A sharp intake of breath disrupted the other-wise steady flow of his breathing, body shooting up into an upright position. However, regret soon followed at the sharp, throbbing pain which radiated both from his head and his chest. Instinctively, a palm became pressed against the side of his temple, body sagging back down into the worn mattress, succumbing to the pain easily. Features contorted together in pain, a ragged sigh escaped him as he tossed his head to the side, letting the pang ebb away.
“F’ck,” a swear, something uncommon for the lad.
Bleary eyes blinked in rapid succession, trying to see past the unfocused rims and the welled-tears—with little to no success. Jaw tightening, Emile groaned, resting a hand against his chest. Fingers feathered over the bandages there, and he found he was otherwise shirtless. Taking account to the sharp pain whenever he breathed in and out, he had concluded that some of his ribs were either bruised or broken; it was hard to tell.
He had no idea how long he laid there, in silence, but he spent the time trying to remember what the hell happened. The last thing he re-called was he was finishing up his lunch break and was about to check up on another patient. Did the patient attack? If so, then why was he in an unfamiliar, darkly lit room rather than the sterile and almost completely white environment of the hospital? A little too late, his ears detected the sound of approaching footsteps and his head jerked up as the door swung open.
Almost immediately his mouth began to water as the aroma of something cooking wafted into the room, though the stranger’s hands were empty; which made him wonder where he was and why he was here. More importantly, how long he has been there—his mother would be worried sick by now.
“Wh—,” the word ’ who ’ hung on his tongue, but was interrupted by a clearing of his throat, trying to speak past its dry condition.
It was early that morning that Tommy had gotten some rather concerning news. Emile, his finest boy, was left beaten to a pulp. Better, in front of The Garrison itself. It didn't take much cleverness to guess that it had been a blatant attack on not only the boy, but the Peaky Blinders too. It wasn't particularly hard to see the bond between the two of them and any of the backstabbing traitors that Tommy had to toss out every so often could tell one of their enemies (Kimber, maybe? Rocky relations did tend to create these sorts of situations) of the supposed weakness.
Of course, the smartest thing to do in that case was to show that Emile wasn't a weakness. To ship him off to some public hospital, or maybe leave him under the church's care (if they'd even accept someone like him) as to show that he was no more special than any other member. But as smart as Tommy could be sometimes, he was stupid enough to insist that the injured boy stayed in his house, with his family, and be treated as such. Hell, Arthur hardly even got that much coddling last time he was shot.
It was always either Ada or Tommy himself checking up on him. The only two with any proper medical training--if you could call the young lady's crash course on infections real training. The boy'd been out nearly a full day and anyone could have seen the worry in Tom's shaking hands and bitten lips. He should have been more mature about this. If the kid died, the kid died and it wasn't as if he was going to be able to do anything about it. But that didn't keep him from walking up those stairs and into the room.
"Pol's made supper, if y' hungry,"
Likely, he would have continued on about how Emile had given them quite the scare, and how he was lucky to even be alive or something. But the look in the poor kid's eyes was enough to make him stop. He looked... lost. A special sort of lost that made Tommy's heart race. Still, he tried to play it off casual-like. Couldn't be worrying the patients, after all.
"What, 'ave y'seen a ghost or somethin'?"
"I got a new pair of shoes!” He’s acting childish; but it’s rare for him to have anything new — such is his fate that most of the things he receives are old and wasting away.
"Now that's lovely f'you, but I'm afraid I've got more pressin' matters than shoes."
"D'y' 'ave anythin' else t' say t' me?"

"Then I'd suggest y'mind what y'say from now on." And the looks. The ones people always told stories of Tommy killing people over. While most of them were completely untrue, he had to admit that the temptation was strong enough to make him question at times. Particularly on these days, when he just couldn't get himself out of that sour mood he always tried to hide.
