It was cold enough that Regulus could feel it in their joints--not that that was an uncommon occurrence anymore. Joints. And arms. And legs. They all ached and not just weather change. Sometimes he got up and toppled over--embarrassing. 

If it hadn’t been for some legal documentation that needed to be signed, Regulus would have settled into the study with a fire and some warming charms and not moved all day. But paperwork had to be dealt with in person. Regulus Black had to be seen--generally, anyway, because the Black family was fine--in person. 

At least there were lovely little cafes where hot tea could be purchased along with a dragon-fruit flavored scone. It was better with cream.

Regulus Black preferred not to interact with anyone, thank everyone very much, so they could only really blame the continuous bone-deep ache and exhaustion for the way they turned as the door opened and blurted:

“You’re an idiot, you know?”

Of course, it was true ...but now that person might think Regulus Black was inviting conversation.

Parties, particularly Lucius Malfoy’s parties were tedious even before everything started going tits up unbearable. Regulus took solace in the fact they were fairly certain there were no Legilimens at the party--and if they were, they’d certainly not bother to pay much attention to the apparent boy in a crow's mask. 

Regulus had done everything in their power to appear their age, at a minimum, and older if possible but it... well. Regulus’ face was soft and if they were being honest it seemed like every edge they had cultivated prior to a few months ago had begun to round. 

They’d worry about that later, though, when they weren’t struggling not to yawn in public. This was just Lucius Party malaise, nothing else. It was fine.

They were fine.

Not too far away, there was a commotion but Regulus didn’t pay any attention to it until boom

There went the mask, skittering out and along the floor. Balls, Regulus thought, trying to figure out how they were going to pick it up without looking too heinously awkward. I should have gone as an old man.

And then there wasn’t time to worry about that because Regulus was following the mask across the floor--sliding at first, and then hitting the ground and rolling like a harvest gourd trapped in a gale. 

“Oof.” Regulus stopped when they hit someone's knees and sent them toppling, too. At least they had better footing.

BASICS.

DETAILS.

There’s a universe where Regulus Black is a semi pleasant young person who spends all their time on any idle research that catches their attention. This is a time and place where Regulus Black did not become a Death Eaters.

Unfortunately, in this universe Regulus Black watched their brother make a mess of things and ended up in the fire themselves. Regulus, of course, was delighted to take over the mantle—what better way to deal with feelings of abandonment than to cook the bile into a furious just you wait, I can do better.

And if you ask Regulus—they’ve done… okay. Finances were a difficult learning curve, along with larger social role, and their family has always been difficult at the best of times. Luckily for Regulus, they had the Death Eaters. Strange as it would seem to those on the outside, the Death Eaters became a much-needed support system for a teenager who was never very good at building social acumen. Within that group, there is always someone with experience—and it didn’t hurt that Regulus shared many of their beliefs/bigotries.

This was true right up until the horcrux. 

Regulus Black knows too much. If Regulus hadn’t landed in an ill-conceived skirmish with the Order and ended up with magical musculoskeletal damage Regulus might have even done something about the horcrux. Perhaps, had there been any at all positive indications on the Order’s continued survival, Regulus might have even shared their knowledge with…well, not Sirius, surely. But someone.

Instead, Regulus maintains appearances of a seeming semi graceful slide to reclusive eccentricity with the help of the Malfoys for social cover, some pilfered documents from Andromeda Tonk’s place, and Severus Snape’s experiments. 

Regulus Black experiences muscle weakness, muscle spasms, and extreme fatigue which has been progressing for approximately four months. When attending mandatory social functions, they take a potion made of Werewolf Blood and/or Saliva taken during the full moon. Currently, they are resisting taking up a cane because they are 18 not 90.

REGULUS IS A SECONDARY CHARACTER.
