though she is restrained in her affection. Markus asks, “Are you still angry with me for going away with clients?”Pulling sharply away, huffing, Gerra looks at the floor with a downturn mouth. She responds, “It makes me upset that you leave me alone.”Nodding in reply, Markus then says, “I do understand, actually. I remember when my pappa would leave for the barge work; I felt it, too. And I remember how angry and lost I felt when I heard that he had drowned. But I’m not going to drown or die when I leave. I simply escort folks to their destinations or deliver packages to locations set by clients. It is not any more dangerous than walking the streets.”Punching Markus hard in the chest, fuming, Gerra pouts. “I know how dangerous the streets are for you. Remember? I’ve seen the results. You can’t lie to me; I know you’ll end up dead just walking the streets one day if you’re not careful.”Rubbing the painful bruised punch, realising how strong Gerra is and thinking that she’d make a good warrior, Markus responds, “Do you know what I truly do?”Shaking her head, Gerra responds, “I know you work for Bloodgrue and I know who he really is – The Bloodgrue – a fixer for guilds, not just a dragoman. I don’t know what he or you really do, nor do I truly want to know, Markus.”With tears streaming down her face, she suddenly wraps Markus in a bear hug of an embrace, and she whispers, “Why didn’t you stay with me this morning, my sweet?”Having dreaded this question, knowing it would come, Markus dredged for an answer as he rode to the Tempest this morning. But he couldn’t come up with a good answer. He tells Gerra the truth, “I needed to study alone for a couple of hours on something; it’s a project I’ll never be able to share with anyone. I’m sorry. It is a project that may take over five-hundred hours, over the next few years, and I’ll never be able to confide in anyone, not on who it’s for, or with, or what it is. For if I do, I forfeit my life – by order of the client.”Breaking into an even louder sobbing, Gerra cries for several minutes before calming, while Markus holds her, stroking her back and hair, softly humming to her a song he heard in his younger years. Marcus continues to try calming his life-companion until Gerra finally settles down and asks, “Will you ever be fully mine? Will we ever truly be life-companions?”Thinking about these questions, Markus passionately kisses Gerra, and then says, “We are life-companions in all senses, my love. I am yours as much as I can ever be anyone’s ever. Please, no matter, whatever happens, transpires, or whatever anyone says, never doubt that. And yes, people will try to convince you otherwise, to hurt us. But my love is always yours, as long as we shall live, just as our vows said.”Smiling now, Gerra pulls Markus close, and she fervently kisses her young life-companion before releasing him and asking, “Will you be home tonight?”Grinning, Markus answers, “We’ll be trying to make babies tonight, that’s what you and I’ll be doing.”They both turn bright red, as Lana, who is walking by, says, “That’s nice, children, now Gerra you have customers waiting for service before you service your life-companion. Get to work!”With another less passionate but still tender kiss, the two part and Markus wanders over to Jerred and Mark’s table, where Lana has already served the two their morning meal. Markus asks, “May I join you two after I speak with Master Sennet?”Mark nods, and Jerred shifts over on the bench and moves his place-setting over.Saluting the two, Markus replies, “Thank you.” He then marches to the inn’s front counter to talk with the innkeeper, Master Seal Watcher Sennet. He says, “Master Sennet, may we talk in the fuel room?”The older, half-century-plus Jalmal, motions for Markus to follow him. They walk to the cellar and enter the fuel room. Markus closes the door of the nearly soundproof room.Markus turns to Sennet, nearly breaking down in sadness, his face is red with grief, tears building, he utters, “Master, I was drawn into violence with an aggressive rogue beggar who assaulted me with a club. I drew his blood with my scimitar. I might have slain him, except that in my furry I broke my weapon in his rags of clothing. But when he continued to attack, I resorted to the training in my arts of Grenar to attack back in aggression, not defence. I shattered both bones of the forearm of his weapon arm. He lives, but he will never use his hand again, as he was unable to afford a healer or a priest, and I refused to pay for them because of the altercation leading up to the attack. I need to learn the healing arts. Will you teach me your skills?”Caught off guard by Markus breaking down so suddenly into grief, Sennet decides to comfort him. Sennet takes the sixteen-year-old apprentice in his arms as a father would, while Markus is spewing out his concern. Sennet answers, “Lessons aren’t cheap; they’re five Flairs a season. You think you can afford that?”Comforted greatly by Sennet’s fatherly embrace, Markus hesitates. Then, pulling away, Markus wipes his face and says to his mentor and master, “I’ll find the coin if you teach me. I can pay for the rest of this season now.”Patting Markus’ shoulder, Sennet answers, “This season is still five Flairs, as you need supplies to set up for studies and you need to start today.”Quickly opening his Blood pouch, Markus digs five Flairs out and hands them to the Master.Looking into Markus’ pouch as he takes out the five gold coins, Sennet says, “I recommend you also take lessons with Lana and Jerred to get an all-around perspective, which you won’t get studying with just one of us.”Extending his arm, Markus answers, “Will do, Master.”Having clasped arms, together, the two leave the fuel room, returning to the tavern where Markus sits beside Jerred. Specifically, waving Lana over, Markus waits for her. He also addresses Jerred, “How much would you want to teach me your knowledge in healing?”As Lana steps up to the table, Jerred replies, “Ten Flairs for all the knowledge you can learn about healing that I can teach you.”Again, extending his arm while grinning, Markus says, “Agreed, where will we work?”Holding her hand in front of her, Lana says, “Sennet has a healing room in the cellar that you can use. I use the room sometimes to practice.”Eager, Jerred responds, “I use the room to practice as well. If Sennet’s good with everything, it’s done.”Turning to Lana, Markus asks, “I’d like to take lessons from you as well, how much do you charge?”Shrugging while observing Markus, Lana replies, “Same as Jerred, ten Flairs.”Mopping behind Lana with downturned lips, Gerra says, “I’d like to learn as well, but we can’t afford it.”Taking his Blood pouch off of his belt, Markus dumps the contents onto the table. With over fifty Flairs, Markus counts two piles of twenty, while the wide-eyed observers watch. He pushes one pile to Jerred and one pile to Lana saying, “So that includes healing lessons from both of you, for Gerra and me. I am open for Dragoman and Watcher services, to any of you.” He displays his finger tattoos for all to see.Jerred and Mark both clap Markus’ back, as Lana smiles and Gerra oohs, suddenly wide-eyed, as if she has a new understanding. Winking at Gerra, Markus counts the remaining eight gold coins and places them into his Blood pouch, and then says, “Let’s see how much I earned on my recent trip out.”Dumping his public coin pouch contents onto the table and putting everything back in except the coins, Markus counts the content, including the two new Flairs. He announces, “I earned 3.03 coins this trip, for an eighteen days’ journey. It cost me 0.71 coin for rent on the horse.” For which he separates seven Dyns and a duster. “And I spent several dusters on room and board for my return from Littleton.”Markus notices the shocked response from all four gathered listeners.Mark says what everyone else seems to be thinking, “You were at Littleton?Laughing conspiratorially, Markus answers, “Yes, my clients wanted to go into Velan, and then down over to Littleton. I earned more than many middle-middle-class earns in thirty days and what lower-middle-class earn in a full season. Not bad hum?”Again, a round of congratulations from all four gathered, as Markus pulls free three Dyns from the pile of coins. Handing the coins to Lana, he says, “Put that in my box for Bloodgrue’s fees.”Nodding, Lana takes the coins and leaves the table.Gerra eyes Markus with a new appreciation.Markus has earned as much as she earns in over two seasons, even with tips, working as a barmaid.Spending an hour with Jerred and Mark talking local history, Markus arranges a schedule of lesson times with Jerred and Lana for him and Gerra. Then, walking over to Sennet, he says, “I’m ready for today’s lesson. Do we use your healing room?”Sennet nods and then gestures for Lana to take over. The two males head to the cellar to work on lessons, and they arrange further scheduled times.By, Kenneth Shumaker. To be continued in the next Markus episode 030, ‘Weather’,Life can be rough, especially when the weather is involved. Markus believes that he has everything set with the lessons for himself and Gerra. He has Enna now working well in her armourer apprenticeship, and she has steady jobs as a dragoman. He can now concentrate on earning coins himself, again.©2017 by Kenneth Shumaker with Inevitable Unicorn Presswww.inupress.ca [email protected] All Rights Reserved.
