“Tell me I won’t and I will.” -Ryker Jacobs, 17, Junior
Ryker has been a fighter since birth. He was born with Patent Forame Ovale, which is just a fancy way of saying there’s a hole in his heart. Now usually this condition isn’t a big deal and the hole usually seals itself in the first few months of life, but Ryker was lucky enough to be part of the 25% where it doesn’t. It also usually doesn’t cause health problems or require treatment, but being the smaller out of him and his twin sister, any irregularity in his health was an issue. He would constantly struggle with shortness of breath and a slight blue tinge to his lips due to lack of oxygen performing daily activities.
The doctors advised that he didn’t participate in strenuous extracurricular activities due to his condition, but Ryker was having none of that. He was tired of being told what not to do because of his “condition” and he wanted to prove that he could do anything despite that. His twin sister Rachel has always been involved in cheerleading and while there should have been some stress on their relationship because of the differing treatment of the two, the two had always been so close they could have been attached at the hip. So Ryker set his mind to cheerleading, despite protests about his health and even protests about what would happen to his social standing when they reached high school.
His parents worries were for nothing as he excelled at the sport, increasing his endurance and physical stamina by doing so. From that point on, he made it his mission to do anything that people told him he could not do. He became the male cheerleader that had piercings and dressed like he just came from a Green Day or Fall Out Boy concert. He became the boy that dressed like that but loved country music. He won’t give you a definitive answer on who he likes, because he doesn’t have a preference. To everyone else he is a rebel without a cause, but after years of being labeled the sick twin, he wants nothing more than to break free of labels.
