I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). the thing about telegrams was you were charged by the letter, encouraging a culture of minimalist communication.

i am certain hugo and his publisher (or oscar wilde and his, if indeed either ever happened) were far from the only people ever to prearrange a single-character code so they could send affordable telegrams later. this is a very obvious thing to do. it's just normally the people doing this were normal folks, practicing thrift, and did not enter the historical record even as rumors.

these two weren't even poor enough to remotely need to do this; they were famous, especially hugo. wilde notoriously liked the high life. they could have sent normal telegrams.

presumably, most of the motive here for both the vacation and the communication protocol was minimizing hugo or wilde's stress over the book release by giving him just enough information to not need to ruminate over the question of How It Was Going, but not enough for him to obsess over the details.

I ran into this post years ago and to be honest, it has completely reoriented the way I engage with food.

Like. I’ve always sorta understood that things grow moldy or stale or sour or such if left out, but I never really internalized it in a meaningful way.

But now I’m just like.

Yeah. The hungering dust. There exists omnivorous dust in the air that will eat my food if I don’t.

Those bagels have been sitting there for a week. Are we going to eat them soon or are we leaving them for the hungering dust?

Pizza’s been sitting out on the counter for an hour. Everyone’s enjoying the pizza, but if we don’t want “everyone” to include the hungering dust then we should probably put it away soon.
