I hate to admit it, but I’ve been jealous-ish of UW-Madison for sometime now. I have a Badger for a little sister and, when compared against the U, my family and friends seem to consider Madison the superior institution athletically, academically, and socially. My jealousy hit a high after my first visit to Madison when I had to see their abundance of high-rise apartments with views of Lake Mendota. The U at the time had three “luxury” apartments (1301, Keeler, and Northstar) and not one of them had a fighting height of more than five stories. Thus, I’ve been pleased by the trend of more and more high-end student living and corporate franchises in Dinkytown. I take it as proof that there’s a serious effort to transition Dinkytown from commuter campus to a proper Big Ten college town. But this video reminded me that although I loved how convenient it was to have Five Guys right there, the real aesthetic of my college memories was built upon experiences at Annie’s and the Loring Pasta Bar and Pagoda and Burrito Loco. I can’t say I feel too good about the outlook of mom-and-pops shops in Dinkytown; I honestly believe bigger will be better for that campus. But this definitely reminded me that, on at least some level, Dinkytown needs to be kept dinky.
A brand jingle alerting you to a product you recently searched for is an undoubtedly cool idea, but how far away are we from that? Consumers might just write the concept off as an annoying invasion of privacy, not to mention that phones today are on ‘vibrate’ 90 percent of the time.
The Economist is wrong; the jingle certainly isn’t dead. It’d be very hard, in my opinion, to argue against the impact that jingles from FreeCreditReport, Subway, and State Farm have had on consumer recall.
While I’d be inclined to agree that a jingle does more for a brand than a shuffle of the “latest hipster jam[s],” I don’t know if it does more for a commercial (and therefore an agency hoping to be recognized) than a good song choice. I’d be all for everyday commercials attempting to permeate the subliminal of consumers by employing jingles, but I think a good song choice can separate you from a pack of big game spots. I couldn’t tell you how a bunch of Oliver Twists, Samsung’s new mobile watch, and "Royals" all fit together, but I’ve remembered this commercial vividly since I first saw it and every friend I’ve showed it to has said they liked the commercial more than he or she liked the original song. Furthermore, since it’s a tune people would recognize, they’d be more likely to stop what they were doing to catch a glimpse of this commercial. That’s gotta be worth something in a world where consumers whip out their iPhones and iPads every time their programming cuts to a commercial.

‘You! Me! Dancing!’ is the only song I’ve ever downloaded by Los Campesinos! I remember trying to show it off whenever I took control of music duties when I was around friends. That attempt to demonstrate one’s evolving music tastes and the ability to find a high quality song that’ll never make it into The Weekend Top 30. I can’t remember which music blog site I downloaded the song from, but I remember feeling some certain connection with Budweiser. They had found my song. Also, the music just fits the action of the commercial so well.
