0433 Nu / Ryosuke Yazaki 2025 Ichii Sawara Hinoki oil wax

On a calm autumn morning filled with gentle wind and radiant light, I was able to photograph the backside of 0433 Nu. The base and its reverse surface have now settled into balance, and I am preparing to begin the coloring process. Although the original theme centered on weight and grounding, a new sense of fluctuation and subtle movement has begun to emerge within the form.
0433 Nu / Ryosuke Yazaki 2025 Ichii Sawara Hinoki oil wax
W 13.5inch D 4.1inch H 12.3inch
The backside of 0433 Nu is deeply carved, revealing rich layers of shadow. The central contour line that once ran through the core has gradually dissolved, transforming into a tangible mass that gives the sculpture a sense of thickness and weight. Yet, despite this solid composition, the work still holds the potential to express a greater sense of floating â an expansion of lightness and lift within the density of its form.
Suigen / Ryosuke Yazaki 2021
Hinoki Sawara Kusu oil
W 11.4inch D 8.5inch H 23.8inch
A view of Suigen from the left side reveals how the forms of hinoki, camphor, and sawara converge at the summit, extending their energy forward. The force emanating from this sculpture is something no ordinary object or decorative piece could ever embody. Instead, it conveys a profoundly elevated presenceâan existence that has been sublimated beyond material form.

We are now in the era of Miroku, the Age of Aquarius, where planets reverse and destiny shiftsâwhat once seemed good is no longer so. Yet the future remains unwritten and change is inevitable. Miroku Wood embodies this consciousness: it absorbs and reverses all, sustaining stability. The hollow space linking the right chest and left side breathes outward. It is a work that gave me a clear sense of response.

When I look at this image, it brings back vivid memories of my creative journey. Since my debut as a sculptor, every work I have created has been assigned a sequential numberâbeginning with 0001 and continuing up to the present 0431.
This practice follows the teaching of my grandfather, who told me: âAlways build upon the work that came before. Do not suddenly break the flow by making something contrived. Form will emerge naturally through steady accumulation.â I remember these words clearly.
Remaining faithful to this continuous progression has become the very foundation of my artistic practice.
Khufu / Ryosuke Yazaki, 2023
Terracotta, tonoko
W 11 in Ă D 11 in Ă H 19 in
Khufu reveals an inner space that connects seamlessly with its outer form, creating a sense of continuity. The paired figures generate large, wave-like movements, yet their posture feels suspendedâvibrating in stillness. This presence echoes the hidden chamber within Pharaoh Khufuâs pyramid, a space that remained undiscovered for thousands of years.

Suigen, completed in early 2021, was created as a form that purifies a world paralyzed by the pandemic, like a clear stream washing everything back into a state of clarity. Today, when we stand before it, the work seems to embody particles scattering through space, as if carrying the power to bring change. It conveys the sense of a force capable of transforming the surrounding environment.
Kofuu naimen / Ryosuke Yazaki 2020 Kusu oil wax
W 8.2inch D 3inch H 12.5inch
Meaning âthe inner aspect of the ancient,â this sculpture embodies a simpler, more distilled style. Its posture leans forward, giving a strong sense of direction, while its subtle expressions and deep shadows create a timeless presenceâan image of pure strength that never loses its impact.

Although it was never my intention, Seishi terracotta reveals itself as if illuminated by a radiant halo. The work carries a quiet presence, its surface absorbing and reflecting light in a way that evokes a sense of sanctity and transcendence.

Omoi looks forward with three ascending heads rising above, embodying a sense of vision and emergence. In its abdomen, Kofuu suggests a form that was once united as a single mass. The two elements reveal a flowing connection, showing how their presence is intertwined and related.

âSeishiâ (terracotta) was first presented in the 1994 solo exhibition as the terracotta version of Seishi. In contrast, Omoi, created in 2020 using Japanese woods such as hinoki (cypress), sawara (cedar), and kusu (camphor), embodies the emotions and inner reflections of that time. When these two works stand side by side, an unexpected and harmonious resonance emerges, evoking a profound sense of balance and dialogue across time and material.
