Short fic about Jaylin after they enter a bandit camp and meet the leader (Cinnamon) and they have a discussion about Jaylin's hair.
Relaxation. A distant feeling only experienced in childhood and before the selling of their soul to the Atlas corporation. A foreign lullaby, hummed from a pile of freshly washed cloths and furs. Jaylin sunk into the mass. No weapon at their side ready to fire, no ache in their feet from trekking kilometers in the scorched Pandora sun, and no AI equipment filling the space with endless bickering. This is peace. The word unfamiliar like the Eridians, alien to the chaotic planet. It's rewarding nonetheless. Sweeter than wine, crisper than fresh baked bread. Pure bliss.
After long lengths of running, hiding and fighting day in and day out, their body found no problem in shutting itself down. Dried blood crusted over wounds fresh and stale, with some blood still oozing into their tattered clothes. Their mouth slowly hydrated itself, cracked lips moistened with a smooth tongue. "Please, never let this end," a whisper filled the dimly lit room, and cut off as Jaylin nuzzled into a floral scented bullymong fur blanket. Their back arched and fell as a warm fuzziness slipped over their still form. Sleep, actual sleep, pulled them into a soft quiet.
They lay for a while like that, still and comfortable. No worry of bandits infiltrating their camp or skags tearing at flesh plagued their mind. No anxiety to keep their legs bouncing and their form writhing in sleep. Not even the approaching footsteps brought them out of their lax position. A hot hand on their forehead, moving stray twists out of their eyes, kept them asleep. A deep voice followed, "You come in here, eat our food, sleep in our clean linens, and don't get up when we come home? Who's you, Goldilocks?" Jaylin turned away from the movement when the heat became too much, making the hand pull.
The voice continued after a pause, now coming from a different part of the room, "You're like a stalker, you know. You move in someplace comfortable, make yourself right at home. Act like you live here." Water ran from a faucet behind them, the sound reminded them they hadn't used the bathroom before sleep took them. Jaylin groaned loud enough only for themself to hear. They opened their eyes and met with the leader of the bandit group they stumbled upon with a dripping washrag in their right hand. Rubbing their eyes, Jaylin grumbled a response, "M' not an animal. I'm tired. Leave me alone." They sat still for a couple of moments, starring up at the cieling and breathing softly. The bandit leader, Cinnamon, advanced and placed the warm rag on their face.
A gash situated over their left eyebrow bled into their twists, caking their hair in crimson flakes. The rag loosened up the grit, bloody water running down their face. Cinnamon tutted above them, teeth poking through full lips, "When's the last time you washed these?" Jaylin averted their eyes to a bullymong-fur blanket. They visualized the last time shampoo and conditioner made it onto their scalp. Three weeks ago when they got their hair done. Fresh out the salon, vibrant green restored, passion twists for the summer season, a switch up from the box braids they wore through the winter and spring. The twists were delicate, softer and loose compared to the heavy tight style of the braids, they didn't want to risk frizzing them up so quickly. The twists weren't supposed to be on Pandora either.
Cinnamon listened to their silence and let out a sharp hum, "I knew it." His calloused hands placed the cloth on the floor and smoothed out the twists. His flat finger pads felt along the coarse black coils that transitioned into softer, but tangled neon green strands. Sleeping without a silk pillowcase and a bonnet wrapped tight around their head left their hair a mess. Cinnamon knew that. Cinnamon could tell the time and effort Jaylin took to keep themselves professional and well groomed. They weren't from Pandora, that was a fact.
A tug on the ends of Jaylin's hair had their hands shooting up to grab the bandit leader, "Whoa whacha doin'!?" They sat up and stared back at Cinnamon, ebony eyes searching for the audacity that possessed him to lay hands on them. A deadpan look is all they found. Full lips parted again, "They need to come out. Look at em', the hair's stained. I'll give you a retwist." His voice was soft, like the blankets beneath Jaylin's thighs. That didn't stop them from quivering and stuttering over their words, "…no." Cinnamon cocked their head, "'Scuse me?" Louder, "No. No no no, I paid for this. I paid to get my shit done. You're not taking it out cause it's 'dirty'. It's staying in until I'm ready to take it out." Silence filled the room once more. Instead of dropping it, Cinnamon pried further, "When's that gon be?" A question asked with sincerity felt laced with cyanide. The bandit leader wanted to help. To lend a sword to his newly found ally. Jaylin took the sword by the blade and cried betrayal when they bled.
The question hung in the air unanswered. It hovered over Jaylin's head heavy. A thick fog blocking up their airway. Cinnamon struggled to breathe too. They didn't know each other. Cinnamon was far too friendly and open, treating Jaylin like family. But was that a bad thing? Was it terrible to be welcomed by someone you didn't know when all you're life you've been pushed away by blood ties. By peers you've shared thoughts and ideas and tears with over bad coffee. Was a real connection that foreign that you'd snuff it out in favor of protecting an already shattered heart.
"When I'm ready." Jaylin hugged their ankles to the back of their thighs. Ready could be a couple minutes from now. Hours. Days. Until they got back to Promethea. When they quit their job at Atlas. Cinnamon threw the washrag over the faucet and swiped a hand over his neck, "Holler when you decide when that is." Jaylin caught their bottom lip between their teeth as Cinnamon left. Whenever that will be.

The kitchen window frames Buddleja davidii, summer lilac, my childhood favorite flower. The two bushes bloom July through August every year; I've known them for the past twelve. Highlight of the summer, an encore after our white lilacs die. An old friend to share a drink with on a hot summer night.
I didn't smell them this year.
In middle school I would sniff them when I played outside. Evening after evening, music blasting in my ears as my nostrils filled with the sweet scent of tiny flowers. A small joy with the convenience of being in my yard. I don't go outside much in summer now.
I drink my water in a mug I dislike. I need to drink more water. Cabbage whites flutter above the flowers. A viceroy, not a monarch, is there too. I remember what they smell like. Incredibly sweet for florals. Almost too sweet, like roadkill. A hint of spice. None of my perfumes match it. As floral as they are.
The bush sits 100ft away. The window blocks the hot summer air, the gentle breeze, and the fragrance. I can't smell them now. No shoes; I'm in long pajama pants and a raggedy t-shirt. My hair isn't done. I have to finish my water.
Hello have you heard of the wonderful ARPG rougelike "Hell clock"?
No?
Well you should!
Hell clock is a beautiful game with amazing art, very stylized. Banger music. Really great Portuguese voice acting. A cool story. Fun gameplay loop. And you should check it out right now
Forge powerful builds with endless loot in this relentless combination of Roguelike and ARPG. Blast through dungeons and unleash inhuman pow
I kinda don't wanna say anything about this game cuz I want you to experience it but it's just a fun game where you descend dungeons, fight enemies, loot better gear, battle bosses, die (or the time runs out on your clock), come back stronger. Do it all over again.
If you enjoy ARPGs or Rougelikes do consider checking it out
I'm not even kidding it's so clear that everyone sees black people and especially black women as some sort of alternate species. I'm getting into doll collection & customization videos because I've been getting into collecting myself and toys and art are supposed to bring me happiness and even there I can't escape the anti blackness. Like... you're lucky if you find a character or doll that's consistently brown skinned and carefully designed in popular brands. Collectors will always favor light skin or fantasy colors anyways. I had to watch a white creator call a custom Garnet doll "dummy thicc" and describe her in progress proportions as "female rappery" why couldn't just have said curvy? You're not funny or cool and I'm very tired
really love a corruption arc where the character is trying way too hard to make it work but they're in over their head and it's uncomfortable and embarrassing and they're swallowing their own puke every time they do something awful and damp with sweat and trembling but insistent that they can do this, they want it, they're not a child, but it's like they're playing dressup in clothes that are too big for them and trying to convince their own reflection in the mirror that they fit and it's just no fun to watch at all
+ then they find inside them a capacity for cruelty far more upsettingly vicious than anyone could have imagined and decide that because they enjoy how unafraid it makes them feel for the first time in as long as they can remember it must have been their true nature all along instead of something that had to be starved in the dark until it grew desperate enough to claw its way out 🙂↕️
Because I rarely read, I will log some of the books I deemed good enough to read in my eyes. I just started Ride or Die: A Feminist Manifesto for the Well-Being of Black Women by Shanita Hubbard, whom I had the wonderful privilege to hear speak at my University for a Black History Month conference.
It covers the Ride or Die trope that Black women experience, that is, a woman who is there in her community, relationships, workplace, and family as the foundation and manager of the people around her. She is responsible to make it all work and to keep it working, and if she doesn't, she has failed. The book (to my knowledge since I just started it), talks about how this trope has been established in Hip Hop and how to break from the cycle that has been repeated for generations in the Black community and at the hands of systemic racism.
I'm only a couple pages in so far, but it's already hitting home in some places and I already want to lend it to family members and friends. Will hopefully update as I read further.
WE RUNNING IT BACK!!! Melanin Beam Challenge 2026!!!
There's only TWO DIFFERENCES in the rules this year:
1) instead of only posting on August 8th (we hit post limit last year!!!) we are going to post them between August 7th and August 9th!!
2) tag your pieces with #melanin beam challenge AND #black character design - we got #melanin in the top Tumblr tag for 15 minutes last year, let's see if we can do two 👀
throughout the late 2000s and early 2010s, our generation was inundated with aave. it eclipsed lolcat as the "funny way to talk." ain't nobody got time fo dat turns into dat boi o shit waddup. this is blatantly not an "aracial" or "gen z" way to talk. it IS black english. not to mention the amount of black reaction images!!
WHY, specifically, is it black peoples' facial expressions that are seen as just so comical or exaggerated? analyze the history of this nation's comedy and tell me why you might be predisposed to thinking of black peoples' faces as just, "more emotive" or exaggeratedly funny than a white or nonblack person's
and throughout those years, 00s-10s, many black bloggers -- victims of the mass staff-led purge (under the cover of them being 'russian' while reichblr still exists) -- they DID tell us it was a problem, DID try to educate people who freak out at the insinuation of 'being racist,' DID argue, DID point out the duplicity and the appropriation and the gross equivalence of african american slang with unintelligence, goofiness, etc. and they were ignored, abused, cancelled, chased off, until being eventually mass deleted by our racist transmisogynistic staff.
we didn't do enough, and the generation after us gen z "kids" didn't stop the trend. using the '-ahh' suffix. rizz. no cap. ate. delulu. it's giving. it's serving. crash out. lock in. aura. tea. main character. bruh. slay. real. keep it 100.
all of the following images are or were popular reaction images! what do they all have in common?
it feels like the effort to categorize slang as AAVE and not 'gen z' or 'gen alpha' slang has really petered out. it feels like we stopped talking about digital blackface in an era where the administration is posting ai-generated videos of black women who speak and act like exaggerated stereotypes and it frustrates me because we all have a responsibility to understand our generation's role in normalizing this type of racist shit for kids today. this needs to be addressed!
Black people will never stop talking about this, but when we are on sites such as Tumblr, where so many of the white people feel that not only are they not racist, but that calling their racist behavior racist is emotional warfare on them, they will make sure to keep Black voices as silenced as possible.
Also, a lot of the Black people who got deleted or run off of the site weren't even accused of any type of Russian anything. A lot of them were just run the fuck off by the white Tumblr base on harassment shit.
