Going through my notes I realised it's Hiro's birthday. Of course my confusion lay in the fact I had previously made it the 21st. So here's a quick drabble thing my poor boy Hiro.
“Sudden thought you guys” The group look up. “Does anyone actually know when Hiro’s birthday is?”
For a moment silence rings through the air, everyone going over facts they’ve learnt about their friend.
Reo is the first to break the silence. “Don’t know, don’t care”
Melodia sighs, as Reo looks back to his book, it’s was only expected of the older twin.
“You raise a good point” says Kaede, head tilted ever so slightly in her train of thoughts. “He’s never mentioned it, then again he doesn’t ever speak about himself.”
Melodia frowns, her body lurching forward as she crosses her legs. “Well someone’s got to know!” She exclaims. “He can’t be that mysterious.” The four look between one another, wanting to believe Mel’s statement but understanding the reality of the situation. Hiro put up a barrier between them for a reason; he did not want anyone to pry into his business.
“Gem?” He looks up, startled to find all eyes on him. “You have a look on your face as if you know something. You do it when you’re debating speaking up or not.” Kaede comments, suppressing a laugh at the look on his face.
“W-Well…Hiro doesn’t celebrate his birthday” He mumbles, seemingly shy under the sudden attention.
“Oh yeah” Kaede mutters, more to herself than anyone else. “You used to work with Hiro before this.”
Melodia perks up in her seat, “That means you should know when his birthday is right?!”
Gem forces a nervous laugh, his finger raising to scratch his cheek as he squirmed ever so slightly in his own seat.
Reo rolls eyes, “He clearly does not want us to know about his stupid birthday or he would have told us, if he doesn’t want to celebrate it, we shouldn’t’ force it upon him.”
“You’re just saying that because you don’t like him” Mel huffs, a pout threatening to break through her lips.
“Reo’s got a point though” Ren murmurs quietly, eyes lazily dragging over the contents of the book his twin is reading. “If he doesn’t want it, we shouldn’t force him to celebrate.”
The pout succeeds in breaking through, leaving a very prominently displeased Mel in her seat. “What if it’s just because he’s never had a reason to? Birthday’s are supposed to be fun. If we show him we cared enough to find out, maybe he’ll open up and start to be happy on his birthdays.”
“Melo-chan…” Silence fills the room once more. What if there are reasons why he can’t?
“I’m going to find out when his birthday is with your help or not!” Melodia declares, “If we find out now at least we’ll be prepared for it next year.”
No one stops her as she walks out the room.
“Melo-chan, I understand that you want to do something for him but it’s today, most of us have already bought Christmas presents and don’t know what else to buy.” Says Kaede, resting a hand on her friend’s shoulder. Melodia doesn’t spare her a glance as she continues to apply tape to the birthday banners.
“We don’t need to buy presents to show we care” she replies, turning away to stick the banners up. “Even without presents or a cake, we can show we care.”
Kaede sighs, her teeth grazing over the insides of her cheeks.
“Gem says they’re walking down the hallway now” Ren says quietly, placing his phone back in his pocket. Melodia smiles at that, picking up a handful of party poppers and blowers before handing them out.
“Even if you’re not enthusiastic about this, please at least seem it.” She asks, such a look in her eyes causing the group to soften. They nod, getting into position.
Until soon enough, the door opens.
“Happy Birthday, Hiro! (You jerk)”
At the mumbled insult, Ren elbowed his twin. Hiro, on the other hand, frowns once his surprise had passed over.
“How did you know?” He grumbles more than asks, Melodia smiles widely bouncing over to place a party hat on his head.
“I asked around, we’re all friends you know? You should tell us simple things like your birthday!”
Hiro scowls snatching the hat off his head, “I don’t want to celebrate my birthday, nor do I want you to pry into my personal information.”
Kaede, upon noticing the disheartened look on Mel’s face, walks over. “Hiro, we know that you don’t but Melo-chan wants this to be a happy occasion for you. It’s only your birthday, she’s not trying to find out your life story. All she wants you to know is that we care, so even if you’re angry please try and understand her reasoning.”
He huffs, scowl still twisted on his face. “Thanks, but don’t waste your efforts on this next year. It’ll be better if you forget about it like I have been trying to do.” And with that, Hiro retreats to his room leaving his group mates to ponder such a reaction.
If only they could have seen the trace of a smile on his lips upon reading the cards left by his door.
