Ohkyung cleared his throat, trying to push past the discomfort of the sudden vulnerable moment. “I don’t know... maybe,” he said. then quickly moving to change the subject and offering a smile. “What would you do with your time away?”

“ and you’re not just saying that? ” soojung questions, playfully squinting her eyes as she observes ohkyung’s face. “ okay. that’s nice. did something happen? ”

“No, I’m not just saying it this time,” Ohkyung replied. “Nothing has happened, that’s been the problem. I feel like I’ve hit a wall and I think I need some time to reset.”

“ soooo... about that sabatical we talked about, ” she begins, reaching for the others hand and linking their fingers together. “ have you tought about it? like, seriously. ” @rvohkyung

Ohkyung didn’t like taking any time off, but frankly he feels like sticking around the building just gives him more time to catastrophize everything in his head. “I’ve been thinking about it a lot, lately, actually.” He said with a sigh.

“i need advice,” aeri said somberly. there were dark, bruiselike circles under her eyes– she hadn’t had much sleep since idol project at all, first having an absolute breakdown around that, but then her entire future being a topic to tear apart. finally she broke, needing to reach out to those she deemed close for a second opinion. a real one. “at what point….do i cut my losses and go? at what point do i stop giving liberty a million chances, and go to make my own?” @rvxjei​ @rvseulki​ @rvjaehee​ @rvohkyung​

Truthfully, the past couple of years Ohkyung was having a tough time reconciling his work with Liberty. He saw so many talented individuals slipping through the cracks and having to sacrifice so much of their time for very little returns, and there was not a whole lot he could realistically do. “When you’re ready to leave, leave. Liberty’s not making any effort to keep you here, so they don’t deserve to have you, frankly,” he said.

“i feel like that might’ve been inevitable. honestly, i’m surprised none of my groupmates have never had to dramatically chop their hair. some of the colors the stylists give them can’t be good for the hair follicles,” she commented. “you were smart and were spared,” she laughed. “i think about the looks in reign’s first three or so years every day and die a little.”

"The styling of second gen was so bizarre - I don't think newer idols fully appreciate just how normal the styling is these days," Ohkyung laughed.

“true. and also….i mean, i don’t want to be rude and infer your age or anything, but edgier concepts in 2nd and 3rd gen kpop were definitely the wave, i feel like. maybe you were just trying to fit in with what you thought they wanted?”

“Maybe... it’s still a bit ridiculous, looking back on it. I don’t think anyone else was dressed quite like that. Just a lot more casual.”

“i mean, we know what happens. look what happened to seola. what’s still happening to seola,” jangbyul pointed out bluntly. seola was her friend, and she’d choreographed for the singer before, but anyone with eyes could tell that that girl wasn’t okay, and hadn’t been for a long time.

"You'd think after the amount of times these things have happened that we'd learn our lesson, but it seems like the trainees just keep debuting younger and younger. It's worrying," Ohkyung replied.

“you know, sometimes my job is a real fucking pain in the ass,” taehyung grumbled, scrubbing his face with his hands. “with all the new vocal trends these days, i’m forced to add so many filters and shit when i’m mixing, and it sounds disgusting more times than not. but it’s my job to comply so i can’t even do anything about it.”

"I can't even recognize my own brother on a track sometimes," Ohkyung joked. “I’m not crazy about management’s decisions lately, either. It feels like they’re trying too hard to chase after trends, and the quality is suffering because of it.”

“it’s so cool hearing songs come out that i did the topline and demo for,” seulki said with a grin, scrolling through the new releases on her phone. “like… i know how the song is going to go, but i get to discover it through someone else’s voice and hear how they put their spin on it. i feel like i make coloring books, and now i get to see how people interpret the lines.”

"I used to do guides before I started working at Liberty, it put me in a bad headspace. That was ages ago, though," Ohkyung responded. "I think I like that line of thought more. That it’s like a collaboration.”

“you know, i kind of liked that. promoting is good. i get really anxious beforehand, but during, we go so hard that i don’t have time to think,” he admitted. “less of an opportunity to get myself worked up i guess.”

“That... makes sense. It’s slightly alarming to hear it put that way, if I’m being completely honest, but it makes sense nonetheless,” Ohkyung responded. “As long as you’re staying healthy, that’s all that matters.”

“of course, but wouldn’t that have been right when traxx really started their training?” ahreum pointed out. “i still think that you would have fit right in. maybe even been a style leader within the trainee ranks of your new group.”

“I think so? One of the kids I auditioned on the same day as ended up training with them, so that sounds about right,” he said, then laughed. “God save the trainee that shows up to practice with four layers of shirts because Ohyung did it yesterday and it’s cool.”

“you were young. i think most young people go through a phase. yours just happened to be a bad boy phase. nothing to be ashamed about. if anything it seems to give you a good laugh.” she said turning away with a smile. there were definitely things she regretted doing. looking back she could see how stupid it was. but when your young you don’t know or just don’t care. she turned back around with a questioning look. “but what’s so appealing about being a bad boy?”

Nothing appealing about it, really. At least, not that I can see anymore,” Ohkyung admitted. It had been a long time, so the reasoning was far removed from how he thought now. “I saw a lot of the bands I liked when I was growing up that dressed like that and I thought it was cool, and I wanted to project that, I guess? I wasn’t cool--I’m still not cool.”

[ that’s beside the point, i guess. or maybe it is the point. maybe the point is that some companies say they have media training, but only teach the basics, and don’t prepare their idols for the realities of the job ahead of them ]

“Not extensive enough, apparently - it’s required for the trainees, but I’m not sure how much of a requirement it is for the musicians that get hired on,” Ohkyung said. It didn’t make sense to him that they’d leave Burnout’s musicians out of the lurch if they wanted them to be promoting with the performers, but then again, it’s not his job to be thinking about that. “I do see your point, though -- it should definitely be more in-depth.”

“I can imagine, especially with how Rewind’s schedules were late last year.  You all are young, sure, but a month of rest between promotions still seems to be cutting it close.”
