He instantly brightened, nodding enthusiastically. “Good, we can go out and do stuff. You been to the Natural History Museum yet?” Shak scratched the back of his neck, twisting his mouth to the side. “Has Dallas told you about our … adoption plan…thing?” he asked shyly, with little to none of the fervor that was supposed to come naturally when discussing his dream future.

Ry smiled at his friend’s excitement and nodded. “Sure, why not. I want to do stuff. No, but I really want to go! Night at the Museum has brought up my hopes for real life exhibits.” He looked at Shak intently when he stopped being all perky. “This is the first I’m hearing about it...You don’t look too excited.”

“Shush! I can have two favorite people, Ry.” He chuckled, nodding his head. “You do! You’ve been my best friend for…god knows, YEARS! Thank God, because I need someone to share insanity with me.” He winked, before moving to grabbing another towel for him. “May need this, bud.” He laughed. “That’s all you need!! Especially me, because he gets grumpy. But enough about him, tell me all about your wild and colorful love life!” he hopped to sit on the counter. “Okay I just won’t read your essay if you’re going to call me names!” he teased.

“I mean I guess, but I still want to be the top favorite. It’s like America’s Next Top Model for me.” He giggled then put his hand on his heart. “D’awww Dalls! I remember when I first met you, you pushed me into the dirt at school then became my friend over me and you wearing the same shirt. Cute days!” Ry took the towel from him fake-mad like and continued wiping down the counter. “That’s what happens to med students who don’t catch a break.” He explained, setting the towel down and leaning against the back counter. “My life? Is boring. We’ve been through this hundreds of times! The only thing exciting is the fact my parents are still trying to win me back.” Ry said in mock laughter. “No no! Read it!”

"Who, like Guy Fieri?" Shakir scrunched his nose and laughed. "He seems like a bit of a weirdo, though. Never been able to get past his hair." His phone suddenly pinged from his pocket, and he pulled it off of his thigh with ease. His lips moved slightly as he read the notification on the lock screen, brows furrowing with a frown. He shook his head and pressed the lock key, setting it down on the counter next to a napkin holder. "What time do you get off?"

“Yeah! Or like...uh, Andrew Zimmerman!” He said, snickering.”You have to be a little weird to be a famous tv food critic.” Ry got quiet when Shak began to read whatever was on his phone. He cleaned up plates and mugs, putting them in the dishwasher and cleaned down the counter. “Problem?” He asked, seeing his friend’s face. Ry wiped his hands on his smock and looked at the clock. “Half an hour.”

Dallas grinned, rocking him a little bit. “Just hanging out with you! My favorite person ever.” he grinned. “Yeah, let’s find a party, and then we’ll…wait…I don’t know of any parties happening tonight…oh dammit.” he snapped his fingers. “Oh dude, I’m down for that. I love reading essays!” he cheered. “And I love video games and I love eating. You know the way to my heart.”

“Your favorite person ever? I thought that was Shakir?” He questioned before getting excited again. “Do I finally hold the place in your heart as your favorite?!” Ry beamed, bouncing on his heels. He grabbed a rag off of the back counter and began cleaning up coffee stains. “You don’t? Dammit. Home schooling sucks okay..I have no friends besides you and Shakir.” Ry chuckled at Dallas’ giddiness over the essay. “You, friend, are a nerd. I know I do, which makes me a perfect friend.”

"Hell if I know," Shakir sighed with a defeated shrug, "Dally’s taken charge of all the details, I’m just supposed to show up and make sure my parents don’t." He paused, shooting Ry a look. "Don’t tell him I said that." Shak couldn’t help but chuckle at his friend’s comment. He flicked a morsel of muffin at Ry’s chest with a pseudo disgusted look. "Well you know what they say," he couldn’t keep his face straight, breaking into a grin, "Roaches are a great source of protein."

“And this week on groomzilla..” Ry said in an TV voice over voice. He laughed and held up his hands in defense. “Buddy, I might hate when you guys put me in between y’alls little problems, but your secret is safe with moi. You have my word.” Ry didn’t even bother to move when the piece hit the front of his smock, his head moved to watch it bounce off on the floor. He moved it under the counter and leaned his elbows on the counter, laughing at Shakir’s input. “Ask one of those big time celebrities that are only famous because they’re food critics! They’ll tell you the same.”

Shakir fumbled with the paper round the muffin as Ry spoke, smiling up at him with a sideways look. “Might scare off chicks with all that analytical chatter,” He warned with a wink, tearing off a chunk of his breakfast and popping it into his mouth. “S’alright. Between wedding plans and midterms, it’s kept me busy. Enough, anyway. You having fun ‘round here?” He gestured around the place, curiously picking at his muffin.

Ry looked up and smiled, chuckling to himself. “Ever thought of being a comedian, S? I think you’d be one of the funniest.” He responded sarcastically. Ry stood up when more people began to come into the cafe and began taking orders. “Wedding, forgot about yours and Dal’s little shin dig. When is it anyway?” He asked, looking between Shakir and customers. Ry fiddled with the coffee pot and shrugged. “No, but it’s what pays the bills and food I eat.” He sighed, pouring coffee into cups. “The place sucks, bugs everywhere.” Ry stated, winking at a customer who had overheard him.

Shakir sighed and ran a hand through his hair, shrugging apologetically. "Sorry man, that's what I came here for. Got sick of studying." He slid into a counter seat, peering past Ry's head longingly at the muffin display, stomach rumbling sympathetically. "Think your boss would notice if you donated one of those to a starving med student?" Shakir half teased, but his smile was strained enough. Between his exhaustion and the eleven espresso shots between now and his last meal (whenever the hell that had been), along with the heavy dark circles haloing his eyes and the scruffy five o'clock shadow he'd been sporting all weekend, Shak was only one empty styrofoam cup from a homeless man - a fact he wasn't ready to come to terms with quite yet, but knew it must have been written all over his face.

“We’re both screwed then.” The eighteen year old whined, letting go of his friend and leaning against the counter. Ry looked at the muffins, picking up one and tossing it to Shak. “Who gives? Go for it.” He stayed quiet for a moment, observing his friend closely. It was something weird he did in his past time, but he couldn’t help it. He was an observer. He tend to also be a thousand miles away when his day dreams took over, but his eyes continued viewing the person in front of him. “Med student, studies from nine to five. Goes to his classes, tries to be sociable yet continuously looks like his mind is far off. Also knows how to make scruff work on a tired face.” Ry mumbled, once again playing the dumb game he had been doing all day. “How’s school?”

Dallas walked into the coffee shop, seeing Ry there and smiling. “Ry! Hey man.” He grinned, running over to tackle him in a hug. “Yes! I’ll tell you anything you wanna know. Ask me questions!”

Ry leaned over the counter, engulfing his friend into a bear hug. “Sup my brother!” He moved back and smiled at Dallas, now leaning against one of glass cases. “I knew there was a reason why I let you talk me into coming here. Uh, parties? Any tonight? Will you help me with my high school essay and if no parties, can we hang out tonight over video games and munchies?”

Seeing that the cafe was slower than usual, Ry was leaned over the counter - bored out of his mind and playing the ‘What type of personality does that person have’ game by himself. He groaned and turned away from the customers, playing a game on his phone. As he played his game, the cafe bell rung as the door open and he looked up to see one of his friends come in. Ry quickly shoved his phone into his pocket and grabbed their shoulders when they came up to the cashier. “I’m dying here! Please tell me something exciting is going on today.”
