Julia Child’s Day
Yesterday was Julia Child’s Day at Smith. The famous chef, Julia Child is a Smith alum. Every year in November, the dining halls serve amazing meals based on her recipes. Julia Child’s day is one of my favorite traditions at Smith. This year, the menu item I was the most excited about was the chocolate hazelnut filled croissants and they most definitely lived up to my expectations!
I'm applying ED to smith and my school didn't offer AP or honor classes but I always took the most challenging courses they could offer me and I was wondering if you think this would hurt my chances of getting in?
Smith is looking to see that you took challengeing courses at your school. The admissions office is able to see the courses the your high school offers so if you are challenging yourself and studying the things that you care about that is wonderful! Ruth ‘19
Parent’s Weekend
Last weekend was Parents Weekend at Smith. My family lives in Michigan so they were not able to make the trip out, but my roommate’s family came to visit over the weekend.
Smith has so many cool events that happen during Parent’s Weekend ranging from concerts to Fall Fest with apple cider, pumpkins, and doughnuts.
Parent’s Weekend is also a great time to go explore downtown Northampton! While my roommate's family was visiting we all went downtown for a yummy dinner and then stopped at one of my favorite places, Herrell’s, for ice cream!

Studying Abroad in New Zealand
Last year at this time I was on the opposite side of the world, studying abroad in New Zealand at the University of Auckland. All of the rainy weather this week has really made me feel like I’m back there and has made me reflect on what a wonderful experience it was.
Studying abroad while at Smith was one of the most incredible things I have ever done. I learned so much from the experience and met such amazing people. I chose to study at the University of Auckland, which is an approved study abroad program at Smith. As an Environmental Science and Policy major, New Zealand’s breathtaking landscapes and groundbreaking Environmental protection policies were my main motivations when deciding where to study abroad.
I wanted to study at the University of Auckland because it was a city campus and really close to so many amazing sights, museums, and landmarks. Smith also has an approved study abroad program in New Zealand’s South Island at the University of Canterbury. During my school breaks, I was able to explore more of the country, traveling around the north island and going on a road trip around the South Island with friends that I met while in New Zealand.
Smith’s study abroad office is such a great resource and can help you find the perfect study abroad experience for you! If you are interested in studying abroad, you should head to the Study Abroad Office as soon as possible to start exploring all the amazing places you could go.
In the meantime, enjoy some of my favorite pictures of the Auckland Harbor and the most northern point of New Zealand, where the Pacific Ocean meets the Tasman Sea.
My Room at Smith
My first three years at Smith I lived in Lamont House, and loved every minute of it! This year, I am living in the Friedman Apartments on campus with three of my closest friends. The apartments are only for seniors and are assigned through a lottery, similar to the room draw process in each of the houses.
Living in the Friedman apartments means that you cook your own food and clean your own space. The apartments are beautiful and I am loving living here so far. Here’s a peek at my room and a great meal I made with my roommates a few weeks ago

Fall Break Trip
This weekend was Smith’s Fall Break. For the past three years, I chose to stay at Smith and spend time with friends on campus. This year for the break I went to upstate New York with my apartment-mates and hiked in The Catskills. It was great to see all of the leaves changing color and have a much-needed chance to spend some relaxing time with friends!

Exploring the Pioneer Valley
Since this is my senior year, my friends and I have made a commitment to go on at least one adventure each weekend. These adventures usually involve exploring new or favorite places around the Pioneer Valley. This weekend was beautiful weather so my roommates and I decided to hike up the nearby Mount Sugarloaf and then stop at the Whately Diner (one of my favorite places for milkshakes) on our way back to campus. It was such a peaceful and fun way to spend a beautiful fall afternoon in western Massachusettes.

There are so many great hiking trails and things to do outdoors around Smith. If you aren’t up for leaving campus, there are great walking trails around Paradise Pond and along the Mill River. Northampton also has great bike paths that are near Smith and are beautiful in the fall!
how time consuming is WOZQ? I want to participate but i don't know if i have the time! thank you!
Hi! I highly recommend joining WOZQ. It’s such a great org. and it’s so fun to have a show and play music you love for an hour or two each week. In general, I would say that, as a club, WOZQ is not that time-consuming. At a minimum, it is about a 2-3 hour time commitment per week including your show. Show slots are 2 hours and then you have to factor in the time it would take you to make a playlist for your weekly shows. There are WOZQ meetings occasionally, but these are only a few times a semester. If you’re interested in having a show you should totally do it! WOZQ is a great low-pressure way to get involved in a club at Smith and meet some wonderful people as well.
