Friday Nights (Embry Call x Reader)
summary: meeting your soulmate has never been as inconvenient as it was for Embry Call, but love works in mysterious ways.
Itβd been weeks since the accident and Embry spent more time with you than you thought possible, not that you minded. Heβd pick you up from school at least once a week, invite you to La Pushβs beach on the weekends, and took you to bonfires with his pack brothers. The closer you got to him, you thought, the more you started to develop a liking for him that leaned more romantically than it did platonically. You didnβt want to mention it though; you were happy with the friendship the pair of you possessed and wanted not to complicated it with what you thought were unrequited feelings.
It was a Friday night and, finding yourself with no plans to go out, you sat on the worn out couch with the remote in your hand. With Bella hanging out with Jacob again, you had no reason to worry about her whereabouts. Aimlessly flipping through the channels, you were shocked to hear the doorbell ring. Charlie was working late tonight and you had not expected any visitors. Pulling the blanket off your lap, you moved to open the door. When met with the sight of Embry, your heart leaped at the small smile playing on his face.
βHey Y/N, sorry for not telling you I was dropping by,β he apologized. βBut I was wondering if you wanted to go out for dinner? I know this diner that makes the best burgers youβll ever taste.β
βYeah, sure, just give me a second to change,β you replied, pointing to your sweats, causing him to smile at your disarrayed form.
βSo, what do you think?β Embry questioned as you took the first bite.
You made a sound of approval, the juicy burger making your taste buds explode with joy. He laughed at your response before taking a bite of his own dinner. Swallowing down your food, you raised your head slightly to face him.
βRosalie would be so disappointed with me for this,β you joked, pointing at you two.
He cocked an eyebrow in question, his mouth still filled with food.
βHanging out with a wolf would not fit her idea of βstaying safeβ while she left,β you explained, remembering her warning the day she left.
Your heart ached at the thought of her, the absence of your best friend causing you to miss her dearly. Upon finding out the Cullens were vampires, you found yourself siding with her in the notion that immortality was a curse rather than a blessing. She was glad she found someone who shared the same ideology she did and was shocked at how much she enjoyed your company. When she informed you of their departure, she made you promise to keep safe, her eyes steely.
βAnd the company of vampires fits the textbook definition of safe?β he questioned rhetorically.
βListen, thereβs something Iβve been meaning to tell you,β Embry said, reaching for your hand on the old dinerβs table.
βWhatβs wrong?β you asked with furrowed brows.
βNot here, do you mind if we go to the beach for a while?β he said, eyes boring into yours.
Nodding your approval, he slung his arm around your shoulders as you guys headed out, a gesture you got used to when hanging out with the young wolf. Noticing the heavy rain outside, Embry asked you to wait in the restaurant as he got the car to the front of the place.
As you waited for him, a hand tapped your shoulder. You turned to face Mike Newton, a friend of your sisterβs.
βHey, Y/N, how are you?β he asked, smiling.
You guys fell into a somewhat awkward conversation. Though you werenβt close to him, you knew of his crush on Bella and felt it slightly weird to be talking to you out of the schoolβs cafeteria.
Halfway through, Embry came back, returning his arm around your shoulder, pulling you to him gently. βWhoβs this?
You looked up to answer him and found him glaring at Mike. βJust a friend of Bellaβs.β
βWell we should be going, Iβve got the car started outside,β he replied, jaw clenched.
You watched Mike gulp in intimidation, Embryβs black-clad body and daunting height leaving Newton mumbling his farewell before scattering away. Bidding Mike goodbye, you walked towards the car, turning to face the tall boy next to you. You watched as he tightened his grip on the steering wheel, amusement swimming in your eyes.
βAre you jealous or something?β you asked, laughing.
He turned to face you, eyes softening at the sight of your happiness. βOf course not,β he scoffed.
βWell, if you are, I donβt know him that well, anyways. His Bella pining is kind of annoying,β you teased.
Embry laughed in response, his knuckles no longer white but relaxed. You stretched your arm and cranked up the radio, a favorite song of yours now blaring through the car. Soon enough, he joined your singing, your off-tune voices leaving you guys in fits of uncontrollable laughter.
You walked along the beach, searching for a secluded spot. When finding one near the ridge of trees, he pulled you towards it.
He turned to face you, his hands wringing nervously. βRemember when we first met and I explained all the Quileute legends?β he asked.
Watching you nod, he continued. βWhat do you know about imprinting?β
βNot much, really, just that it means you found your soulmate,β you replied.
βWell, when you imprint, itβs like itβs not the sun that youβre revolving around, itβs her. Everything you do, everything you wish for, revolves around her. When I first met you, I froze, remember? Itβs because I imprinted on you; thatβs why I got all weird when you talked to that guy at the diner,β he explained.
At his confession, you only stared at him, unable to comprehend the depth of his words. You always liked the idea of soulmates, but this was too much. It was like fate had forced him to fall in love with you, making you loathe the idea of it.
βSo, what? The only reason you like me is that your genetics told you to? I really canβt do this, Embry,β you said, shaking your head.
You turned to walk away from him, only for him to grab your wrist in protest, his touch was light, however, and you pulled away from him easily.
This time, when you walked away, he didnβt stop you.
