I believe the instructions for this prototype is intended for novels and other narrative-based texts? I thought I’d experiment using a law textbook. The result was jarring: the process of censoring and appropriation alters the meaning and context of the book, yet this book originally described the strict rules of government, law and the rights of an individual. It’s funny how a document so precise and vital to a functional society can be easily defaced to ridicule with a few changed words.

I thinkkkk these were my instructions you attempted. Looks different to my prototype but actually way more interesting. I didn’t think to cut out words and replace them with written words - like it

Something I always forget to do for assignments is check the rubric. Although I’m happy with my final project I’m worried that I have failed to fully embrace the prototyping process. Because mine was mostly conceptual with a traditional book format, I thought it didn’t apply to me. This could have hindered my learning process in some way and prevented me from discovering some insights prototyping provides. I did explore it for the first task however and this helped shape the idea behind my final project.

To end on an idea instead of begin with one was unfamiliar territory to me. It was interesting to become aware of the way we’ve been raised to complete projects (research, development, refinement) and question if this is really the best way to be creative. I had some difficulty breaking out of this habit and may have reverted back to it for my final project. The evolution of my ideas usually happen inside my head - in the future I will embrace sprintotyping more - turning my thoughts into quick physical manifestations did give me a clearer idea of where to head next.

for the actual booko - the look was nice but next creation attempt will need a hard cover. Creating just one signature with thick thread left a bit of a divide in the middle. Also needed to consider the colour more - using pantone’s instead of random cmyk’s.

Overall I consider my experience positive and eye-opening. A very cool and challenging brief that forced us to think in non conventional ways when designing a book

Post-digital children’s book (for adults).

book: In the initial weeks I was always fascinated by the contrast between the way people converse now vs. how they conversed in previous centuries, the evolution of language in general and how the post digital age is heavily influencing the way we talk and think. Having used social media and online chatting since around age 12 (11 years), I’m well versed and experienced with this online phenomenon. My final project see’s a textual classic - The Tale of Peter Rabbit written by Beatrix Potter in 1902 - translated to read in a manner more appropriate to the way people converse online, and in the post digital era (2017). This includes the use of the forever evolving online jargon and abbreviations, often popularised by teenage girls and boys - which according to my research, are the innovators of language in the information age. I presented the dialog of the story in a manner that also appears familiar to the post digital world - the blue and grey conversation bubbles we see in Facebook chat, smart phone messaging and other chat applications. Trends I noticed in the contrast between 20th century speak and now, include a total lack of formality, complete disregard for grammar and the inclusion of small expressive images aka emojis. The only traditional thing about this book, is the paper and its book-like form. It is a conceptual, satirical and humorous approach to this task. Throughout the weeks of this class the project examples that resonated with me were the ones with satirical concepts and traditional formats i.e. Cory Arcangel’s ‘Working on My Novel’.

I played with the idea of creating a html book (inspired by webyarns) revolving around the text of a meditation transcript (and perhaps a recording/audiobook playing over the top). The feeling of peace, comfort and focus the meditation creates is like that of when we are in the zone doing work or browsing the web. As you go through the meditation and start to become quite relaxed, you are greeted with an error message and glitching out of the audio. Any attempts at pressing the retry button are futile (unless you click it 10+ times) and clicking cancel brings you back to the beginning. The challenge is to complete the meditation but still maintain inner peace and focus.

On reflection, I felt that I was straying too far from being ‘bookish’ and was just creating this to frustrate people for fun (not for my concept). With 1ish week left, I really need to pull everything together and consolidate my observations and experiments. I am thinking of exploring the expected peaceful ‘error-free’ experience of reading a codex being disrupted by error and glitch found in google scans, e-books etc.

Ryoji Ikeda is someone I have missed out on seeing twice. His digital work is stunning and he came up in Karens slides the other day in studio and so I had to go back and find some of my favourite works. 

superposition is a project about the way we understand the reality of nature on an atomic scale and is inspired by the mathematical notions of quantum mechanics. Performers will appear in Ikeda’s work for the first time, performing as operator/conductor/observer/examiners. All the components on stage will be in a state of superposition; sound, visuals, physical phenomena, mathematical concepts, human behaviour and randomness – these will be constantly orchestrated and de-orchestrated simultaneously in a single performance piece.

DATAMATICS

Using pure data as a source for sound and visuals, datamatics combines abstract and mimetic presentations of matter, time and space. datamatics is the second audiovisual concert in the datamatics series. Projecting dynamic computer-generated imagery in pared down black and white with striking colour accents, the intense yet minimal graphic renderings of data progress through multiple dimensions. From 2D sequences of patterns derived from hard drive errors and studies of software code, the imagery transforms into dramatic rotating views of the universe in 3D, whilst in the final scenes four-dimensional mathematical processing opens up spectacular and seemingly infinite vistas. A powerful and hypnotic soundtrack reflects the imagery through a meticulous layering of sonic components to produce immense and apparently boundless acoustic spaces.datamatics [ver 2.0] is the full–length version of this audiovisual concert. With a commissioned second part added, datamatics [ver.2.0] is significantly developed from the earlier version of this piece which premiered in March 2006. Driven by the primary principles of datamatics, but objectively deconstructing its original elements – sound, visuals and even source codes – this work creates a kind of meta–datamatics. Real–time program computations and data scanning are employed to create an extended new sequence that is a further abstraction of the original work. The technical dynamics of the piece, such as its extremely fast frame rates and variable bit depths, continue to challenge and explore the thresholds of our perceptions.

Post-digtial translation of The Tale of Peter Rabbit - 2017

I have decided to extract just the dialog from the novel The Tale of Peter Rabbit which i found on the Gutenberg project. because it is so innocently and beautifully written, it will be interesting to see the contrast between its original and post-digital translation. Because i have years of experience with TXT speak and internet slang, i am confident in rewording this story into a post digital adaptation.

Finalising Pt 1

Originally in week three i had the idea to edit a text and make it ‘read and sound more appropriate to the way people converse in the post digital age’. because inspiration seems to have stopped for me in week 10, ive decided to re-visit this concept and expand on it further. i am considering the type of language, words and symbols people use online vs. pre-digital age - ‘words’ intrinsic to post digital.

Some research and personal experience with this made me think of the following categories:

Internet slang / abbreviation: omg = oh my god ttyl = talk to you later ffs = for f*cks sake

emojis: using cute & small character faces as forms of human expression and emotion :D :p

general crude talk:  everyone loves to get defensive and fight online

terrible grammar: tereble grama

I want to take a classic piece of writing / text (possibly from the guttenberg project) and re-script it’s original wording to include a combination of the post-digital language archetypes above. this will effect the whole vibe of the story.

i would present this in the form of a traditional book - with a non traditional concept
