Casually-- Mikado slide away from that topic and into the next. Hoping his voice didn’t shake this time as it always seemed to when it came to his own feelings.  “...Ye...s? Ah.... well...”

Emotional communicating was not his strong suit

Thankfully, Mikado could always count on Aoba to lead him back, because he really didn’t’ have a good excuse for being here. “Don’t even joke, I always worry about you--... my friend.. Maintaining a proper diet is a must.”

“...” There was a small part of Mikado that sent off a little warning bell, and he tried to suppress the feeling that he was overstepping a boundary.

"I wanted to ..uh..” Mikado drew a blank. He’s actual reason for being here was not one he wanted to admit to having; he was lonely. “...see... ... you... if you had eaten yet.”

”I could come back later if you want.” Mikado did call first, but Aoba hadn’t answered.

    Aoba sends off a quick text as Mikado speaks in hushed tones, tuning in only after he’s gotten a reply. He hums gently in response (a substitute for ‘you’re welcome’) – plastering on a smile whilst turning back to regard Mikado again. He’d only been half-listening, of course; he was preoccupied by his phone – and for good reason! Unbeknownst to his fearless leader Aoba had already lined up a home for his little cat family (… whether or not he liked where would later be up for debate). But until then –!

“Oh – the fire?” Aoba pauses for a moment, opening and closing his mouth not once, but twice to speak – to no avail. … He laughs instead – sheepishly. It wasn’t any of them if Mikado was wondering … That much was certain.

“We haven’t started asking around yet. “But if you want us to begin tonight,” he pauses to nod toward the rest of the group, pocketing his phone again. “All you have to do is say the word, Captain.”

     It wouldn’t be a problem for them; they were free for the evening – and they all had their connections. It would only be a matter of hours before they found the culprit and roughed them up a bit. … But something about the way Mikado waves his hands about tells Aoba punishing the perpetrator was the last thing on his mind.

     He raises a brow briefly in question. … ‘She’? Anri? No –

“Do you mean Jean..ette?” He says her name slowly – carefully – (almost as if he’s forgotten about her) – before it *clicks*.

     Right. Jeanette. 

“Can’t you hide it from her? Like this?” Features twisting into something rivaling a pout, Aoba closes in a step and pulls at Mikado’s sleeves – tugging them down and over his bandages. “It shouldn’t be hard as long as you’re inconspicuous.”

“I doubt it’s going to be that simple-- She’s..” Mikado paused, mouth opening, trying to come up with the perfect way to describe Jeanette. “Perceptive when it comes to me. I...”

He bit down on his lip, casting his eyes over to rest of the gang before continuing. “It’s complicated. her and I have history together that doesn’t make things easy, I uh--- ”

The more Mikado talked about his friend, the more he was reminded that he was standing in front of starving wolves.

"I don’t like putting her through any unnecessary situations. She’s.. important to me.”

Once upon a time, Jeanette was the only thing (person) keeping him afloat, and ‘important’ was not a strong enough word to describe it.

Wanting to avoid lingering on this topic, Mikado abruptly changed direction. “Anyway, regarding the fire.. we might as well start the cursory investigation now. What do we know so far? It was within our territory right?”

An excess of free time lead to laziness and being productive kept Mikado’s mind off of the things he didn’t want to think about.

“Just before we get into it, I’ve got to call Jeanette first.”
