Was young and inexperienced when he met Scoutâs mom, and she was an âolder womanâ to him, teaching him a lot of life lessons. Heâs not a sentimental guy, but sheâs always stuck in his mind because of that.
Initially maintained his relationship with Scoutâs mom as part of his cover but got emotionally involved because he didnât know well enough not to. Heâs had affairs as part of his work in the time since but has become an expert in compartmentalizing his emotions. Spyâs a professional and doesnât want to be sloppy like he was that first time out.
Didnât initially know about her seven (at the time) children but was in too deep by the time he found out. Oh, and she has a possessive estranged husband, too, and oh god whatâs happening.
First dealt with the husband by scaring the shit out of him, enough to make him agree to let Scoutâs mom divorce him without a fight and even correct his behavior, for a while. He wouldâve been content to let it go at that, butâŚ
When the now ex-husband eventually came sniffing back around, Scoutâs mom was heavily pregnant, and Spy wasnât feeling charitable. He killed him in the ex-husbandâs apartment and made it look like an accident. He never told Scoutâs mom about this. She has her suspicions but thinks itâs actually kind of romantic. Spy has no idea she suspects, convinced he managed the perfect crime. Wrapped up in his espionage mentality, itâs easy for him to forget how perceptive she is.
Didnât voluntarily leave Scout and his mom but also didnât fight to stay with them when the organization he worked for found out about the mess heâd made and reassigned him elsewhere. He promised to stay in touch and actually did, unknown to Scout, including regular monetary gifts as informal child support.
Didnât want Scout to know about him growing up so that he wouldnât get caught up in the world Spy operated in. (He regrets that in retrospect.) He also just had no idea how to be a father and didnât want to risk being terrible at it. Spy is his job, leaving no room to play happy families.
Did make the time to check up on Scout when he was in the area, taking care that he was never noticed. Heâs sat in on more than a few pee-wee baseball games.
