Not gonna argue there, but your expression is the cutest.
I could say the same about the first time you felt the kick. Pretty damn cool moment, if I say so myself.
I think I’ve come to the conclusion that there is nothing better than seeing Ryan’s face every time he feels the baby kick.
Except for actually feelin' it kick.
A Little Surprise (11:15am)
Her eyes were glued to the monitor, a few tears slipping down her cheeks. It kind of hit her all at once. This was 100% real. There was a life that her and Ryan created together growing inside of her. She took a shaky breath, and let it out slowly. Right as the question left the doctor’s mouth, Mackenzie started nodding, a big smile on her face. “Absolutely.”
She felt the doctor move the wand across her stomach a few more times. “Well,” Dr. Bowen began. Mackenzie turned her head back to the screen, her smile still present. “It looks like you’ve got a baby girl.” As soon as the words hit her ears, Kenzie’s hand flew to her mouth and her eyes shot up to Ryan’s. She laughed happily, “Oh my gosh.”
Ryan gently lifted his open hand to wipe away one of the few tears that danced down Mackenzie's face. He was in awe of what the two had created together, and in a few moments, they'd know what in fact they had created. Ryan glanced back down to Mackenzie as soon as she spoke out, smiling yet again to the beautiful blonde that laid on the chair beside him.
It looks like you've got a baby girl. After his jaw dropped, anyone in the room would have seen him mouth 'oh my god.' The smile that Ryan thought was already large grew rapidly wider. If he didn't hold back, he could have easily started bouncing on his toes. "A girl, we're having a girl." He spoke to himself, loudly but yet very proudly. Looking back to Mackenzie, she was glowing. He was certain this would be a day he'd remember for the rest of his life.
Bending down, he softly kissed Mackenzie's forehead. "I love you." He gently whispered while tucking a fall hair strand behind her ear.
A Little Surprise (11:15am)
Mackenzie smiled at his reaction, he was cute when he was nervous. When he let go of her hand, she folded her own together and said, “I’m just kind of used to getting poked at.” Kenzie thought for a moment, as much as she’d like to have a little girl (who would no doubt look like her but be a daddy’s girl), she would love to have a baby boy (the spitting image of Ryan) just as bad. “Yeah…but a boy doesn’t sound that bad. As long as our baby is healthy, I’ll be happy.”
Suddenly, there was a soft knock on the door and a shorter middle-aged woman stepped into the room. “How are you doing, Mackenzie?” Dr. Bowen asked with a smile. Kenzie’s hands absentmindedly went to her small bump. “Good, I think. No more morning sickness…so that’s a plus.”
A few minutes later, Dr. Bowen asked Mackenzie to lay back and raise her shirt up for an ultrasound. She grabbed Ryan’s hand and this time it was her with the death grip. “This is probably gonna be cold.” She said as she squirted the gel onto Mackenzie’s stomach, causing Kenzie to flinch slightly. As soon as she heard the baby’s heartbeat, tears sprung to her eyes. She looked up at Ryan and caught him wiping his eyes, she gave him a smile and squeezed his hand. The doctor smiled at the scene before her and asked, “You guys want to know the sex of the baby?”
Ryan let out an air filled laugh, "yeah, you'd think I'd get used to it by now as well." Ryan shrugged his shoulders, waiting decently patient for the doctor to emerge through the doorway. Each passing second seemed like two hours, and each minute felt like a day.
He wouldn't lie, Ryan always had a fantasy of teaching his little boy how to throw a football or cast a line. Part of him knew though, if he were to raise a boy, he would be afraid that the boy would turn into what Ryan was in high school. At least if he had a girl, he would know how to protect her, guide her in the right direction... away from boys like his self.
As soon as Dr. Bowen walked through the doorway, Ryan shuffled closer to Mackenzie's side. As if it was synchronized, as soon as Mackenzie lifted her shirt, her hand reacquainted with his causing his gaze to drift from her stomach to his hand. The grip on his hand mimicked his grip earlier, causing Ryan to smirk. As soon as Dr. Bowen's curious voice echo through the room, his eyes darted from his hand to her face. Nervously, he glanced down to Mackenzie who was happily nodding her head yes. "Damn right, we do." He said proudly, joy evident in his voice. He gently squeeze Mackenzie's hand twice, showing his excitement as he looked down at her with a grin from ear to ear.
A Little Surprise (11:15am)
If there is one place Mackenzie feels most like herself, it’s a doctor’s office. She knows that’s a little weird, considering doctor’s offices and hospitals terrify most people, but it’s true. She’s a little sad that she’ll never be on the other side of things but she’s coming to accept that God changed his plans for her. When she looks around the waiting room she sees women in different stages of pregnancy; a few aren’t showing at all, one seems to be as far along as Mackenzie, and another looks like she’s going to give birth any minute. She catches a glimpse of Ryan next to her and he’s got a tight hold on her hand and the look on his face gives him away. He’s nervous and he doesn’t like that he’s around so many pregnant women at the same time. Mackenzie lets out a little laugh and shakes her head, she’s always been able to read him.
“Mackenzie Summers?” a woman a few years older than Kenzie steps out into the waiting room and looks around. Mackenzie stands up slowly, dragging Ryan along with her and gives the nurse a smile, “Hi.” she says. They follow the nurse to an examination room where she tells Mackenzie to have a seat on the examination table. From there, the nurse does the normal checkup routine before the doctor comes in. “Dr. Bowen will be right with you.” the nurse gives a small smile and exists the room. As soon as she’s gone, Kenzie turns and looks up at Ryan, “You gonna loosen up that death grip on my hand anytime soon? You’re more nervous than I am.”
The sense of the unknown made Ryan nervous. So many women around him knew exactly what they were doing, meanwhile he sat in silence, waiting for the doctor to call out Mackenzie's name. He let out a deep breath he wasn't aware he was holding in as he glances around the room. Mackenzie looked as sound as the birds sitting out on the limbs of trees outside the window. He was thankful she was more at ease than he was.
Ryan heard Mackenzie's name call out and darted his eyes to the doorway. Before he knew it, Mackenzie was pulling him out of his chair, leading the way for the two. Ryan nodded to the woman with a slight smile as Mackenzie verbally greeted her.
"Thank you." He called out as the nurse left, his eyes still set on the doorway the nurse walked out of. He felt a tug on his hand that was tightly gripped around Mackenzie's. "What?" He asked startled, "sorry. I don't really what's goin' on. I think women have a higher sense of ease here." Ryan swiftly released his grip on Mackenzie's hand, causing himself to start twiddling his thumbs. "This is it." He bluntly stated, becoming more anxious than ever. "You still pullin' for a girl? Cause I am."
Then watch what you say or it’ll be your new bed for the next five months.
You know I’m not kiddin’.
Babe, you know I'm just kidding around. I don't honestly like seeing your irritated or upset about things you can't have.
Dangerous. I’m surprised you haven’t yet learned your lesson about taunting a pregnant woman.
Oh, no.. I have. It's the best friend that I apparently still struggle with.
Do you want to sleep on the couch?
It's not exactly my ideal, favorite place. So no, not really.
You know I'm just kiddin'.
At this point, I'm not sure if it's entertaining or dangerous to be around Kenz with the lack of coffee.
It is all your fault, you know.
Well, I'd damn hope it is my fault.
#sigh i'll probably never look this good again #(thanks to a certain someone named ryan)
mackenziesummers replied to your post: Yknow, I knew it was real when Kenz told me she...
I believe a certain someone started tearing up.
Well, damn right I did.
Y'know, I knew it was real when Kenz told me she was pregnant but actually hearing the heartbeat? Explainable. It was fuckin' incredible.
