I know it seems incredibly obvious, but Lawrence's obsession with returning to the River seems like a perfectly placed metaphor for chasing a high.
Lawrence is a user of various drugs. One he loves is the "milk" from poppies which is opium. Heroin and opiates are derived from opium. The obsession with reliving the first high from that drug is most notable about heroin and opium highs.
Lawrence through BTD2 is obsessed with the River and wants to return to it. It's canon that he has ruined his ability to "pass on" because of how many times he went back. He is addicted to returning to the River since he accidentally went there for the first time. The River is the one place he feels at peace, in a completely different reality.
I'm really happy Gato is deciding to touch more on Lawrence's drug use and addiction with YKMET. It seems like that was an important symbolism of his character to begin with, but never really got the expansion it deserved. I hope we get to see more of his struggle with addiction and his connection to the River.
