Luffy and Nami's dynamic is just so good. Like Luffy treats Nami with such awe and respect, from the moment they first met, he was already certain he wanted her on his crew. But Nami ends up leaving anyway (even taking their ship with her) and yet Luffy doesn't take that as an immediate betrayal (even when everyone else said so) and still sails off after her. He reaches her village and has no clue about what's at stake or what's going on. All he knows is that Nami is here and he needs his navigator back. When they meet again, she is nothing but hostile. Her words are full of sharp and hurtful things aimed towards him and the crew, her last ditch effort to make them (him) leave her alone. And yet he continues to stay. He doesn't care much for the how's and why's or when's. All he cares about is her and what's happening now. He stays and he watches over her, but doesn't goes as far as meddling with her business. He patiently waits and only ever intervenes when she starts hurting herself. And when she finally breaks and surrenders to her grief and exhaustion. When she finally opens up and asks for his help, he offers his treasure to her in exchange. He doesn't completely understand what’s happening but what he does understand is that Nami is finally asking him for help and that whoever name his navigator cry is going to pay. And so then he pushes forward and starts taking names. He fights and bleeds and eradicates everything that had caused Nami's pain and grief until there is nothing left. He does not stop until every bloodied map and pen is gone, until every physical and metaphorical shackle weighing her down to her captor is completely wiped off. And then he tells her again, that's she's part of his crew. And this time she no longer denies it.

yes everybody knows already that luffy is deeply compassionate and empathetic despite seeming like a brainless idiot most of the time, but to think that shanks losing his arm saving him affected him so much, that he adopted this completely indomitable fighting spirit. when I think of that time during baratie when he got angry with sanji for being so willing to sacrifice his life after zeff lost his leg for him, it makes me imagine that shanks’ sacrifice for him is wayyy more of a driving force for him than it seems. that he has this terrifying determination to fight and live and not let anyone stop him because it would be a disservice to shanks and the sacrifice he made for him.

luffy IS selfish. i need to correct myself. he does everything simply because he wants to and he doesn’t care how big of a mess he makes to get his way. but his way is always freedom and kindness and food for the hungry and water in parched lands and happiness for everyone around him. his selfishness is so inherently selfless that it feels wrong to call him selfish but he is undeniably selfish. it just so happens that he’s kind, too.

lunami as intentional soulmates. there were no red strings of faith involved. no divine intervention. no stars were aligned. luffy willed this. he picked her. nami became his navigator. his. from the moment they first met because he wanted her to. and in return, nami stayed.

lunami truly is just: thank you for engaging in the mortifying ordeal of being known so that i may partake in the euphoric experience of knowing you.

nami, learning to open up and ask for help after years of isolation and self-reliance.

luffy, offering his hand (his help, his dreams, himself) to her with little to no fanfare, his mind made up from the moment he first met her. she will be his navigator. end of discussion.

their relationship is forged through blood and unshakable trust, and a promise of freedom and a life of companionship.

in the end luffy gets a navigator who would take him to the ends of the sea, and in return nami learns to smile again, to live a life she never knew she'd get to experience.

and with each other, they are both happier and freer than ever before.

they spend the rest of the story getting to know each other to the point where they are capable to trusting the other with their most prized treasure (luffy, his hat. nami, her dream and her freedom)
